If you compare James Arthur's song to Sia's for example, I think James' is much better, given that it has so different lyrics, even in all its choruses. In Sia's song, nearly every line ends with "stamina", that's lame.

There is a song that sounds like R Kellys Turn back the hands of time about someone loving you because you are famous.Does anyone know what it is and who sings it? It is a new release i heard on the radio but they never said who it was.😥

You get a few arists who stand the test of time like Bob Marley most of the rest of it iss juss rubbish.

The Pretty Reckless - Take me Down. Number 1 prediction.

As much as I like a lot of this year's Dance tracks I will be glad when the tropical house influence lessens and we get tracks that actually sound different rather than every Dance song having that same sound. Also, James Arthur has obviously been listening to a lot of Ed Sheeran tracks as his song is very very Sheeran-esque but just not so good .
It seems that there are two main song types doing well in the past 12 months : bloke with guitar or anything that has that major lazer/kygo tropical house sound. Soooooo boring.

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

0

Major Lazer is not tropical house, it's just that Cold Water has a very generic beat. But I do agree that same-sounding tropical house is getting overused, but I'd choose that over mainstream Philip George-like stuff

Oh... just realised Don't Need No Money went out. It was a great song which deserved a top 40 place for sure- such a dancey, poppy banger.

Pretty happy about this weeks chart. I don't mind James Arthur being no.1; his new song is pretty good, although Closer is better. However I'm happy something new is at no.1 as if a song gets over 4 or 5 weeks it would give me scary flashbacks of One Dance- I don't want that to happen again.
Good to see Side To Side, The Greatest and In The Name of Love hold on to top 10 spots, and I really like Starboy so I'm glad to see it become The Weeknd's 3rd top 3 single. It is one of few recent songs which was instantly popular in both streaming and downloads, which is why it is one of very few songs (Cant stop the feeling, This is what you came for, Cold Water, Let Me Love You) which have entered straight into the top 3 recently. I'm quite sure This Town will enter that group next week, although I'm not completely sure on it myself yet.
There's a lot of other big releases next week too, including Craig David, DNCE, Galantis and another Chainsmokers song. I'm surprised Meteorite and Cancer failed, but most of those should be hits.
Great to see the likes of Ain't My Fault, Starving, Blow Your Mind (Mwah) and Let Me Hold You (Turn Me On) climbing, although the latter should really be higher by now.
It's annoying that Toothbrush continues to fail to reach the top 40, although it's peaked at no.26 in downloads. Streaming has too big an influence these days. This reminds me of I Know What You Did Last Summer, which got to like 20 in downloads but only 42 overall, which was annoying. Yet it still has almost 200 million Spotify plays which is a LOT. Weird. Also there's been songs like Levels and Zero in 2015 which failed to get in the top 40 due to streaming. They should definitely make it a bit fairer so they both have as much difference on the overall chart.
Looking through the latter stages of the top 100, there are SO many old songs! There are 4 songs which have had over 100 weeks, and one from 2004!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was 2 then! How do people still buy songs which are 12 years old? I looked at it (Mr Brightside btw)'s chart run and it only got to no.10 and spent just 6 weeks in the top 40! WTF???

I Like so much the official chart , but I need to say is very bad don't give a recognition for the single Come With Us by Sophie Ellis Bextor . When this song having the support of the BBC Radio 2 and was supported with remixes done by Freemasons !
For me is difficult understand because Sophie not have a support in your own country , meanwhile in Russia she continued being strong !

C

chartwatcher

0

You need radio one airplay to make any impact on the charts.

JA

Javier Alvarado

0

I thinks not is necessary but is the problem because many singers in UK releasing your albums in other countries , don't have the enough support for the mains radios there !

C

chartwatcher

1

You see here not sure why it is always radio one, I think they have always been known for new music and they have a younger audience and are more popular, she has faded here because of her age now and because she had her days of fame fourteen years ago, radio one want new artist's while radio two still give airplay to established musicians who have passed their day, older musicians aim more of their music at foreign markets because their songs sell better their ,but in the UK where they are no longer popular in the moment like new younger artists sales for singles can be average, hope this gives you the answer that you were looking for to see why.

