Guys isn't it annoying how the good songs from an album fall out the top 40 and the bad ones stay in

Looks like reahead Ed bought the Hot 100...

Nice to see Gorillaz with two songs on the chart. In the US, there will probably not even be one.

Love or hate him, you have to give Ed credit. The fact that Shape of You is under 200,000 thousand sales away from selling more than one dance, the biggest song of last year is incredible assuming were in the 4th month of the year. Really is a incredible achievement. Kygo also deserves credit for jumping 12 places back up to number 7.
Good to also see Martin Garrix and Dua Lipa climb with Scared To Be Lonley.
Hopefully next week, Cheat Codes and Little Mix can make appearances in the top 40 with there new ones. the later is almost certain to with the itunes discount.

Surprised at the sight of Goillaz even in the top 100

I'm surprised too. Won't even happen in the US probably, I expect them to barely make Bubbling Under over there.

What a boring week in the charts. FFS somebody take Shape of You off the top spot. BTW I ain't doing ratings until most of the Drake songs fall out of the charts

Symphony is new number 1 on the proper chart (sales chart)

Wow, fantastic, amazing chart, such variety both in the artists included & the way all of the tracks sound. So original everyone, well done!!!! Shut the door on your way out though will you.

Hope 'Symphony' rises to #1. That Shape of You song is the most un-original and annoying thing i've heard in so much time. It doesn't deserve its success at all.
Oh, and there's even a worst song called 'Galway Girl'... I don't know why Ed Sheeran is so overrated when his songs are all based on plagiarism, fake personality and cliche, cloying lyrics as .

avatar

So a lot of his songs are still there.
Does anyone read these charts anymore. So useless

Ed Sheeran with "Shape of You" is Number One for 12 weeks! Can he beat Frankie Laine's "I Believe" record?

avatar

Paul Mount

It means nothing nowadays. Streaming and downloading has made this chart utterly irrelevent.

R

RIME

*looks at Physical chart where Blondie's leading, Disturbed's Sound of Silence is top 10 in its 37th week, and there are 2 songs in the top 40 with over 70 weeks, and 1 top 30 even with over 80 weeks*

Uh huh...yeah, you're gonna have to at least concede that downloads of singles are relevant.

avatar

Painmix King

0

No, Frankie Laine stayed at No. 1 through sales alone and the sales chart should be the principal chart nowadays too. Nobody's mentioning the Physical chart. Downloads that are paid for make up the sales chart as well as physical sales
Which by the way has Galway Girl at No. 1

R

RIME

0

I'm responding to Paul Mount's assertion that "streaming *and* downloading" made the chart irrelevant. You appear to already agree with me that paid downloads do in fact matter.

avatar

Jamie Crampton

1

Paid sales are relevant in any form of singles chart compilation. Streaming and airplay are not. Occ won't change unless forced to by e.g. The BBC so these charts as a measure of singles popularity are meaningless.

"Shape of You" by Ed Sheeran remains at number 1 on the Official UK Singles Chart for a 12th straight week. The song has already reached number one in more than 30 countries "Galway Girl", also by Ed Sheeran, remains at number 2.

"Passionfruit" by Drake rises from number 4 to number 3 this week. The song is the second single off Drake's new playlist, "More Life" (also known as More Life: A Playlist by October Firm), which was released on March 18, 2017 by Young Money Entertainment and Cash Money Records.

"Symphony" by Clean Bandit featuring Zara Larsson rises two places to number 4 this week.

"Still Got Time" by Zayn featuring PartyNextDoor debuts on the chart at number 24. It's the first single from Malik's upcoming second studio album. The song was produced by Murda Beatz ("No Frauds" by Nicki Minaj featuring Drake and Lil' Wayne) and Frank Dukes ("Fake Love").

