At last some REAL MUSIC at nro 1 on the album´s chart, KATE BUSH! 38 years ago she was nro 1 and now 38 later she´s still number 1. What does that tell you? It´s wise to make music that lasts through decades don´t you think?! I grew with Kate´s music and that hasn't´t changed. I still love her music. It´s timeless and as fresh as the day she has released her albums and singles. I just hope her "new" single "The Dream Of Sheep" will also get to number 1 on singles chart. She deserves it!! Anyone with me on this?

It'd be cool if Human went to number 1

Nice to see British singer-songwriter Rag'n'Bone Man finally charting in his own country. He already topped the singles charts in many European countries with "Human".

Do you lot work for the chart? Only your talk about the spice girls is clever way to deflect away the fact it's another top 40 with almost zero new songs. If people want change - a decent chart without stagnation - we need to moan and continue the battle! Talking about the spice girls ain't gonna improve the top 40!

How much longer will these joke charts be allowed to continue? Virtually no movement in the Top 20 and proper pop tunes struggling to gain a foothold against the tide of streamed mindless anonymous dance and rap .

The charts are fine, since all of those 20 songs are popular right now

I wish I had better news for you. 86% of singles 'sales' comes from streaming this week and it's highly probable this number will increase next year, so the singles chart is basically a streaming chart. The chart compilers obviously cater to a younger crowd and are happy with the situation, otherwise they would adjust their methodology (because they can). And let's not forget the strong business partnerships with streaming providers.
I'm glad I could experience the 'golden days' of music charts in the 90s and 00s where we had so much variety and no age limits. I wonder if the younger people here can even imagine musicians over 40 having number one singles.
My biggest critique of the current system is that we have so many successful no.1 albums without any top 10 (or even top 40!) singles. Very few artists seem to achieve this feat nowadays.

Agree with you totally Paul - the charts are ridiculous - representative perhaps of less than 1% of the buying public and their tastes. Robbie Williams must be beside himself after investing so much time and effort into his latest album, only to see both of the singles released so far totally bomb out, barely scraping the Top 40. Imagine if record companies take these weekly charts seriously, investment will fall through the floor. Established artists are failing very, very badly and not charting (take Bon Jovi for example)......

"Rockabye" by Clean Bandit (feat Sean Paul & Anne-Marie) remains at number 1 for a third straight week. It first reached number one on November 11, 2016, and has been there since. Both Sean Paul and Anne-Marie have two songs on the Top 100 charts (one as a lead artist, and the other as a featured artist). Sean Paul has "No Lie" (feat Dua Lipa) at number 53, and is featured on "Rockabye". Anne-Marie has "Alarm" at number 31, and is also featured on "Rockabye". It is important to note that Sean Paul is also featured on the official remix of "Cheap Thrills" by Sia, however that version is not on the charts this week- the original version (done solely by Sia) is on the charts at number 43.
"Black Beatles" by Rae Sremmurd (feat Guwop) is at number 2 this week. This is officially the most successful song of their careers.
"Mr. Brightside" by the Killers (currently at number 83) has now been on the charts for a total 148 weeks. It was originally released on September 29, 2003 and achieved minor success. It become more popular upon its re-release in 2004. "Mr. Brightside" was named "Song of the Decade" by UK radio stations Absolute and XFM. In October, 2010 it was voted ninth in the Greatest Guitar Riffs of the 21st Century so far by Total Guitar Magazine.

Little Mix have made history, yet again. Their latest album "Glory Days" is the quickest selling album by a girl group since "Spice World" by the Spice Girls (released in 1997). "Glory Days" is also the second quickest selling album of the year after the great David Bowie's final album "Blackstar" released in January. Little Mix rose to fame when they won the X Factor UK in 2011, becoming the first and so far only, group to do so. Little Mix and Fifth Harmony have brought girl groups back to the forefront of the music business. My favorite song on the album is "Touch" which was produced by MNEK ("Hold Up" by Beyoncé), and Meagan Cottone ("Up" by Olly Murs).

We are now only weeks away from finding out which song will be this year's Christmas number one. How great would it be if it was "Hallelujah" by the great Leonard Cohen?

ok, so we'll take a look @ the spice girls 2nd album and batch of singles in the u.s. *3rd album quickly fizzled out*. here's a look back @ their 2nd album's batch of singles:

1. 'spice up your life' enters on 11/8/1997 @ #32-27-19-18 *final peak*. the top 10 during the week of the spice girls' final peak has too many mainstays incl. the mega hit by leann rimes 'how do i live' *still holds the all time top 10 record on the hot 100 chart, 32 straight wks*. also, elton john's 'candle in the wind' is making it's 14 wk run @ #1. but 'spice up your life' will remain in the bottom part of the top 20 (17-20) for a good 2 mos. basically, u.s. radio is heavily playing it each week, but not enough as the top 10 hits.

2. 'too much' enters on 2/14/1998 @ #22-9!! *final peak* but remains in the top 10 for 1 week and falls out of the top 20 in 3 wks.