C

chartwatcher

5

Great entry 'Starboy' great song, really atmospheric and thrilling and quite dark for a pop single, Niall's new song will jump like a kangaroo on next week's issue, it got released on the 29th so it has charted on one days sale's at 100, and considering it has had no promotion due to Niall's decision not to announce it or tell about it that is impressive, especially so that it is 25 in the sales, goes to show how much steaming runs this chart, Ellie moving up a place should continue to rise due to the film, Olly and his single falling though could rise but his second single is due soon, 'My Way' up a place and holding should go further up, a vast large amount of shockingly low entries still.

R

riley

2

Agree with you on Starboy!

C

chartwatcher

1

Cool, their are a lot of low entries though only that song made the top ten, we have gone back to the eighties where everything has to climb from a low debut.

R

riley

1

well i think next week, niall and the chainsmokers will hit the top 10 with there new ones. possibly ellie as well. dont complain tho, recently we have had alot more movement than what happened in summer haha.

Oh god...Broccoli has entered.

Pekka Sahlberg

If you´re just looking at the PHYSICAL chart, you know the time before any downloading, streaming . The time people had to BUY their music they wanted to listen to so it seems to me that PET SHOP BOYS are still very much live and kicking. That was the time charts really counted for something. At least I think so. U may disagree.

avatar

Daniel Ayquero

-1

I know what you mean. It seems the days of paid music dominating the charts are almost over. 84-85% singles in the UK are streamed. Nowadays free music is the major component of most charts and anyone can contribute to this formula. In a way it's more democratic because you don't need money to influence the charts (I'm not saying I'm excited about it, though). On the other hand I wonder how much money 'free' music actually makes for the record companies and artists.
What's a bit sad for older fans of the charts is that we will have to get used to big names no longer charting in the singles chart, hit albums without hit singles, hit singles without hit albums and empty boxes in wiki discographies (gets me angry every time...).

C

chartwatcher

1

Well said it is a shame but you can't change it so just find the good in it.

avatar

This chart, No Robbie Williams. Sales chart, Robbie at nro 75. It seems that all these big names don´t make it anymore. It makes me feel that if someone is out of mind out of sight for like 2 years so they have lost the game for good. Britney, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Robbie Williams. No chance. It seems you have to be available 24/7 day in day out all year round. Even if the 24/7 availability has nothing to do with music. It is SO sad!

avatar

PeteFromLeeds

Robbie's song was a grat and it was released halfway through the week. His real single will be in the Top 100 next week.

C

Not bothered about female musician's to be honest, but yeah agreed about Olly Murs he just has to perform it on x factor, it climbed from 19 to 15 when he performed it on strictly come dancing so.

2

Kinda impressed this week as there is more than 5 new entries this week and the highest being Starboy at 3 and right now I love it considering it's pretty weak compared to can't feel my face but by then time it gets to around 200,000 sales it'll feeel like a hiiitttt!! Also impressed In the Name of Love is climbing mor into the top 10 sub a shame to see you don't know love to drop lower and lower as it never reached the position it rightfully deserved :( however Say you won't let go is a pretty excellent song and so is closer but I'm quite glad to see a new number one!! People need to keep up with the times and stop complaining for example "Terrible closer finally dropped off the chart finally however been replaced with new rubbish hasn't been a decent number 1 since 2000" seriously get a life and keep up

C

chartwatcher

1

It has nothing to do with not having a life everyone is entitled to have an opinion and guessing by the attitude in your typing I am guessing you are a woman. I agree about Olly Murs though, that person thinks different keep up with the times! keep up with times! what illogical rubbish you do speak.

G

Gail

0

I'm so sorry you feel this way however I didn't mean any offense to anyone you are right everyone has an opinion but it's 2016 and I'm older than most people here and In hoping that the charts will become "normal" again too but I'm not going to keep going on about it, thanks for the feedback, love

C

chartwatcher

0

You are judging people for thinking different or having an opinion, people have good reason to say these things as you just said quite contradictory to your first statement they are not what they were and people can be passionate, thanks for the apology and no worries I like giving feedback, pleasure is mine.

avatar

Ricci Tambor

2

You have to give James Arthur credit for this most unlikely comeback, I thought he had been consigned to the x factor rejects history books alongside Steve brookstein and Matt cardle but no, out of nowhere he's got a number 1 hit on his hands! Crazy. Glad a non dance act is number 1 for a change tbh, but I don't really see what all the fuss is about - it's nothing special. Next week I expect 1D fans will guarantee Niall Horan a top 3 with This Town, possibly the top spot?

