i don't know about 'freaky friday' being the first comedy record to reach the top since Peter Kay. there's been some absolute jokes reaching number 1 for quite a while now : 0

Sadly, "The Greatest Showman" couldn't pull off an Official Chart double. "This Is Me" started off strong this week in sales, but unfortunately it just wasn't enough and finished at #3, the same peak it reached before. The song reached a new peak in Scotland at #2, but it was unable to dethrone "Paradise" from the top spot.

This Is Me is one of the worst songs I've ever heard

It's not that bad, but it's starting to really bore me by this point. I saw the film back in December and loved it, but I just wish it could go away now

Well Scott i'm pleased to inform you that "The Greatest Showman" did pull off a double as "This is me" is No.1 in the sales chart, which is the one that really counts

The chart that counts less and less each week as more and more people move to streaming you mean

T

Ted

But it isn't though. Only older generations who don't understand streaming, and people who dislike the current chart rules actually download songs now. Streaming better shows what young people are listening to, which is most usually the target audience for songs these days, and the decision to include it in the charts is a good one. It's the main way most people listen to music now, usually new songs only get 10,000 downloads weekly or less, and such little sales don't justify making a chart for- which is why streaming is included. Get with the times

Paid-for sales counting for about 7-8% of the chart and falling quickly

Well if you take time out to look at the sales chart it's a lot more interesting than the Top 100. At least there's a bit of movement in the charts. Free streaming! How easy is it to manipulate the chart. Just repeat the same song all day. And how do you expect artists to make any money

T

Ted

Erm, there's rules to stop people streaming a song all day? Actually look up this stuff mate, OCC has a rule to stop that. I think if someone has streamed a song more than 10 times in a day, only 10 of those will count.

My thoughts & observations on the UK charts always…

- ‘Freaky Friday’ by Lil Dicky ft Chris Brown rises 5-1 on the singles chart, becoming the first #1 for the former artist & the second for the latter artist! It’s mostly driven by streaming, where it accumulated 4.3 million plays in the past seven days.

- Lil Dicky becomes the first comedian to top the Official Chart since Peter Kay & his animated All Star Band did so back in 2009 for Children In Need.

- Despite 'This Is Me' leading the mid-week update, it lifts 8-3 to the singles this week, however that means it returns to its peak on the main chart & becomes the best-selling song of the week thanks to The Real Full Monty last week. 'God's Plan' by Drake is the most streamed song for an 11th consecutive week.

- ‘Lullaby’ by Sigala & Paloma Faith becomes the new #1 on the airplay chart.

- There were only three new entries in the Top 40 today, but they all come from The Weeknd thanks to the release of his surprise EP! The highest new arrival is ‘Call Out My Name’, which enters straight in at #7. Between this & the other two tracks from the EP, The Weeknd has now make 16 appearances inside the Top 40! The first thought that came to mind when I was hearing this is how much this is trying to match the vibe of his previous hit called ‘Earned It’! Despite me only finding that song decent, I think it does make a reasonable resemblance to it, especially on how well it capitalises the same tempo from the waltz cadence & this utilises the Nicolas Jaar sample fine enough & just when I was about to get slightly bored of this, from out of nowhere we get: blaring, blown-out vocals, which might seem a little too distorted, but it’s definitely an interesting risk that gave this an interesting yet haunting atmosphere. It might not be my favourite track from the EP, but I definitely see why it’s become the most popular. Overall, it’s not bad, but I think if you liked The Weeknd’s last two albums that really propelled him into the mainstream, you might end up disappointed.

- Up next, ‘Try Me’ enters the Official Chart today at #17! One thing I can praise The Weeknd for is his falsetto, which he hits fairly well here, even if he has done a better job at it in the past. I don’t deny that for a EP focussed mainly on $ex & break-ups, his crooning voice over the dark trap production leads to a suspenseful tense mood & where along with the gummy synths, this sounds like a trap makeover of Dr Dre’s ‘Keep Their Heads Ringin’. This might not be anything amazing, but it’s definitely one of the more memorable tracks from this project, so check it out if you’re curious!