3. 'stop!' enters on 6/20/1998 @ #36-19-16 *final peak* and falls out of top 20 in 1 wk.

so, obviously it's a lil' harder *even with a hit movie in america accompanying the soundtrack/2nd album* to keep their momentum going. my opinion, it might've been too soon to do a follow up album since their last single on the debut album would've just left the top 10 about 5 mos. prior. i say, this wasn't good timing and maybe after xmas would've been a better timing for both the 2nd album and movie debuts.

'spiceworld' *2nd u.s. album* enters the 200 albums chart on 11/22/1997 @ #8 & will go up and down in the top 10 until hitting a peak @ #3 on 2/14/1998. that week, the spice girls will have 2 albums in the top with 'spiceworld' @ #3 and 'spice' @ #10. 'spiceworld' will reach 4x plat. and will spend a lil' over 3 mos. in the top 10

well, of course it's always easy to look back on all this later and say 'this what you should've done instead' :D i do think their follow up came too quick and their label should've spaced out both albums to kind of give everyone a break from 'spicemania'. in 1998, we had huge blockbusters like the titantic soundtrack-11x plat., celine's 'let's talk about love'-10x plat., shania twain's 'come on over'-20x plat.....obviously lots of stiff competition.

the spice girls' 2nd album and batch of singles came out almost immediately after the debut batch's both fell out of the top 40 on both charts...obviously big mistake! nothing wrong with being out of the top 10 and even top 40 on either chart, esp. if you've had very good and lengthy runs on both charts. you can always come back ;). and even though i wasn't a big fan of theirs back then, i have to say, it sure was fun seeing them in the top 10 week after week after week for months! :D so, def. a still very impressive u.s. debut for the spice girls and other uk acts can look upon the spice girls u.s. splash for inspiration.

hey what's up everyone! this coming jan. will mark the spice girls' 20th anniversary of their debut on the u.s. hot 100 singles chart with their debut single 'wannabe'. even today, they're still the first and only uk group to have their lead single to go to #1 in the u.s. here's a look back on their 1st batch of singles' and albums' chart runs:

1. 'wannabe' enters the hot 100 on 1/25/1997 @ #11-6-4-2-1! will spend 4 wks @ #1 and spend 3 1/2 mos. in the top 10.

2. 'say you will be there' enters on 5/24/1997 @ #5-3 *final peak* spends about 7 wks in the top 10.

3. '2 become 1' enters on 2/22/1997 @ #6!!-5-5-4 *final peak* and will spend 7 wks in the top 10.

so, looking back on the spice girls' first batch of singles...they certainly sparked a lot of interest with u.s. radio ;) *i also recall their 1st vid getting heavy rotation on mtv*. i know that to many people in the uk, another reason why the spice girls were so big in america was because there was an absense of other british groups @ the time in the u.s. i slightly disagree with that...while being from england can make an artist seem more interesting to u.s. music fans, but it'd had been awhile since we'd have any female pop groups do well in the u.s. music scene. the current crop of female groups that were the hitmakers in america were: swv, tlc, xscape, en vogue...all r & b female groups. no fun, upbeat female pop groups.

another reason i think the spice girls did so well over here, they were so different from everyone else ;). they said and did whatever they wanted :D the spice girls were the perfect example of 'you just have to be yourself'. there's no other way to put it. while i wasn't a big fan of theirs during this time, i have to say, not only had it been some time since a british group did well in the u.s., it'd been quite some time since a female group had a start like theirs. even tlc, the first female group to achieve a diamond album in the u.s., didn't have the same kind of start the spice girls did.

here's a look @ the spice girls' u.s. debut album:

'spice' enters the 200 albums chart on 2/22/1997 @ #6! will remain in the top 10 and outside from the #1 spot until 5/24/1997 *1st wk @ #1*. spends 5 chopped wks @ #1 and will spend 7 straight mos. in the top 10. album will reach 7x plat. and become bb's #1 album of the year.

looking back on all this right now, i gotta hand it to the spice girls for being able to build that momentum and keeping it going ;). they were up against some huge popular acts like celine dion *her album 'falling into you' would also be in the top 10 @ the same time, remain in the top 10 for 1 yr and will go 10x plat.-diamond*, no doubt, leann rimes.

when the spice girls' album was on a roll in the beginning of the year, i do recall that they limited the # of u.s. interviews they did and just quietly remained in the background for a *short LOL!* while. so, when the going is good, you keep it going ;). in retrospect, a great debut splash from an unknown international act *i never heard of them until they came to the u.s.* and they obviously did something right! :)

Loved the SGs and their debut album especially, wannabe was and still is an example of a perfect pop song but they were more than just another girl group, they were a whole movement and it was just a crazy time for them no doubt, the whole world literally went girl power crazy! 1996 - when their first 3 singles hit number 1 - was undoubtedly their year and again it wasn't just about the music, that period was a kinda golden era to be British, what with BritPop, Euro 96 (football tournament) and films such as Trainspotting, it really was a time that felt so cool to be British! And it was the best time of my life, so many memories that I will forever cherish, which is probably why Iove those first 3 SG singles so much - they take me back to those heady days, especially 2 Become 1,wow, the memories still seem so vivid every time I hear that song or See the video, great times!! Big thanks for these Spice Girl throwback posts Sunshine Gal✌👌🙌

your welcome mate ;). i'll keep bringing throwbacks over here, i did write quite a few over on bb. we have more chart followers so over there it would generate lots of interest. my mate piran loves them! i did do some throwbacks over here on some of the biggest u.s. acts, not too much interest ;D so i'll spotlight past uk acts that have been to the u.s. ;) glad you liked them :)