C

If Olly Murs 'You Don't Know Love' hit the top spot then we'd have a good number one, a great piece of moody modern melancholy, a criminally underrated track if not the most overlooked injusticed song this year.

thanks but don`t worry it was a joke haha

i am being sarcasticdont worry mate haha. although i disagree that there aint been a good number 1 since 2009 as we have had some good ones this year

Shut up please

avatar

Calum Pk7

1

I definitely disagree with him but actually this year has been pretty bad for no.1s, it's basically been Drake and Bieber since November with 7 Years and I Took A Pill In Ibiza too. Say You do would've been a great no.1 but it failed. Guess why? Because of streaming. A common story- even JT, Calvin and Rihanna failed due to it.

R

riley

0

Each to there own opinion. It would of been nice to see Calvin, Rihanna and JT at number 1 as they were definatley number 1 hits and im sure they will be in the top 10 comes chart of the year. One song you didnt mention that i would of loved to see at number 1 was This Girl by Kungs. My favorite song of the year, that deserved number 1

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

0

The actual songs that have hit number 1 haven't been bad, 7 Years and Pillowtalk aside - it's just the number 1 duration they have, PillowTalk aside once again

Say You Do was one of my faves of 2016 that deserved no.1 but failed too.

Good to see Closer is finally dethroned, but i wish it was someone less odious than James Arthur.

SH

I'd honestly rather have Closer stay at #1 for another week than have James Arthur dethrone it.But hey, if "SYWLG" starts descending next week and the new released don't sell as much, then "Closer" will probably return to the top spot.

R

riley

4

Not really a fan of his new song but well done to James Arthur on number 1. Also really happy to see the Weeknd chart so highly as staroby as is just a banger! Good to see Calvin Harris and martin garrix climbing aswelll. A slow week overall but not the worse :) Predicting Niall Horans new one to be a massive number 1 challenger next week

avatar

Painmix King

1

Yes, pretty ridiculous really. Niall Horan @ No.100 in the official chart, yet No.25 in the Sales Chart

R

true, but i remember a few weeks ago sia released her new song on a tuesday and it only entered at 50 or something like taht

Oh my god that new Niall song is so boring.

C

chartwatcher

1

He took the Ed Sheeran approach with shuttle acoustic production playing safe.

C

chartwatcher

2

It was only released on the 29th so it charted on a day of sales it will jump like an Irish rabbit next week.

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

1

But nobody can pull it off like Sheeran. As if 1D wasn't bad enough collectively, the members are producing awful solo work

C

chartwatcher

3

Zayn was good in my opinion with mature r n b but he is looking to be a both sides one hit wonder, and I think it is okay, but yeah a lot of then will jump on that production band wagon.

R

riley

2

yea its so bad ant it haha

avatar

Painmix King

0

What has that got to do with the big gap in chart positions. No.25 in the Sales Chart. They both count from the same date

C

chartwatcher

1

It is why it is only one hundred in this chart, but I agree that is a pretty ridiculous gap, I misread what you put slightly I thought you was emphasising the entry placing and not the gap.

avatar

Piran

5

Congratulations to James Arthur as 'Say You Won't Let Go' becomes his 2nd UK #1 single. I know he's still one of those artists that you either love or hate, but I think his new song is amazing & reminds me a lot of 'Thinking Out Loud', so I'm glad it's at the top! :)
Also great to see The Weeknd debut at #3 with 'Starboy' (interestingly it's the 3rd time he's reached #3 on the Official Singles Chart, as 'Can't Feel My Face' & 'The Hills' also did the same in 2015). 'Starboy' is definitely my favourite of his songs though!
'Closer' is also good, but I'm starting to get tired of it now, but 4 weeks atop the charts is still a very impressive chart run. Even though they were only very slight climbs, my favourite rises in the Top 40 are: 'Starving', 'Blow Your Mind [Mwah]', 'False Alarm' & 'Ain't My Fault'. Finally, I'm happy for Passenger, who enters at #1 on the albums chart.
This has been a very good week overall, but I wish 'Still Falling For You' would hit the Top 10.

R

riley

2

Im sure if it carries on with the sales, still falling for you will hit the top 10 Piran dont worry. Its edging closer to it

avatar

Piran

2

Hey Riley! I hope you've had a good week. :)
Well that would be awesome if it can reach the Top 10! So have you heard 'This Town' by Niall Horan & if so, what do you think of it? The Chainsmokers also released another song called 'All We Know' today (which I love), but I don't see 'Closer' going back to #1 now. Do you think 'Starboy' can go even higher than #3 then?

