This is the chart that marked my 14th birthday - and while there are absolutely awesome tunes courtesy of Calvin Harris and Cardi B to name a few, there’s a of a lot more bangers to go through later...

UK TOP 40 NOTES & OPINION!
I'm new to this! Click and support me!
I'm a young nerd who's obsessed with the charts....

Drake scores his third number one (4th including features) with Nice for What. I like it more than God's Plan but still don't want to see it spend more than a few weeks at the top. It came from #8 on Monday for a late win!

Freaky Friday drops to #2 this week- and to be honest now that the shock of a novelty song topping the charts has worn off I'm getting bored of it. Calvin Harris & Dua Lipa go in at #3 with One Kiss- it was #2 on Monday and I thought it would go to #1, Ruti always likely to fall down. I like it, but think both artists have done better in the past. Rudimental takes #4 with These Days and George Ezra goes in at #5 with Paradise which, to my surprise isn't going to reach #1.

No huge climbers this week but Khalid goes up 5 (#23-#18) with Love Lies and The Weeknd re-enters at #32 with Pray for Me- he actually left the top 100 so I reckon a chart error occurred there... (tell me if you know)

New Entries:
#1 Drake- Nice for What (see above)
#14 Ruti- Dreams (#1 on Monday- don't expect to see it next week)
#24 Banx & Ranx- Answerphone (Heard it first on the BBC Chart Show- like it!)
#27 Cardi B- Be Careful ((Taken from the album Invasion of Privacy) haven't heard it and I don't think I want to!)
#37 Nines- I See You Shining (So generic... can grime rappers rap about anything except how frickin' rich they are)
#38 Kylie- Dancing (Her 51st top 40 hit and taking from her #1 album Golden)
#39 David Guetta- Mad Love (Good!- expect it to climb!)
#40 Cardi B- I Like it (Alright for a cliché female rapper)

The longest running song is Ed Sheeran- Perfect (40 Wks.) (Can it beat record-breaking Thinking out Loud's 56 Weeks)

I'm doing this for genre and international charts! (Some may not be ready yet)
Thanks for your support!

"Make Your Own Kind of Music" is a breathtakingly beautiful charity single, it deserves to be in the top 10!

It's also an advert for Skoda...

How... random. A car brand doesn't exactly come to mind when hearing that song. But apparently the attitude of the song is shared between Paloma and Skoda, so... there's that.

Ruti isn't number 1. I think you've mixed this chart up with the official update

If you re-read the post you will see it says No. 1 in the sales chart

Correct, Ruti is #1 in Sales with Dreams, Sales and Physical Singles are the best really as that are the real deal stuff, we know the audio streams is so so popular but singles is added by 150-1 to 300-1 ratio points streaming to it into copies.

Dan Love

OK I misred it

They are not the best, downloads and physical sales are the worst as they do not represent anything apart from a tiny part of music consumption

Audio Streams is fake to be added to radio really as it uses silly points steaming point sales, of what people play than what people want to pay, in divide mode, Physical are the best due to in fact as proper singles, what people pay as not album tracks or promo tracks are including, but sales charts not singles sales are the 2nd best and what people pay for like downloads, but in all these audio streams are the most popular format because it is, and each charts is open for anyone with different taste and needs, so that why it should be separate, i am saying within 5 years the radio will count complete audio streams will be 100% each week and will take off sales for singles charts as it over 75-82% already,

Drake back at #1 after 2 weeks- get used to it everyone, it's obvious anything he releases is going to go to the top! Not that I'm complaining though, I think Drake has improved massively in recent years, and Nice For What is another banger. One Kiss is another samey house track from Calvin, would've been nice to see Dua get another #1 but he should go back to his EDM days IMO. Nice to see Cardi B get many new entries with the release of Invasion Of Privacy, and I love seeing Answerphone entering the Top 40, great tune that. Sadly Meant To Be is still missing out on a Top 10 peak, was very close this week but not sure it will pull through to the Top 10 by next week!

Drake is #1 again. Shocker.
Also, I just don't like "One Kiss". What happened to Calvin Harris? His "18 Months" and "Motion" eras were full of fist-pumping and motivational EDM bangers and they were really awesome, but now he just does boring house music like this.
I feel like he's lost his shine. It's pretty disappointing.

It really is. He's my favorite DJ of all time, and coming off his best album he's ever released last year, this is disappointing, and he had the nerve to put Dua Lipa on it which I already don't like.

Idk if this song will grow on me, but so far I've only played it once and not playing again anytime soon.