The longevity of the Spice Girl's debut album in your country was awesome! So it spent 3 & a half months in the Top 10 of the BB200 before reaching #1? It's also great how they got two singles from it debuting in the Top 10 of the Hot 100. :)
I saw that their second album didn't perform quite as well, but how successful was the movie in the US then? :D
Thanks for posting these throwbacks as always Sunshine Gal! I can't wait to see who you're going to choose next! ;)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

hey mate!! good morning! well, i do have my throwbacks ready for next frid. ;). well with the spice girls 1st album, even i was surprised that they'd be in the top 10 and were blocked from the #1 spot. and i recall their movie was very successful here. i had younger cousins that were crazy about them, so of course, i'm buying all kinds of spice girls stuff :D i took them to see the movie...i still think the 2nd album and movie could've came out later.

avatar

Piran

1

Well I'm having a look at The Spice Girls' UK chart history & they had 9 UK #1 singles... I didn't know that had that many. Their debut album spent 15 weeks at #1 & 43 weeks in the Top 10! :)
Regarding your question in another post, the throwbacks for the birthdays of each Little Mix member is a great idea! If you want, I can do throwbacks about their UK chart history.

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

yeah when i do these throwbacks, even i get surprised on things i didn't know about. for example, i didn't know the spice girls' 1st album was blocked off the #1 spot for a couple of mos. but as you see, during that time we had other albums that were huge sellers.

well, 15 wks @ #1 and 43 wks in the top 10 is giving the bodyguard soundtrack a run for it's money ;). @ the time, i knew they did great on the charts, but i didn't know they did THAT great :D. i do recall seeing them in the top 10 on both charts for a long time, but never really took any notice :D

avatar

Piran

1

The 'Bodyguard' soundtrack spent 20 weeks at #1 on the BB200 & is certified 17x platinum by the RIAA if I remember correctly. Also, I found out that it sold over 45M worldwide, so there's no surprise that it's the biggest soundtrack globally of all-time! Do you know many weeks it spent in the Top 10 of the BB200 then? :)
After January 1989, soundtracks became ineligible to chart on the main albums chart over here, but it did peak at #1 on the UK Compilations Chart. I think it was also #2 on the 1990s Decade-End BB200 chart! :D
Regarding the Spice Girls, I still really hope Little Mix do a movie one day. ;)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

i believe the bodyguard spent a solid 7+ mos. in the top 10 ;) . it was also the #1 album of the year for the 200 year-end chart...so i'm sure it remained in the top 20, top 30, etc. for a good amt. of time. i just remember everyone noting how even better her singing was and how much everyone loved the movie and album...no joke! anytime an album does that well in america, i can certainly guarantee it was very well liked by just about everyone. or @ least the fans who like that particular genre.

i mean, when all that happened i was already a huge fan of hers :D so i may be biased, but the bodyguard's stats are still impressive in my book...and no internet?? same with thriller...bb kept gloating about how adele's 21 album topped thriller by 1 wk in the top 10...but she had itunes and online advantages he didn't. so, why discount his achievements? he basically did what she did before we even had cds or vh1! his feats are still great too.

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah Billboard do make these strange comparisons sometimes & earlier in the year, they even mentioned about Drake matching a feat set by Michael Jackson (I think it was for consecutive weeks atop the Hot 100 & BB200 simultaneously)... that's so unfair when Drake had streaming & MJ didn't, especially when 'Views' has around half of its US album figures as streaming of the tracks from it. :/
Oh you know what makes Little Mix's recent success even more impressive? 'Get Weird' was only released just over 12 months ago, so for them to release an album about a year after their last one shows how hard they've worked for it. In fact, all four of their studio albums have been released in November! :D
'Glory Days' has also reached the Top 10 in: Australia, Ireland, Netherlands & New Zealand. It's already been certified Silver by the BPI over here in just one week! ;)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

mate...! why do you think i put up the thriller throwbacks on the hot 100 articles back then? ;) with mj, his hot 100 feats were all single record sales *no cassette singles back then from what i remember* and massive radio airplay. with drake, all that was streaming...bb should've put an * next to the sentence 'drake surpassed mj...*' :D believe me, there's no real comparison to drake and mj or any current artist today. that's great whenever someone does well on bb, but to compare them to mj, whitney, the beatles *like bb did with riri and the beatles*...bb should take the time to explain different eras, different chart factors.

plus the momentum he had in 1983 is leagues beyond anyone today or in recent times. if we had cds, itunes, steaming, etc. back then, no doubt thriller would've easily sold 40mill. in the u.s. those 20mill. albums he sold that year was pure sales ;)

and what's a silver certification? well, that's great for lm...how did their other albums do in the uk? they only have 1 certification over here, right? the gold certification for 'wings'?