My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as always…
- ‘Shape Of You’ by Ed Sheeran earns a 12th consecutive week at #1 on the Official Charts. As I said back on Monday’s update article, as much as I think it’s a decent song, it’s also becoming both overrated & overplayed. It’s got the point where the magnitude of its appeal is becoming annoying; there are far better tracks from Ed’s ‘÷’ album that deserve this level of success.
- There are still only two songs in the chart right now that could challenge for #1 in the next week or two; ‘Galway Girl’ by Ed Sheeran (which has good sales & good streaming) or ‘Symphony’ by Clean Bandit ft Zara Larsson (which has excellent sales & decent streaming). I like both of these way more than ‘Shape Of You’, so I’d be happy with either taking #1 next.
- ‘Chained To The Rhythm’ by Katy Perry ft Skip Marley leads the UK radio airplay chart for a fourth consecutive week.
- Drake earns his 10th Top 10 hit in the UK as ‘Blem’ climbs 14-10. Of all of the songs on ‘More Life’, I don’t understand why this has been one of the most successful so far. The tropical beat is decent but has become so generic over these past few months, Drake’s vocals sound dreary & boring like on most of the playlist & if you Google the word ‘Blem’, you’ll understand another reason why I lose respect for this song.
- There was only one new arrival in the Top 40 this week; ‘Still Got Time’ by ZAYN ft PARTYNEXTDOOR enters at #24, becoming the former’s 23rd UK Top 40 hit (18 with 1D & 5 as a solo artist). I can see why this song wasn’t on Zayn’s ‘Mind Of Mine’ album, because it strays away from the R&B scene & sees him move back slightly into pop with a catchy & groovy dancehall anthem. It would’ve been nice to have had more interesting verses from PARTYNEXTDOOR though. Overall, ‘Still Got Time’ is good, but not great.
- Although this is mostly due to the continued losses for the Ed Sheeran & Drake albums tracks, the biggest climbers in the Top 40 this week were: ‘Paris’ by The Chainsmokers (38-29), ‘Green Light’ (40-26, new peak), ‘Scared To Be Lonely’ by Martin Garrix & Dua Lipa (30-20) & ‘That’s What I Like’ by Bruno Mars (25-15, new peak) & ‘Issues’ by Julia Michaels (28-13, new peak). I would rate these songs: 8/10, 9/10, 7/10, 9/10 & 6/10 respectively, so a really positive week in terms of climbers.
- On the albums chart, it’s four weeks at #1 for ‘÷’ by Ed Sheeran. The rest of the Top 5 is: ‘Wonderland’ by Take That (debuts at #2), ‘More Life’ by Drake (2-3), ‘Human’ by Rag’n’Bone Man (5-4) & ‘100’ by Vera Lynn (3-5). ‘Wonderland’ is Take That’s 11th Top 10 album!
- For next Friday, new Top 40 arrivals could include: ‘Heatstroke’ by Calvin Harris ft Young Thug, Pharrell Williams & Ariana Grande, ‘Waterfall’ by Stargate ft P!NK & Sia, ‘No Promises’ by Cheat Codes ft Demi Lovato, ‘Humble’ by Kendrick Lamar & more.
- Overall, nothing too interesting happened this week, but I’m ecstatic to see ‘It Ain’t Me’ rebound to its peak (19-7). Thanks for reading everyone & have a nice weekend. :)

Hey Piran! So I noticed the counter for the charts refreshed was an hour earlier than I'd have expected and I figured DST came into effect in the UK. Anyway, I see all the songs from More Life and ÷ are still around, but the latter ones have held up better overall in their fourth week vs. the former ones second week.

As to the risers you mentioned I do like all of those songs. I still haven't heard Zayn's new song, so I'll listen to it and let you know on Sunday what I think of it. Too bad for Chained to the Rhythm that radio doesn't count for it in the Singles chart or it would be doing better. Also, I see that You Want Me and Bad & Boujee are getting close to dropping out. Now if we could only get rid of Solo Dance ... I also want to hear the new Cheat Codes song.

BTW, I posted some radio update observations in the Hot 100 article.