My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as always

- ‘Nice For What’ becomes Drake’s fourth #1 on the singles chart, which crept up to the chart summit late in the tracking week due to its dominance on streaming.

- Only 2.096 copies separated the Top 3 this week & I predict ‘One Kiss’ to rise to the top spot next week.

- ‘These Days’ by Rudimental, Jess Glynne, Macklemore & Dan Caplen rises 2-1 on the airplay charts to reclaim the top spot. ‘For You’ by Liam Payne & Rita Ora is the most played song on the radio of 2018 so far.

- Going back to ‘Nice For What’, I’ve recently said about Drake that I don’t mind a lot of his latest music, but he’s so overexposed that I find it hard to care about him as much as I used to. Unfortunately, despite the good video, ‘Nice For What’ is not a step in the right direction musically! Lyrically, it’s either Drake flirting or bragging, which are two things you’ve heard him do dozens of times before! At least his delivery is fine, where he seems more endearing & energetic than usual also with a lightness to his step & he does come with a bit more power here. However, that ‘Ex-Factor’ sample really doesn’t fit this track well & the production from Murda Beatz gets all the more disappointing with those crisp drums. I can’t say I’m a fan of this & it’s not a good sign if hearing this is making me miss ‘God’s Plan’!

- Up next, ‘One Kiss’ by Calvin Harris & Dua Lipa starts at #3 today. Sometimes you just have a good feeling when you hear two big names coming together who have both been responsible for big party anthems & ‘One Kiss’ is the type of song that is definitely going to get everyone in the festival mood! It’s a dreamy whirlpool of deep house, but one that Dua Lipa can sail through so well as her untouchable vocals cut through Calvin Harris’ moody keys & house beats as she delivers the club-ready lines! I knew this would get off a massive start & looking at the current sales numbers, like I said, this is a big contender to be the next #1 & I’m completely fine with that!

- After winning the seventh series of the voice, Ruti Olajugbagbe (who was mentored by Tom Jones) enters the chart at #14 with her cover of ‘Dreams’ by The Cranberries. The initial response for this was absolutely massive but quickly died down during the week; it was leading the mid-week update & it’s easily the best-selling song of the week, but negligible streaming & airplay means it places it outside the Top 10 & it probably won’t stick around for long. Now I had a bad feeling about this when it started playing, as it seems to bore me with a sustained piano line & Ruti’s upper register being nowhere near on the level of the original & that can be a problem when this version lasts just under two minutes! However, get past that forgettable introduction & there’s at least a bit of momentum when the beat kicks in, then we get an explosive chorus with some really powerful vocals, but the issue is that given the length of the song, it takes too long to get going & we could’ve got a bridge or final hook. I get that Ruti’s still young & she’s clearly got the pipes, but I’m going to be sticking to the original if I choose to hear the song.

- Banx & Ranx make their debut Top 40 appearance as ‘Answerphone’ soars 49-25 after a month on the chart, with a little help from Ella Eyre & Yxng Bane. Although, to be honest, this feels more like Ella Eyre should be the lead artist more than anything! Banx & Ranx are adding some summery electro-Caribbean production which I really like, but what caught me off guard was the content, where Ella Eyre contacts a guy who never picks up or responds to her calls & she questions whether or not he still loves her. The lyrics are fairly sad in comparison to the production here! I also think how Ella Eyre’s hook flows into Yxng Bane’s verse is good & vice versa, as well as their harmonies at the end of the song, although Ella Eyre kind of drowned out Yxng Bane’s vocals a bit more than I would’ve liked as both are decent singers. As a whole, I’ve been coming back to this more frequently each week & that hook is so catchy that it would be cool to see this keep gaining traction!

- Cardi B makes her fifth Top 40 appearance as ‘Be Careful’ rockets 72-27 after last week’s debut. I think it’s fair to say that Cardi B has grown on me considerably since I first heard about her. I might not have liked ‘Bodak Yellow’, but all of her featured appearances (especially ‘Finesse’) have been fine enough & has shown improvement with her own material & here’s the thing, I get why she is leading the way in female rap right now, as she always brings attitude to her music. With ‘Be Careful’, it sees her take a more serious tone where she cusses out a unnamed guy (probably Offset) for cheating on her & she discusses the insecurities of being cheated on. The production is what lets this down a little for me, with a tepid sample & a flat synth melody, but for a song warning someone to “be careful”, there’s no danger or dark presence to her vocals at all. I do like her more melodic flow in the hook, so she can tackle more dimensions with her delivery, but there are better tracks from that new album of hers that could become hits. I’m not really going to remember this for very long unfortunately, but it gets a pass from me for now at least.

