My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as always…
- ‘Shotgun’ by George Ezra has rebounded to #1 on the singles chart, where it spends a third non-consecutive week at the top. It is only the fourth song in the past two years to make a return to #1, after: ‘Shape Of You’, ‘Despacito’ & ‘Three Lions’.
- ‘One Kiss’ by Calvin Harris & Dua Lipa holds at #1 on the airplay chart once again. It is now the fifth most played song on British radio in 2018, behind: ‘These Days’, ‘For You’, ‘Feel It Still’ & ‘Never Be The Same’ respectively.
- The official video to ‘In My Feelings’ debuts at #1 on the national YouTube chart with 3.05 million plays (the latest chart I could get info for was the 3-9 August one).
- NICKI MINAJ – BARBIE DREAMS (#36)
I’m really not sure what to think of this one currently. Nicki pays homage to ‘Dreams’ by the late Notorious B.I.G., but while the original involved Biggie rapping about his attraction to popular female R&B artists, Nicki decides to roast prominent male artists and athletes, but it’s all in good fun as most of them are her collaborators or friends. The guitar plucking in the production fir better than expected & her delivery is fine considering she freestyled most of this in one take. So far, not bad, I’d say a 6/10.
- DAVID GUETTA FT ANNE-MARIE – DON’T LEAVE ME ALONE (#37)
This might not be Song Of The Summer material, but it’s a really solid collaboration regardless! Anne-Marie shines the most on this song, where she sings passionately about wanting a lover to stay with her through the good or bad times, even if I think she’s wailing a little bit too much in the hook. The snappy percussion & simmering synths in the verses stand out a fair bit, even if the drop lets it out slightly by being too punctuated by piano stabs & hand claps, it’s not really all that danceable. That said, it’s enthusiastic enough for me to like this a fair bit, so I’m going with a strong 7/10.
- LILY JAMES, JESSICA KEENAN WYNN, ALEXA DAVIES & CELIA IMRIE (#40)
Considering this is an ABBA cover, I knew it was going to end up liking it! The thing is, the delivery is so light-hearted, even though the content about a female student who has a crush on her teacher eventually can’t restrain herself & kisses him, could be viewed as a fairly raunchy for a ‘Mamma Mia’ makeover. However, the harmonies are awesome & the production is so bouncy that this is a lot of fun regardless & it’s becoming catchier with every listen. For me, again, strong 7/10.
- On the albums chart, ‘Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again’ is #1 for a fourth consecutive week. It ties ‘Les Misérables’ for the second longest reigning run atop the albums chart by a Motion Picture Cast Recording in recent chart history. It’s got a while to go before it catches the current record holder, ‘The Greatest Showman’, on 21 weeks!
- The rest of the Top 5 this week is: ‘The Greatest Showman’ soundtrack (stationary at #2), ‘Scorpion’ by Drake (4-3), ‘Staying At Tamara’s’ (5-4) & ‘Queen’ by Nicki Minaj (debuts at #5).
- Looking ahead to next week, as well as some Aretha Franklin classics returning, these songs could enter the Top 40 for the first time: ‘Promises’ by Calvin Harris & Sam Smith, ‘Breathin’ by Ariana Grande,
‘TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME’ by The 1975, ‘Lost Without You’ by Freya Ridings, ‘In My Mind’ by Dynoro & Gigi D’Agostino, ‘All I Am’ by Jess Glynne, ‘Faith’s Song’ by Amy Wadge & maybe even more.
- Thanks for reading everyone! I hope you all have a good weekend. :)

You’ve said only the fourth song to return to number 1 in 2 years.. when you go back in time this never happened but now with streaming accounting for so much of the chart it’s become more common..
Piran
It seemed to happen most back when streaming was introduced to the charts. Back then, the chart in general was less stagnant, which is why between 2010 & 2016, there were hardly any songs that made it past even a month at #1.

Red
Didn't Clean Bandit also had a rebound #1 at some point ?
Piran
Not according to the OCC archives for them. All four of their #1s have been consecutive weeks at the top, or only one week.

Finally the new Charts is now up. I am so glad that shotgun by George Ezra is back at number 1. I love that song. Also will there be a Now 101 coming out in November or is Now 100 the last of them.
Ryan Musiker
There will be a Now 101, don't worry.