avatar

Piran

1

Also, did you notice how Billboard almost never stated the pure sales of 'Views'? That's because they were so poor after the 3rd week; I think Joseph said that for this past week, they were less than 5,000! :) LOL
A Silver certification in the UK is 200k copies & if they sold the same amount in the US as they did in the UK this week, 'Glory Days' would be #1 on the BB200 too. Little Mix actually have two RIAA certification for singles, because 'Black Magic' was certified Gold in your country as well as 'Wings'.
In the UK: 'DNA' (#3 peak, platinum), 'Salute' (#4 peak, platinum) & 'Get Weird' (#2 peak, 2x platinum). :D
Oh here are some more stats I found out about Little Mix regarding their YouTube success: they've had 1.425B views if you combine all of their music videos. Their highest is 'Black Magic' currently at 246.257.473, but I have a feeling that SOTME will definitely pass that eventually. ;)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

of course bb won't mention the real sales figures to 'views'...cuz then they'd have to re-write all those mj comparisons. ;).

in 1983, mj was def. selling 1+mill. records and cassette tapes each month! & he only made 3 vids and still achieved 7, that's right!, top 10 hits *he had 3 more as a guest artist: 'somebody's watching me', 'say say say,' & 'state of shock'-pure radio hit!*. too bad bb won't inform us what the true sales to thriller were that year ;). there's just no comparison to the thriller album to any other album even adele's 21 album. i don't care how many wks she or anyone else spent in the top 3 or whatever ;). in america in 1983, EVERYONE had michaelmania fever, everyone thought he was the coolest thing that ever existed. everyone was trying to do the moonwalk, wanted to be just like him, even dressing like him...i still haven't seen any other artist come close to that mass appeal...not even garth brooks ;)

well, that's great that lm has 2 gold certifications over here...i didn't know that. does the uk have diamond certifications like us? and are the spice girls still the biggest selling female group over there?

avatar

Piran

1

Well if we're including featured appearances, then 'Somebody's Watching Me' is one of my favourite MJ songs! I believe Jermaine does the backing vocals in that song as well. :)
Not only are the Spice Girls the biggest selling female group in the UK of all-time, but with 80 million albums sold globally, they are the biggest-selling female group in the world of all-time! :D
No, the UK doesn't have diamond certifications. I think how it works is: 200k (silver), 400k (gold), 600k (platinum), Multiples of 600k (multi-platinum). So if an album were to sell 6M copies in the UK, then it would be certified 10x platinum, but never diamond.
I'm going to sign off for a bit Sunshine Gal, but I'll try to be back on in a couple of hours from now. Chat to you soon & thanks again for the stats about the Spice Girls! ;)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

yeah i gotta grab a bite, well, that's interesting. no wonder uk labels keep trying to make it over here :D. ok, so the spice girls' 1st album is 10x plat. in the uk correct? i forget where i read it, possibly on bb, that they're the only female group to reach 10x plat. with 1 album in the uk?

ok mate, i'll catch ya later ;). and i think you'll like the uk act i picked for next week's throwbacks ;). i found out lots of cool things about this act's bb chart runs :)

avatar

Piran

1

Hey Sunshine Gal! I'm back again. :)
Well that's made me even more excited about your next set of throwbacks. Yeah, 'Spice' is 10x platinum in the UK & no other album is anywhere near close to matching it; the nearest would be The Spice Girls' other album, 'Spiceworld', or All Saint's self-titled album at 5x platinum! :D
'Spice' was also certified 10x platinum in Canada as well & went multi-platinum in 27 countries. ;)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

hey mate!!! well, i gotta cut this short, but i'll be back a lil' later *my dad is stopping by*. all saints...i think i've seen them on the charts doing my throwbacks, are they big in the uk? ok mate, i'll be back within the hr, sorry :D

avatar

Piran

1

Don't worry, I'll try to be back then as well. I've got some more good news to tell you. :)
Yeah, 'All Saints' got 9 Top 10 singles in the UK & 5 of them got to #1! :D
Chat to you again shortly. ;)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

hey mate!! well, i tried going down the stairs and could only make it about 80%, but still! :)))!! this tues. will be 5 wks since my accident and both my dad and i were pleased with results.

well, hurry your *bleep* over here then :D and tell me the good news! well, i don't think i know who the all saints were @ the time they came to america, but i'll pull up their bb chart feats and see how well they did.

avatar

Piran

1

Sorry for the late reply, but I'm back on & will probably be for another 60-90 minutes. :)
Yeah, the only major US chart success that All Saints had was 'Never Ever' peaking at #4 on the Hot 100 back in 1997. It's still good to know that they had a Top 5 single in your country! :D
The good news is that I managed to get 85% in my recent test; it was only practice though, but that still gives me a lot of confidence for when I eventually do the final. ;)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

hey mate!! just reading this article on abcnews about a guy who had no legal driver's license who fled from police and crashed and killed a couple and their baby. but yet, some people are blaming the cop! and yet, there's evidence it took some time for the cop just to see the guy, that's how fast that guy was going and he had past offenses! and yet, you can't just cooperate with the police?