- Rapper Nines makes his debut chart appearance as ‘I See You Shining’ debuts at #37! I’ll keep this one brief because it’s not much different to the usual new grime artist you get coming & going inside the Top 40, sounding completely generic despite the flow being fine. The chilled production from Steel Banglez & Zeph Ellis is pleasant but barely stands out & Nines’ rapping about his success uses more surreal lyrics than usual, but that’s all too this song really. It’s not bad, but that's only because there’s not enough here to make this a poor track, just a boring one.

- Thanks to the release of her latest album & all of the promotion for it, ‘Dancing’ by Kylie Minogue re-enters the Official Chart at #38, becoming her 51st Top 40 appearance! I think it’s really cool that Kylie is still having hits chart this high being in the music industry for just over 30 years now, even with the streaming disadvantage she has. That being said, while I’m a massive fan of her biggest hits & even the music she put out earlier this decade, I wish I liked ‘Dancing’ more than I actually do. I will say that I like the fusion of genres here, with the acoustic guitar fingerpicking as well as the innovations of electronic dance music today & while it’s immediately accessible, there is some depth within the lyrics. However, Kylie’s vocal style here with her brandishing some twang into her voice does not suit her at all & the hook kills any momentum with that mediocre vocal sampling being blended with the EDM elements. Overall, yeah, it’s nice to see Kylie back, but I just wish it was with a stronger lead single. Still not bad though, so check it out if you’re curious!

- After becoming a minor hit across Europe a few weeks ago, ‘Mad Love’ by Sean Paul & David Guetta ft Becky G is starting to gain traction in the UK, as it lifts 44-39 on its eighth week in the chart. If there’s a song that I think has potential to be a slow gainer to eventually become a big summer radio smash, it’s this! The main reason for that is because the song is just full of energy, although it’s definitely more $exiness than love in this! David Guetta certainly makes everything come together well, especially with the bounce of the EDM beat that he provides here. Vocally, Becky G sounds amazing with both her English & some Spanish vocals & Sean Paul immediately jumps into his quick Jamaican flow that I’ve always been a fan of! Like I said, I wouldn’t be surprised if this becomes a much bigger hit over time & I hope that happens, because I really like this!

- Finally, Cardi B has another album track inside the Top 40, as ‘I Like It’, which features Latino acts J Balvin & Bad Bunny. This is heavily indebted to the world of Latin hip-hop, which is a fusion you very rarely see on the Official Charts, with Cardi B delivering a fun hook & I actually don’t mind the flows of both rappers here. In other words, my opinion on this track is the same as the title & I think it could definitely work as an official single!

- On the albums chart, ‘Golden’ becomes Kylie Minogue’s sixth #1 & her 14th studio album overall. It sold 48,000 copies across all metrics this week, with a 13,000 copies lead over its nearest contender. It is also the fastest selling album on vinyl so far in 2018!

- The rest of the Top 5 is: ‘The Greatest Showman’ soundtrack (1-2), ‘Staying At Tamara’s’ by George Ezra (2-3), ‘America’ by 30 Seconds To Mars (debuts at #4) & ‘St Jude Re:Wired’ by The Courteeners (debuts at #5). â€˜Ă·â€™ by Ed Sheeran reaches its lowest charting position so far, as it drops 5-7 this week.

- Looking ahead to next week, these songs could enter the Top 40 for the first time: ‘Chun-Li’ & ‘Barbie Tingz’ by Nicki Minaj, ‘Let Me’ by ZAYN, ‘Sky Full Of Song’ by Florence + The Machine & maybe even more.

- Thanks for reading everyone! I hope you all have a good weekend. :)

Hey Prian! In my opinion Nice For What is even better than God's Plan, the one complaint I had with the latter was that Drake sounded very monotone at times and could've made his delivery more interesting. Nice For What is definitely a lot more energetic and I can even see it dominating the chart until Ariana Grande's new single is released at the end of April!

One Kiss sounds incredibly samey to me, I love Dua's vocals as always, however the beat and production is poor by Calvin Harris' standards. I miss his EDM days, every track on 18 Months was great but he's declined over the past few years. It's listenable though and I can see this staying in the Top 40 for quite a while, they may be able to sneak 1 week in at #1 if Drake's sales aren't strong enough but he's showing the same Spotify dominance that he did with God's Plan.

This week was great for new entries, there was 9 in total mainly thanks to Cardi B's Invasion Of Privacy being released! It's great seeing her have more success, I'm not sure I like the rest of her music as much as Finesse, even if it was Bruno's song, however Be Careful is a favourite for me right now. It was also great seeing Answerphone climb so many places, I can see it going Top 10 soon.