- The final of the three tracks that charted from ‘My Dear Melancholy’ is called ‘Wasted Times’, making its chart debut at #18 this week. This kicks off with The Weeknd trashed in bed with a hook-up that he seems bored of, only to snap back to that memory of an ex & how things ended badly between them, although he also make it clear what her intentions were. However, it doesn’t help how contradictory this song is in particular, where he tries make his rebound after releasing how much this girl in particular (supposedly Selena Gomez or Bella Hadid) put him through tough times, but he lets them know that $ex is still an option. While his vocals & the beat are fine for the most part, especially the pairing of Frank Dukes & Skrillex, I really don’t like the autotuned part towards the end of the song. The Weeknd said he’s going back to his earlier sound, but the music he put out before he became big was better than this (as were his ‘Beauty Behind The Madness’ & ‘Starboy’ albums), so unless you’ve been a fan from the start, I’d personally skip this.

- On the albums chart, ‘The Greatest Showman’ rebounds 2-1 for a 12th non-consecutive week. It shifted 43,000 copies across sales & streaming, giving it its third best performing week. It’s also #1 on the Official Vinyl Albums chart this week!

- The rest of the Top 5 is: ‘Staying At Tamara’s’ by George Ezra (1-2, ‘My Dear Melancholy’ by The Weeknd (debuts at #3), ‘Combat Sports’ by The Vaccines (debut at #4), ‘÷’ by Ed Sheeran (3-5).

- Looking ahead to next week, these songs could enter the Top 40 for the first time: ‘One Kiss’ by Calvin Harris & Dua Lipa, ‘Hard 2 Face Reality’ by Bear ft Justin Bieber & Jay Electronica, ‘No Roots’ by Alice Merton, ‘Mad Love’ by David Guetta & Sean Paul ft Becky G, 'Delicate' by Taylor Swift, 'Answerphone' by Banx & Ranx ft Ella Eyre & Yxng Bane, Drake's new single being released tonight, a track or two from Cardi B’s new album & maybe even more.

- Thanks for reading everyone! I hope you all have a good weekend. :)

Hey Piran! Freaky Friday at #1 is a pleasant surprise, I was thinking #5 would be it's peak due to it not getting much airplay but here we are! I don't expect it to be #1 next week, but it's nice to see a comedy song at the top after so long! Other than that this week has been a little boring for new entries, and out of The Weeknd's 3 songs from My Dear Melancholy, I only really like Call Out My Name. Paradise sadly doesn't have much of a chance for #1 now, but I'm happy it got to #2 nonetheless.

Next week will probably be exciting though, as along with all the songs you have mentioned, Drake has another new single which is being released tonight, making sure he isn't out of the Top 10 for too long. I can see These Days finally declining and dropping a few places, and a close battle between One Kiss and Drake's new song for #1, as well as This Is Me sticking around for a few more weeks

I really love that 'Freaky Friday' reached #1. I thought it might, but it's great that it actually did. Now I'm just interested to find out whether 'God's Plan' would've been #1, #2 or #3 this week without the 300:1 ratio. I would guess #3, but I'm not sure. If it would've been #3, though, this would've been the 9th consecutive week at #2 for 'These Days', completely smashing the previous record.

I absolutely love that The Weeknd had 3 new entries in the Top 20. I've been listening to 'My Dear Melancholy,' non-stop since I first heard it, and all of the tracks on it are still gaining in performance for me! It looks like they made a change to the streaming chart though, as 'I Was Never There', 'Hurt You' and 'Privilege' are nowhere to be found on it, even though they all streamed enough to likely make the Top 40 and definitely the Top 100. I think that The Weeknd would've had at least 5 new entries in the Top 40 this week if he could.

Not really a fan of seeing 'The Greatest Showman' return to #1, but I do love that 'My Dear Melancholy,' entered the Top 3 without even a physical release. This week is also the lowest one for '÷' for quite some time. Do you think that Ed will release a '÷ (Wembley Edition)' when he performs at Wembley later this year like he did with 'x'?

Next week could be a pretty exciting one, as 'One Kiss' should make a debut in the Top 10, and 'Hard 2 Face Reality' should reach the Top 40. Apparently Drake is also releasing a new track tonight, which will almost definitely reach the Top 10. I hope that 'Call Out My Name' will stay in the Top 10, as well.