anyhow...the all saints had a top 5 hit?? ok, i'll pull up their song and chart feat and see if i remember it ;). and that's great to know you're doing so good in your studies...see i told you! your schoolwork is most important and when that's done and out of the way, the hobbies are more fun ;)

avatar

Piran

1

So what happened to this guy then & why would people want to blame the cop? :/
Anyway, I did see that All Saints had a Top 5 hit on the Hot 100, but other than 'I Know Where It's At', which peaked at #36 in the US (& #2 in Canada!), I can't find any more songs that charted in your country from them. It seems like they had moderate success across the world overall though. :D
Yeah, I've done seven assignments so far & performed well in all of them apart from one. Your advice definitely worked though, but my Christmas break starts in less than two weeks now, so expect to see a lot more of me soon! ;)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

google 'license-less driver kills 3 people' it happened yesterday or the day before. because he's black and the cop was white :/ there's been a lot of outrage over black suspects getting killed by white cops..while i'm not saying it's right to shoot anyone, but come on! you're running away or fleeing..what is that cop supposed to do? in canada, cops have complete immunity when they're apprehending suspects. in this case, i fully blame the suspect. the cop questioned him in a parking lot and did a routine check and found out he had a suspended license, past drug offenses, a warrant out for his arrest...and the guy had his girlfriend in the car the whole time! she even says he was driving crazy and not even braking!

well, i did listen to the all saints song...i don't remember it. and i pulled up their chart feat when they were @ #4. to be honest, i don't think i was tracking the top 10 that week, bsb would've been @ #34 with 'everybody'...and the other songs i liked back then had fell out of the top 20. but that's great for them! i never heard of them though.

avatar

Piran

1

I saw the ABC News article briefly, so I'll check more of that out in a bit.
Well I've got that chart dated for 08/22/1998 & I don't really remember too much of the Hot 100's Top 10 that week. My favourites would be: Monica & Brandy's 'Boy Is Mine' (#1 that week & 13 weeks atop the chart the US charts in total), Shania Twain's 'You're Still The One' (#6 back then) & Next's 'Too Close' (#9 at that time). :)
Have you done Hot 100 Top 10 throwbacks for each of the birthdays of the Little Mix members yet? I can't remember if you did them on a Hot 100 article or not, but please definitely bring those over here if you did.

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

yeah check out that story...turns out that cop was way behind (he radioed in) the guy and the guy was just whizzing thru intersections @ almost 100 mph! he wasn't even braking, just speeding thru intersections! there were 2 other people injured as well as the family of 3 dying, shows how fast he crashed into that 1st car *family dying* and the other cars. so, now he has tons of charges racking up...but, come on! you chose to do the wrong thing, you gotta accept your punishment.

mate, you were just a wee baby when that top 10 came out :D i wouldn't expect you to remember any of it LOL!! i recall shania and brandy in the top 10, i just don't recall that top 10 in particular.

and yes, i did more throwbacks, but it's all a surprise ;). and yes, i plan to do lm throwbacks on their bdays...you'll just have to wait and see :D

avatar

Piran

1

100mph?? The fastest you can drive on roads in the UK is 70mph! What's the speed limit on freeways in the US then?
Yeah I wasn't even 5 months old for that Top 10, but even today is still listen to some songs there, such as 'You're Still The One' for example. Oh I should probably remind you that the next weekly list we're doing is our favourite Hot 100 #1s of the 2010s.
Oh I'm probably going to sign off in a few minutes. It's great to get all of that work done, but it's made me very tired! I'm still happy that I only have one more homework task to do for this term. ;)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

well, the freeways can vary from 50-75 give or take. but this happened on public roads where the speed limit would be around 35-45. based on the evidence of the cop radioing in and not being able to catch up to him (he was that far ahead of the cop) and the guy's own girlfriend passing out in fear...shows how careless this idiot was. i can't believe anyone would blame the cop in this case...i never have been chased by police LOL! then don't do the wrong thing!

ok mate, i'll go ahead and let you go for now...good night :). talk to you 2mor :P

Yeah, that's so stupid of him & even if this guy didn't drive away, not being licenced is bad enough itself.
I wish I could stay on longer, but I got back very late last night (5am my time!) & that assignment today took about 3 hours to do! LOL
It was great chatting to you again today though. See you tomorrow! :)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

believe me, get your schoolwork done before chatting with me ;) and before partying :D but i'm glad your work is getting done and then you're having more fun chatting.

and yes, that case is very heartbreaking when scared individuals think the public roads are their own domains. and think by driving as fast as possible, they'll 'get away with it.' i don't get why people like that just can't cooperate with the police and make things easier on themselves? ok mate, talk to you 2mor :P

Hey Sunshine Gal! I hope you're having a great morning. :)
So are you excited for the next BB200 article? I don't think Billboard will tell us where 'Glory Days' will debut tonight, but I'll definitely keep you updated when the full charts update on Tuesday. :D
I've got my lists & polls ready for later as well. Are you going to be on then? ;)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

*sorry mate, my powerball tic didn't do **** LOL! i forgot to send out this post* hey mate, good morning! oh did you see someone posting a 'get rich' post under my posts to you? can you help me flag them?

well, if lm won't be in the top 10 then i don't think bb will mention them, but they somtimes mention anything interesting going on outside the top 10. and yeah i should be on later...well, today's our official first cold day here in tucson :D

avatar

Piran

1

There you are! I was wondering if you were still on, so I did post to you over on Billboard. There's actually some good news I just found out about Little Mix's album & I also gave you an update for what should be happening at the top of the BB200 later. :)
Yeah, those spam posts appear in the replies to most articles, but I usually ignore them. I've reported the comment you wanted me to though.
Well what is the temperature in Tucson at the moment? It's probably something that we wouldn't consider cold in the UK! LOL