I See You Shining is probably one of my least favourite songs of 2018 so far, I'm not as critical of Grime than others are but this is terrible! Some truly ridiculous lyrics in there, including one about his daughter owning a Rolex watch at the age of 3. Hope this doesn't climb!

Dancing really isn't that strong of a lead single at all, it's nice seeing it reach the Top 40 after a week of massive promotion alongside Golden going to #1 on the albums chart, but the song has been out for weeks and I much prefer Stop Me From Falling now. Same goes for Mad Love, not interesting enough musically to hold my interest and has been out for a while by this point. I've never liked Sean Paul that much either which doesn't help!

Can't believe Meant To Be has missed out on the Top 10 again! I'm afraid that #11 will be it's peak, unless it can pull through with some good streams by next Friday I can see this going on ACR soon sadly.

I'm glad to see 'Nice For What' reach #1. I like both 'Nice For What' and 'God's Plan', and on first listen of 'Nice For What' I'd say that the two songs were roughly equal, but it's kept on growing on me and I really like it now! I'd still say that 'Passionfruit' is my favourite Drake song, but 'Nice For What' could very well overtake 'One Dance' to become my second favourite! I also like seeing 'One Kiss' debut at #3, though I thought it would debut at #2. I like the song enough, and Dua Lipa and Calvin Harris are both artists that I'm a fan of, but I definitely prefer 'Nice For What'.

Next week I think it'll be a pretty close battle between 'Nice For What' and 'One Kiss', and I can see 'One Kiss' leading in the midweek update, but 'Nice For What' taking the top spot by the end of the week. 'One Kiss' is definitely dominant on sales, though 'Nice For What' is doing very well in that regard for a Drake single. While 'One Kiss' is doing very well on streams as well and is closing the gap, 'Nice For What' still has a very large lead over there, and because of that I can see 'Nice For What' getting 4 - 5 weeks at #1. If it manages 5 Drake will match Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber for most weeks at #1 this decade.

I like that 'Answerphone' and 'Mad Love' entered this week, but I wasn't really a fan of any of the other entries. 'Bartier Cardi' remains the only song that I've heard from Cardi B that I like, sadly. I was hoping that something from 'Invasion of Privacy' would change that, and while I haven't heard the full album yet, I don't like any of the 4 or 5 songs I've heard so far.

While 'Ă·' may have hit its lowest ever position on the chart, it's not all bad news. This week 'Ă·' became the most streamed album on Spotify with a ridiculous 5.52 billion streams as of 11th April 2018! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_streamed_songs_on_Spotify#Most_streamed_albums, but the Top 5 most streamed albums on Spotify are:

1) Ed Sheeran - 'Ă·' - 5.52bn streams
2) Justin Bieber - 'Purpose' - 5.50bn streams
3) Ed Sheeran - 'x' - 5.14bn streams
4) Drake - 'Views' - 4.85bn streams
5) Sam Smith - 'In The Lonely Hour' - 3.43bn streams

I was quite amazed with the amount of British and Canadian artists so high on the list. While there are only 3 albums from British artists on the list, all 3 are in the Top 5, and 2 of them are 2 of only 3 albums to pass 5 billion streams (though both are from Ed Sheeran). The other 2 albums in the Top 5 are from Canadian artists, and #6 and #7 are both from a Canadian artist as well, as both are from The Weeknd. The highest position for a US artist on the list is Post Malone's 'Stoney' at #8.

Yeah, if I'll give 'Nice For What' one thing, it's at least more upbeat than 'God's Plan', but it just won't get as high of a replay factor as 'God's Plan' did for me unfortunately.
I definitely prefer Calvin Harris' '18 Months' & 'Motion' eras, however, 'One Kiss' has a tropical vibe to it that I really like & I think it suits Dua Lipa's voice really well. This should probably go to #1 next week by the way, as it's currently passed 'Nice For What' on streaming (both have over 700,000 streams on Spotify today alone), with just over 2.5 times the number of sales currently!
'Answerphone' might end up Top 10 soon. although it's sales & streaming momentum is slowing down a little, but it'll probably end up in the 16-20 range in the next chart which is a good sign.
Haha, those nine new arrivals meant that I was typing a lot more in my reviews than I was expecting, so I had to keep some song reviews shorter than usual.
That's a shame about 'Meant To Be', but at least we finally had a country song reach the Top 15 in the UK again after so long!