Gameskiller, God's Plan was still the most streamed song on Spotify without taking ACR into account, so I think it would've been at #2

Hey Gameskiller! I hope you've had a good week. :)
Yeah, it's really cool to see 'Freaky Friday' at #1! I think 'Freaky Friday' would definitely have been above 'God's Plan' had the new streaming rules not existed, but I'm not sure if it 'These Days' would also have been above it. I'd have guessed #3 too. When do you see 'These Days' getting hit by the 300:1 streaming ratio then? I thought it might have happened by now.
Did they put the "three songs at most per artist" rule into the sales & streaming charts too? Another thing that confuses me is why neither 'Friends' nor 'The Middle' are eligible to chart on the dance charts, as both clearly fit into that genre.
I really love that 'The Greatest Showman' is back at #1, probably because not only did I like the soundtrack anyway, but I finally watched the film last Wednesday & it definitely met the high expectations I had for it!
Yeah, there haven't been many weeks where '÷' hasn't been in the Top 5 & that nearly happened this week, but I do indeed think there'll be a re-release of that album after his tour.
The Spotify charts don't appear to be working at the moment, but when they refresh, I think 'Nice For What' could very well be on top there, although 'Freaky Friday' had a good lead on sales by the end of the tracking week & had almost caught up with 'God's Plan' on streaming, so I think Lil Dicky & Chris Brown might be top again next week.
That said, I agree that 'One Kiss' is debuting in at least the Top 10 & another song that could do so is the winner's single from The Voice, as that has massive sales right now, although I have a feeling it won't do that well on streaming.

Hey Ted! I hope you had a nice weekend. :)
Regarding 'Freaky Friday', remember that airplay doesn't directly affect the charts & with last week's tracking week, it jumped well ahead on iTunes in the last couple of days & was the most streamed song of the week without ACR (even if that new rule hadn't existed, 'God's Plan' would only be very slightly above it on that metric anyway).
I don't see 'Paradise' going to #1 now that the album hype has faded & 'These Days' probably isn't returning as it'll get hit ACR very soon.
'Nice For What' & 'One Kiss' should debut in at least the Top 10, but I can't check their Spotify figures as the archives don't seem to be working there at the moment. Another song that could get a Top 10 debut is the winner's single from The Voice; it has massive sales currently, but I don't see that lasting long & it won't get much streaming either probably, if other winner's singles from that show are anything to go by.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that 'Freaky Friday' would've still been #1 regardless. Since there were only 51 sales between 'God's Plan' and 'These Days' last week without the 300:1 ratio, I think that 'These Days' would've overtaken 'God's Plan' as well. I can see 'These Days' getting hit by the 300:1 ratio in 2 week's time though, as it increased last week but probably decreased this week.
They haven't put the 3 per artist rule on the sales or streaming charts. I just missed the other 3 songs by The Weeknd because they don't have their album art on the charts. All 6 songs from 'My Dear Melancholy,' debuted in the Top 40 on the streaming chart, like I thought they would.
The Spotify charts are working again, and 'Freaky Friday' is still on top! 500k streams for it compared to 'God's Plan's 465k and 'Nice For What's 463k. I wouldn't be surprised at all if 'Nice For What' climbed to the top in the next couple of days though.
I think that next week the #1 will be between 'Freaky Friday', 'One Kiss' and 'Nice For What', with 'Freaky Friday' in the lead right now. Surprisingly for a Drake single, 'Nice For What' is doing quite well on sales, currently at #4 on iTunes and it was at #3 before 'Dreams' absolutely stormed to the top. However, 'Dreams' didn't even chart in the Spotify Top 200, so I can't see that going to #1.
Currently, 'Freaky Friday' is #3 on iTunes and #1 on Spotify, 'One Kiss' is #2 on iTunes and #4 on Spotify, and 'Nice For What' is #4 on iTunes and #3 on Spotify.