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

yeah, the powerball jkpot was pretty big and some fool won it all LOL! yeah i blocked that user, thanks for helping to report them. it's 52* right now and the high will be around 60*...so much for 115* :D so what was that bb article you told me about? i'll hop over to bb and check it out ;).

avatar

Piran

1

How much was the prize then? I remember you telling me the East Coast are more lucky at winning. :) LOL
Haha well 52* is cold for a desert during the day, but over here that's not too bad. 60* is actually quite warm over here, especially for this time of year! :D
The article wasn't from Billboard, but from another website called HDD that posts BB200 predictions each Friday. They are usually quite accurate though! ;)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

it was $421 mill.!! and yeah, the east coast tends to be luckier than my area LOL! one time an elderly woman did win the jkpot here in arizona *i think in phoenix*, but i wanted the smaller prizes...you know $2mill. LOL! $100k...either will do ;)

so, what's the high over there? and did zayn ever get another hit in the uk? is he a big solo artist over there?

avatar

Piran

1

Well the average maximum you would get in the UK Lotto is about £5.5M ($6.9M), but in Europe's EuroMillions, it's usually £40M ($50M). It varies a lot each week though, but it sounds like the US have much bigger cash prizes! :)
Regarding Zayn, after the #1 debut he had with 'Pillowtalk', he hasn't done amazingly well in the UK charts to be honest. I think 'Cruel' & 'Like I Would' made the lower Top 40, but they didn't stay around for more than about a month.

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

well, any millions sounds good to me ;D so, is zayn a 1 hit wonder over there too? i hope he realizes, if he can't make his label any money, he may be dropped :/ over here, that's what happens...the label invests a lot of money in you and if the 'return' isn't enough to cover all that and is very low...labels can drop the artists just like that! do you think that'll happen to him? and how's his anxiety? is he still cancelling appearances? cuz that's not good either.

avatar

Piran

1

Well Zayn is a one-hit wonder as a solo artist over here at the moment unfortunately. I haven't heard anything more about his anxiety yet, but I definitely agree that he may be dropped if he keeps having to pull out of live performances. :/
Like I said before though, we'll need to wait to see how successful the second album though. I just think that if it doesn't get enough promotion or there's no live appearances, it's going to flop & that would be a shame. -_-
Speaking of one-hit wonders, did Jstar ever do a list theme for that? I'm going to be doing favourite Hot 100 #1s of the 2010s tomorrow & then favourite Christmas songs for next week. :)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

he's doing a 2nd album?? hmm...i mean, i'm not hating on zayn, but did he honestly expect to be a big solo success just because he came from a group? but yeah, if he can't do his performances then promoters will want their money back and his label may consider dropping him. but that's crazy that a 2nd album may be in the works and his debut album came out not even a yr ago. and not just on performances, low sales will make any label drop an artist. he should just come back to the group ;)

what about niall? is he starting to become a big solo act? see over here, it don't matter how good you are, it matters how much people like you ;). our 1D mates were just bad @ public relations, there's no other way to put it. ok mate those list ideas sound good and yes i think we did a one hit wonder list, but we can always do that one again ;) ok mate, i'll be back shortly.

avatar

Piran

1

Well there's been no confirmation that Zayn is doing a second album, but I was just saying that if he does, it will be interesting to see how it performs compared to 'Mind Of Mine'. Niall Horan's 'This Town' peaked at #9 & lasted just one week in the Top 10 over here. You'll be pleased to know that the latter artist is currently in the Top 10 of the US iTunes chart right now though.
Chat to you again later! :)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

any news on our other mates' solo endeavors? harry is def. gonna be a solo act right? and liam too? well, i certainly do wish all of them the best...think the both of them will make it?

avatar

Piran

0

I've not heard anything about them releasing new music, but they could have solo careers in another industry. I honestly thought Harry would be the first member to release a hit single & album though.
If they do release music, I don't really know it'll perform, but I expect both could end up with at least a Top 10 in the UK & a Top 40 on the Hot 100. What do you think? :)

avatar

etin

1

Too pity that "who do u think u r " wasnt release in us.

avatar

Sunshine Gal

0

if it was, i honestly don't remember it. but they certainly had an incredible run on the bb charts their first year. and i'll have some more throwbacks this frid. on another uk act ;) be sure to tell me what you think of them :P

avatar

etin

0

actually they released spice up your life immediately. if they had been released 4th single, their debut could go more than x7 platinums

avatar

Sunshine Gal

0

well, their debut album actually went 7.5x plat. over here...but i feel that their label released their 2nd album and the 2nd albums' singles too soon. but on the official singles article today, i'll have more throwbacks on another uk artist that came to the u.s. ;).

avatar

etin

1

i recommend eternal and gabrielle.. they have little success in us, even gabrielle has a grammy

avatar

Sunshine Gal

0

hmm...never heard of them mate...i'll check 'em out :). there's actually quite a few uk acts on the charts that i've never heard or it's been a long while since they were over here. like rick astley, he had 1 big hit *never gonna give you up* in america in the 80s and i haven't heard anything from him since.