Anyway, I guess people got caught by the DST so that they missed the new chart refresh (guess they don't actually live in the UK).

If I don't hear from you before Sunday, have a good weekend and I'll see you on the BB 200 article. ;)

avatar

Piran

1

Hey Techfan! :)
Yeah, all clocks in the UK went one hour forward last Sunday for DST, so that's why the charts are an hour earlier than expected for people living outside of the country. That's why a couple of weeks ago, the Billboard articles posted an hour earlier than I thought they would, as the US were in DST & the UK weren't.
Well I found the Cheat Codes & Demi Lovato collaboration only decent at first listen, but I'm very sure it'll grow on me as I like all of their songs.
It's good to see that 'Bad & Boujee' & 'You Want Me' are dropping fast, but while I think 'Solo Dance' is average, it'll likely not climb any more & stay in the lower Top 10 for about a month. The good news for you is that I see 'Issues' getting into the Top 10 possibly as soon as next week. :D
I'll certainly try to check out your radio observations on the Hot 100 article if I have time to get to them later. I'm going home this weekend for my Mum's 50th birthday, so I'll be very busy over the next couple of days. Anyway, have a good night! ;)

1

Hey Sunshine Gal! I hope you're good today. :)
What do you think of the latest UK chart then?

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

i'm still on fb and twitter, but it's very cool ed's locked the top 3...going on 3 wks straight, right? on the hot 100, it'd be a history making feat ;)

avatar

Piran

1

That ended this week, but Ed's still got the Top 2; 'Shape Of You' at #1 & 'Galway Girl' at #2.
I think he managed to get the entire Top 3 for the previous three weeks like you said though! ;)

R

RIME

0

Not this week: Drake cuts it off with a 4-3 rise as Symphony also climbs 6-4, meaning Castle on the Hill gets shunted down 3-5. It ends a 3-week consecutive top 3 Ed lock though.

avatar

Techfan

2

I see that Liverpool's playing Everton early 2mor and Man City vs. Arsenal on Sunday. Those will be tough matches.

I'm glad you can go home to celebrate your Mum's b-day just a week after your own. ;)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

yeah, over here, not too my knowledge has an artist been able to do that. maybe usher or 50 cent. but i forget today if they were able to lock the top 3 positions for 3 wks straight...brb ;)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

hey good morning buddy! did you catch all the michael flynn reporting on cnn all yesterday and today? yikes! oh 1 question: you know how ed's locked the top 3 for 3 wks straight here? has anyone done that on the hot 100? usher, 50 cent?

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, both of those matches will be interesting. Meanwhile, Sunshine Gal's team have a relatively easy game against Crystal Palace! LOL
Well Mother's Day & my birthday were actually on the same day this year (I know your part of the world celebrate it on a different day to ours), so when I go home, it will be a double celebration. :D

avatar

Piran

1

What about The Beatles? I know they're still the only act ever to occupy the entire Top 5 spots on the Hot 100 at the same time. :)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

they did that for 3+ wks? well, 'i wanna hold your hand' was an unusual ly long #1...from what i know of the chart back then, it'd be very rare to go that many wks @ #1. let's see what techfan says to all that :)

avatar

Techfan

2

Hey Sunshine Gal! No, I just saw that thanks to you. Remember the week The Beatles had the Top 5 songs in the Hot 100. It turns out they also had the Top 3 ones for 3 weeks before that for a total of 4 consecutive weeks! 50 Cent came close to having a Top 3 for at least one week but his other two songs were at #4 and #5 for two weeks. ;)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

0

the current singles chart up right now isn't for this week? i see ed in all the top 3 spots...? or are you talking about next week's chart?