avatar

Piran

I think the Official Chart Update today counted mostly sales & hardly any streaming data, as they have 'Dreams' debuting at #1, while 'Nice For What' is only expected to make #8.
That said, there'll definitely be some Spotify numbers missing, but I see it being between 'Freaky Friday' & 'Nice For What' for the top spot, with 'One Kiss' debuting at #3.
'Dreams' will probably be lower Top 10 & it'll probably face similar to what happened to 'This Is Me' in last week's update, although in this case, it's only entering thanks to downloads alone, as it has negligible airplay & streaming.

avatar

Foxes

1

Yeah, it would make sense if it was missing Spotify data since Spotify Charts wasn't working for most of the weekend. I can't see 'Dreams' debuting at #1 either since it has never entered the Spotify Top 200. To get to #1 with negligible streaming you've got to have absurdly high sales, like 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' last year. 'Dreams' will likely debut much lower in the Top 10.
Now that 'Nice For What' has taken its place on Spotify - #1, with over 100,000 more streams than 'Freaky Friday' - and since it is continuing to do well on sales, I think that we're going to be seeing another #1 from Drake this coming week. He really does have a stranglehold over the charts at the moment. Without taking the 300:1 ratio into account, he spent 10 weeks at #1 with 'God's Plan', let go of the top spot for a single week to let 'Freaky Friday' have a week in the spotlight, before releasing a new song that is likely to debut at #1 as well! I can't see 'Nice For What' spending as long at #1 as 'God's Plan' did, but I think at least a month at #1 is inevitable.
'Freaky Friday' will almost definitely be #2 if 'Nice For What' debuts at #1, and 'One Kiss' will probably be #3. At least it will be a much more exciting week for the charts! 2 Top 3 debuts in the same week doesn't happen too often.
'Nice For What' also only needs to spend 5 weeks at #1 for Drake to match Justin Bieber and Ed Sheeran's 30 weeks for the most weeks at #1 this decade, and 6 weeks to beat it. He already has the most at #1 as the lead artist, with 24 to Ed's 23 and Justin's 14.

Piran

How well did 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' do on streaming in the end, because I think it was in the
Top 10 best selling songs of 2017 without even making the Top 100 in the main chart for last year.
Do you see 'One Kiss' being a future #1 eventually? I think it'll definitely top the airplay chart & maybe even the Big Top 40 as we go into the summer.
Yeah, 'Nice For What' moved up to 631,000 streams on Spotify today, which should give it a comfortable lead on streaming overall this week, but 'One Kiss' is outselling it by nearly double currently, so I think that might still be a #1 contender on Friday after all (it's almost overtaken 'Dreams' on iTunes already). I'll say this though, for a winner's single from The Voice, Ruti certainly hasn't done bad on downloads at all & if this happened before 2013, she'd easily be taking the #1, but yeah, lower Top 10 is more likely for her currently & then maybe dropping out of the Top 40 all together the following week.

avatar

Foxes

'Bridge Over Troubled Water' sold 120,000 on its first day and a further 50,000 on its second, which makes for 170,000 for its first week since it was released on a Wednesday. Of that 170,000, just 1,785 of those came from streams. I have no idea how it fared after that, but it fell out of the Top 40 pretty quickly despite debuting at #1, so I think it's safe to say that it didn't hold up very well over time.
I can absolutely see 'One KIss' hitting #1. I think it could actually debut at #1 this coming week. It'll be between 'One KIss' and 'Nice For What', I'm pretty sure, with 'Freaky Friday' at #3. 'One Kiss' has moved up to #2 on Spotify now, though it's still 133,000 streams behind 'Nice For What', and it's reclaimed the #1 spot on iTunes. 'Nice For What' is still doing surprisingly well for a Drake single over there, though, currently at #4 on roughly half the sales of 'One Kiss'. I would guess that 'One Kiss' will sell roughly 16,000 and get around 30,000 from streams, while 'Nice For What' will probably sell around 10,000 and get around 37,500 from streams, so it really will be close.
I do think that if 'One Kiss' debuts at #1 this week, 'Nice For What' will hit #1 next week. 'Nice For What' had the disadvantage of being released roughly 28 hours into the tracking week, so that's a good 750,000 streams and 2,000 sales that Drake missed out on across all platforms.