avatar

etin

1

There a lot of uk acts in 90s in us . Some of them found a success in other charts like alternative/dance club play

avatar

Sunshine Gal

0

i only know of a select few: emf, spice girls, coldplay...i'd have to double check the bb charts. cuz in the 90s, u.s. acts and also canadian artists like celine dion and alanis morrisette did pretty well. which uk acts are you talking about?

avatar

etin

1

Portishead, samantha mumba (i dont mind year of her) ,s club 7, shakespear's sister, bbmak, mark morrison, olive, travis, blur, Jimmy ray, katrina & the waves, Mike and the mechanics, the verve, dirty Vegas, the prodigy, Katrina Wheel, chumbawamba, the charlatans uk,simply red, lightningseeds, rights said fred, soul ii soul, brand new heavies, 5ive, take that, proclaimers, edwyn collins, morrissey , nicki french, everything but the girl, erasure, duran duran, westlife, sneaker pimps, cleopatra, Moby, omd, pet shop boys, def leppard, sade , chemical brothers... Miss teeq, Miss dynamite, all saints, joss Stone, James blunt,

avatar

Sunshine Gal

0

a lot of these acts i really don't know too much about...duran duran and def leppard did well in the mid-80s to late 80s. i do remember joss stone, cleopatra...def. remember right said fred. bbmak, westlife and take that each notched a top 20 hit *take that hit the top 10 over here*, but the rest it's been awhile or i've never heard of them before.

i didn't really follow the sub-charts in the 90s *even today* the hot 100 singles chart was always my fave and still is today. if these acts didn't do too well on the hot 100, then i wouldn't know too much about them. but thanks for telling me ;)

avatar

etin

1

i am sure you heard return of the mack, tubthumbing and missing if you are over 25

avatar

Sunshine Gal

0

sorry mate, i'd have to re-listen to their music to see if any rings a bell. if those acts didn't peak within the top 20 on the hot 100, i wouldn't know who they were offhand. any u.s. artists you're a fan of?

avatar

etin

1

They peaked top 20..
Yes there are many singers i like but i cant stand today's popstars

avatar

Sunshine Gal

0

who are some of the american acts you like? well, keep in mind that 20+ yrs ago, no internet over here, so i'd be following the hot 100 via the physical mag. unless that uk act had a big hit, i prob. won't remember them or it'll take me a min. or 2 :D. i do recall westlife's and bbmaks' songs back then...but bad timing for them to come over here...the american artists dominated the charts and sales during that year *2000*.

avatar

etin

1

Actually us radios rejected to play westlife's world of our own when they learned they arent American.

My favourite American acts: babyface, jody watley, shania Twain, faith hill, Lisa loeb, matt kearney, matt nathanson, blind pilot, anberlin, whitney, leann rhymes, gwen stefunny, rob thomas, janet, cher, tlc, jojo, atlas genius, peabo bryson etc..

avatar

Sunshine Gal

0

are you sure about that mate? cuz shania twain and celine dion are canadian and they both did great on the hot 100. shania even debuted @ #5 with 'from this moment on' *or somewhere around there* and celine debuted @ #1 with 'my heart will go on' and this was all before westlife came to the u.s.

my thoughts on all that, westlife's single came right in the middle of nsync's momentum of their 'no strings attached' album...and britney and eminem's albums also came out right around the time westlife's single was over here. both britney and em's lead singles 'oops..' and 'the real slim shady' peaked within the top 10. but both albums had those huge 1st week sales.

so, looking back on that today, i don't feel it's because westlife was an international act *we've had plenty of non-u.s. acts do great over here* i feel it was very bad timing on the part of westlife's label. their label was obviously dazzled by all the huge sales :D should've held off until nsync's momentum cooled off and had westlife go on tour with them or bsb. take a look @ the hot 100's top 10 during the week westlife peaked @ #20...i did do some westlife throwbacks a couple wks ago on the official singles article and gave my thoughts on all that.

avatar

etin

1

Their us label was arista. They performed this song in arista's 40th year night... there were 98 degrees, lfo, o town, 5ive, souldecision that time , maybe us saturated to boybands

avatar

Sunshine Gal

0

it's too bad westlife's and bbmak's label didn't think to have either group *or both* go on tour with nsync the previous year...nsync had a sold-out stadium only tour here in the states...that's right! stadiums only! anyway, nothing we can do about it now...but too bad i wasn't creative consultant to them or something :D. but yeah, i have to say it was bad timing, nothing more than that. but good for both groups getting a top 20 hit over here :). do you like both groups?

avatar

etin

0

bbmak yes, but westlife not; they are imitation of boyzone

avatar

Sunshine Gal

0

westlife is pretty good mate! what's your thoughts when uk acts do well here in the states?

avatar

etin

0

interesting and very successful, because it was very hard to Enter hot 100 for european acts in 90s