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

oh, so the beatles were the last act to do that??!! wow!! or actually, they're still the only act since ed's feat is on the uk charts :D. usher never locked the top 3 for 3 wks?

avatar

Sunshine Gal

never mind, i see on the homepage in the right corner the current chart...i see drake @ #3 ;)

avatar

Piran

1

I don't know how long The Beatles held the Top 3 spots for. I knew they got the entire Top 5 for one week though.
How long was 'I Wanna Hold Your Hand' at #1 in the US for then? :)

avatar

Techfan

1

Yeah, I think I already knew Mother's Day was on Sunday in the UK from something they posted in Official Charts earlier week. I had no idea was Mothering Sunday was until just now and that it's related to Easter. So do they tend to schedule holidays in the UK for them to fall on a particular weekday as they do in the US? I know that Boxing Day depends on when Christmas falls.

R

RIME

0

He got 3 #1s, but they all fended off different artists' challenges, plus none of them were all in the top 3 at the same time, much less consecutively. By the third single #3 got in, Confessions, Yeah was down to #10. He also doesn't have a consecutive #1 record, sadly, thanks to American Idol getting Fantasia a one-week #1 debut.

avatar

Techfan

1

Not only the last one but the only one. In Usher's case Confessions Part II climbed up too late for him to have a chance to get the Top 3 for one week.

avatar

Sunshine Gal

0

what i meant, was if usher locked the top 3 spots for 3 wks like ed did ;). i know usher had 3 #1's off the confessions album, i was following the hot 100 back then :). um, what do you mean he didn't have a consecutive #1? you mean for a long period of time? i recall 'yeah' getting something like 10+ wks @ #1.

R

RIME

0

I mean, that's the phase in which he had a string of hits (his 90s era had them stretched out over the years, and he hasn't anything big recently, so the only opportunity was 2004). When I say consecutive, I mean that the crown position of the chart gets usurped from an artist by that same artist. It happened between Yeah! and Burn, and it happened between Burn and Confessions, but in between those two things happening, Burn was usurped by I Believe and had to get the top back, meaning he wasn't able to string the 3 number ones in a row.

avatar

Piran

0

Well most holidays over here are always on the same day & never change. For example, Boxing Day is always 26th December & that's the same every year.
Mother's Day & Easter though are exceptions & the dates for those do change each year.
Easter Sunday is always the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring Equinox apparently & is hence a different day each year. ;)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

0

oh yeah that's right! she debuted @ #1! i knew he had 3 top 10's in the same week, but vaguely recalled if all 3 held the top spots 3 wks straight.

avatar

Sunshine Gal

0

well, even if he doesn't he's still the top hot 100 artist of the 00's. i actually had a huge blast following bb that year, esp. the hot 100 :) he was in the top 10 almost the entire year.

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

7 wks...well, the beatles are the only act to lock the top 3 spots for 3+ wks on the hot 100. i recalled that 50 cent and usher had mult. top 10's in the same week, but forgot how long it was :D

avatar

Piran

1

Wow... so no act has ever held the entire Top 3 spots for 3+ weeks in the UK; Ed got to three weeks & then JB is the only other artist to do with one week. ;)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

that was shocking for me to see ed lock almost the entire top 20 :D if the hot 100 allowed mj on the hot 100 after he passed, i think he could've done it. but they had that stupid rule about older songs being ineligible. but watch the 10th anniversary of his passing ;)

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, even though I knew Ed's album got lots of streaming, I didn't think 16 spots in the Top 20 was possible! :O
Well remember what I was telling you about MJ having 27 songs in the Top 100 over here in the week after he died? That was without recurrent rules & I know his popularity was even greater in the US.

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

yeah on the hot 100 recurrent chart, he flooded the whole chart and that's 100 entries! but i have a feeling he'll be back in full force on both charts ;). unless there's another rule change *rolls eyes* i think mj can do what ed did ;) maybe even moreso :)

Oh yeah, can't believe Calvin Harris has done a song with Ariana Grande, stop with the R&B , you're selling out to the Americans...

I thought it was decent, but I wouldn't spend 99p on buying it.

It's not as bad as 'Slide', but far from Calvin Harris' best.
I wish he would go back to making the EDM that he did in 2010-11. :/