Hey Gameskiller! :)
'Passionfruit' is definitely my favourite Drake song that he's released in the past three or four years, but 'Nice For What' just did very little for me, although it's at least a little more upbeat than 'God's Plan'.
That's awesome for 'Ă·', but is that figure global or just for the UK? If so, how do the two lists differ?
One of us will need to check this, but I wouldn't be surprised if Canadians have passed Americans for weeks at #1 on the Official Chart this decade. If not, I think they could do within the next year or two.
Speaking of The Weeknd, do you see him getting a #1 with the lead single from his next album, because he came really close with 'Starboy'.
Finally, Ted said that Ariana Grande's next single could be out very soon! Apparently it's called 'No Tears Left To Cry' & it'll be the first new music we've had from Ariana since that dreadful Manchester bombing which happened nearly a year ago. I think whenever that's released, it'll very likely become her third #1 single!

Nice For What declining in streams is mostly thanks to it bizarrely being moved 20 spaces down on the Hot Hits UK Spotify playlist. This playlist has a massive impact on the chart as it's the one most users listen to, and changes can happen at any point in time. For example, My Way by One Bit and Noah Cyrus first charted weeks ago, but it re-entered the Top 100 recently after it was moved up a number of spaces on Hot Hits UK. Nice For What is still featured in many other playlists and should still be doing well, but this is the main reason for it's decline.

avatar

Piran

Maybe people have finally released that we need a break from Drake, haha!
Yeah, the big streaming gainers are definitely the ones to watch! Do you know what's currently topping the Hot Hits chart at the moment?

T

Ted

1

Well, the 'Hot Hits UK' playlist on Spotify isn't a chart, it's Spotify's main playlists for popular music at the moment- the first 3 songs on it right now are Freaky Friday, Lullaby, and Answerphone. This is why I'm expecting Answerphone to eventually go Top 10, as it's high up on the playlist, as HHUK is probably one of the most widely used Spotify playlists in the UK, I know all my friends use it.

Record companies usually pay Spotify to keep new songs high up on the playlist, which is why Nice For What's fall seems odd to me- it was the 4th song on the playlist upon release, and God's Plan was still really high up at that point. God's Plan is now no longer in it, and Nice For What has fallen about 20 spaces, and is now lower than declining songs like Strangers and These Days.

Hot Hits UK doesn't fully account for a song's success, but it definitely helps, and this is most likely why Nice For What has been declining.

The figure is for global streams. It really would be pretty insane if 'Ă·' had 5.52 billion streams in the UK alone! If the figures were for the UK alone, every person in the UK would've streamed 'Ă·' around 85 times on Spotify on average! I'm not sure how the two lists differ, but I'm 99% sure I remember reading that 'Ă·' was the most streamed album in the UK on OCC at some point. I would expect the rest of the Top 5 to be exactly the same, but 'x' may have been streamed more times in the UK than 'Purpose'. I think there would also be more UK acts in the Top 20, though, rather than just the 2 from Ed and the 1 from Sam Smith in the Top 5.
Between Drake and Bieber alone, Canadians have spent 56 weeks at #1 this decade (Bieber with 30 and Drake with 26), so I would not be surprised in the slightest if they've spent more weeks at #1 than US acts. Just going from acts that have spent 10 or more weeks at #1 this decade, the UK leads with 79 weeks (led by Ed with 30), then it's Canadians with 56 (with only Drake and Bieber contributing), then it's 28 for the US (15 for Pharrell and 13 for Bruno).
I can definitely see The Weeknd getting a #1 with his next lead single. He's very similar to Drake in that, while he doesn't do fantastic on sales, he does very well on streams. Without competition from the likes of Drake, I think that a proper single from him could reach #1.
I can definitely see Ariana's single going to #1 as well. I was quite disappointed when 'One Last Time' didn't reach #1, but hopefully this one can!
Before that, though, I think that 'One Kiss' will definitely be #1 on Friday. It's been continuing to dominate on sales, and it overtook 'Nice For What' on Spotify early in the week and has maintained a narrow lead ever since. Both are doing more than well enough to be a #1 single under normal circumstances (over 700,000 streams on Spotify most days), but they pose very tough competition to each other. Even 'Freaky Friday' is doing well enough to go to #1 under normal circumstances (around 600,000 streams most days), so I think we're going to have some of the highest sales we've seen at the top for a long time. Even last week had pretty high sales, with 51k from 'Nice For What', 50k from 'Freaky Friday' and 49k for 'One Kiss'. This Friday I think that all 3 should be over 50k!

Everyone Knew That Drake Would Be Number one he gained 9 million streams in 2 days
Also though I Wouldn't Of minded any of the top three being number one. Just hope that freaky Friday or one kiss can be number one and that answerphone will be in the the top ten in the future