Congratulations to: Clean Bandit, Sean Paul & Anne-Marie for a 3rd week at #1 with 'Rockabye', which continues to grow on me with every listen. It was close between Clean Bandit & Rae Sremmurd all week in streaming, but the former has a big enough sales lead to stay at the top of the overall charts. I'm not sure if 'Black Beatles' will go to #1 yet, but I certainly wouldn't mind if it does. I think the Top 2 might stay this way for a little while yet. :)
The rest of the Top 10 remains stagnant again, but it's awesome to see Maroon 5 climb again this week. There were some good debuts from The Weeknd this week, but I'm surprised (but happy) that 'All Night' returned to the Top 40, although it has had a very strange chart run. The Tom Zanetti & John Legend songs also entering the Top 40 aren't bad, but I don't love them. It's also great news that 'Glory Days' became Little Mix's first UK #1 album today as well. :D
It's a shame to see Nathan Sykes out of the Top 40 after just one week & that Robbie Williams took a big fall as well. I wish Craig David could've entered the Top 40 this week though.
Not a bad week overall, but there was very little action. Thanks for reading this everyone & have a nice weekend. ;)

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

hey mate!! didn't know nathan sykes was on the uk chart last week...which # was he? is be a big solo artist in the uk?

avatar

Piran

1

Hey Sunshine Gal! :)
Nathan Sykes was at #28 last week, but dropped to #41 today. Yeah, he has had quite a successful solo career in the UK so far. 'Famous' climbed into the Top 40 last week following his X Factor performance.

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

so the uk albums chart is pure sales? cuz elvis is still in the top 10!! over here, i haven't seen him in the top 10 for quite some time! his last #1 album was the #1's collection that entered @ #1. ok mate, time for my throwbacks ;)

avatar

Piran

1

well the UK albums chart does include streaming data, but it's great to still see Elvis in the Top 10 on the albums chart. :)
I look forward to seeing which artist you're going to do throwbacks for. Have you seen the Little Mix article on this website yet then?

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

ok mate, i'm gonna be doing throwbacks to the spice girls' ;) first 2 albums and batch of singles...pls. give me a few min. in between each throwback because i'm always editing the stats and such. i have 1 throwback up already and i believe i did skim thru the lm article...was it about them having the #1 album of the week?

avatar

Mark Willmott

Craig David is number 8 on sales alone yet not in top 40 overall. The trouble with streaming unfortunately

avatar

Ebony

1

It's because he has an older fan base. A few weeks ago in Australia guy Sebastian lead sales for a week and only rose 4 places

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, that's the only major problem I have with streaming; older artists are at a disadvantage there, which is also why 'Love My Life' by Robbie Williams sadly dropped out of the Top 40 after just one week. :/

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

1

Nathan Sykes only really has one successful song, Over and Over Again on his own. The rest either never hit very high or came and passed in the top 40 in one week

avatar

Piran

0

Unfortunately he's another example of an artist that is at a disadvantage from streaming. I'm sure I've seen: 'Over & Over Again', 'Kiss Me Quick' & 'Famous' all make the Top 10 on the iTunes chart. At least Nathan Sykes generally has decent sales though.

So earlier I was listening to Black Beatles (foreshadowing) and I got nostalgic, so I decided to look at old charts, and give my opinions on all of these songs. :)

I quite like Rockabye, especially Sean Paul’s part, but they have made better music (like Rather Be and Tick Tock), and I prefer some other songs around the same position.

I absolutely agree on Black Beatles, definitely the best hit song of the year in 2016, and it’s not really that close.

I definitely do not agree on Maroon 5 climbing being a good thing, but at least this one had Kendrick Lamar on it. :|

I agree on everything else though (especially on The Weeknd’s debuts being good) except for Glory Days, really not a fan of that album.

Also weird to see some legacy acts expected to be in the Top 40 though.

In terms of the review itself, this is definitely my favourite format you’ve ever done, although they’ve all been great.

TOP 10 RANKINGS:

1: Rockabye (7/10)
2: Black Beatles (11/10)
3: Shout Out To My Ex (0/10)
4: Say You Won’t Let Go (3/10)
5: Don’t Wanna Know (5/10)
6: 24K Magic (8/10)
7: Sexual (8/10)
8: Starboy (10/10)
9: Closer (3/10)
10: Starving (7/10)

BEST SONG: Black Beatles
WORST SONG: Shout Out To My Ex
PERCENT: 62%

Definitely gonna check out a few more reviews, definitely the week where Ye came out, and probably one from some time in 2019.

'Black Beatles' was almost a #1 on my personal charts actually! One of the best recent hits to come out of a "challenge" for sure, especially since I normally don't care that much for Rae Sremmurd at all.

Everyone seems to hate 'Shout Out To My Ex', don't they? It didn't age well for me, but I still don't get the insane dislike that it gets on OCC, haha. 'Closer' would be way higher for me though, while 'Don't Wanna Know' would be a bit lower!

Congratulations to Clean Bandit on making it 3 weeks at number 1 with Rockabye! Still sounding great but good to see they were almost knocked off by Black Beatles which i really like and have a feeling it could make it to number 1 next week! Good to see Maroon 5 hit the top 5 with don`t wanna know also.
Shame Drake could not return to the top 10 with Fake love. it`s my favorite song right now, really catchy.
Not much movement in the chart this week. Happy the Mack is climbing as im really getting into that song. Also very happy to see 2 new Weeknd tracks in the top 40! Party Monster im getting into and his new one with Daft Punk debuting at 18 is an instant hit on me and has a daft punk vibe which is never a bad thing! Overall a slow week on the chart not much movement, hopefully more changes next week.