R

riley

3

I have had a great week thanks, you? :)
I would not mind Ellie reaching the top 10, Still falling for you isn't her best but i do like it. I`ve heard Niall`s new song once and im not sure on it yet. The Chainsmokers new one is ok but i defiantly think it will grow on me. I agree that Closer will not go back to number 1 but i think it will stay in the top 5 for a while yet. And no i think Starboy will not go any higher than #3 unless Nialls new song flops but i think it will stay high for awhile

avatar

Piran

3

Yeah, my week has been awesome thanks! :)
Well 'Still Falling For You' is my favourite song right now, but I agree that she's released better ones like: 'Burn', 'Love Me Like You Do' & the 'Your Song' cover. Her vocals have also been amazing on the Calvin Harris hits, 'I Need Your Love' & 'Outside'. :D
So who are your favourite artists at the moment then? Mine are: Taylor Swift, The Chainsmokers, Hailee Steinfeld & Justin Bieber. ;)

R

riley

4

I quite liked on my mind by ellie as well. My favourite artists right now are similar to yours, The Chainsmokers, Bieber, Cheat codes, Martin Garrix im loving. Sia and Ariana Im also still in love with. I like Hailee Steinfeld like you but like Kungs, there not a favorite artist of mine as i only like one song of theirs each. And Calvin Harris new one is becoming a favorite quickly. Also Major Lazer, Drake, Chainsmokers and DJ Snake have been my favourite artists of the year so far as i think they have released brilliant songs, especially major lazer as Light it up is properly my favorite song of the year.

What are your predictions for next weeks chart?? Do you think James Arthur will be number 1 again? I do. but i think Niall`s new single will run it close. I also really hope Galantis chart high with there new single as i think its such a fun party anthem, heard it loads whilst out tonight, I think the Chainsmokers will chart high again but im undecided on that one as of yet.

avatar

Piran

2

You have very good taste in music from 2016 & it looks like you are a fan of dance music this year like myself! ;)
One other new artist I didn't mention who I really like is Zara Larsson & I loved Jess Glynne's debut album & also her other collaborations. :D
I think James Arthur will get another week at #1, because Niall Horan's 'This Town' now seems to be stationary on iTunes updates from Kworb, with about 80% of the sales of 'Say You Won't Let Go' at this moment. 'Starboy' is also doing very well, but it's still quite unlikely to go to #1 next Friday & other than that, nothing else seems remotely close to challenging James Arthur right now.
Galantis should be able to debut in the Top 40 if streaming is on their side (which it usually is), but I'm not expecting a massive entry for them... maybe it could climb into the Top 20 after a few weeks, but it's far too early to say whether or not it could go Top 10 yet. The Chainsmokers' newest release will probably debut higher than that for next week though, probably somewhere in the 11-20 range. So these are very early predictions for the Top 5, but I'll try to update you at the start of next week, so given that Niall's new song doesn't flop, I'd say: 'Say You Won't Let Go' (#1), 'This Town' (#2), 'Closer' (#3), 'Starboy' (#4) & 'My Way' (#5). :)

R

riley

2

I'd say that prediction is realistic. Although I feel Town will debut at #4 instead of #2. I completely forgot about Zara haha, Never Forget You is my favourite song from her. Galantis could be a steady climber because if I remember right, it took No Money a good few weeks before heading into the top 10.

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah 'This Town' is falling very fast in sales on iTunes & streaming seems to be having a slow start for it (but I expect it to rise in the latter over the next few days). Remember how much everyone overestimated the performance of 'Perfect Illusion' when it was first released?
Yeah 'Love On Me' should have a similar chart run to what 'No Money' did, but Galantis' newest release should peak a bit lower.
'Lush Life' is my favourite from her, but 'Girls Like' & 'Never Forget You' were amazing & it was great to see them all reach the Top 5! 'Ain't My Fault' is also awesome, but I also love 'Uncover', which is a ballad that went Top 10 in a few European countries, but was never a big hit over here. Have you heard her discography before 'Never Forget You' then? :)

R

riley

1

I have not, i will need to see it. Im looking forward to her album when it gets revealed.

avatar

Piran

0

I'm looking forward to when she officially announces & releases her next album! :)
So what are your most & least favourite songs of 2016 so far then?

R

riley

1

My favorite songs this year are
Closer
One Dance
Don`t let me down
Cant stop the feeling
This Girl
Cold Water
Let Me Love You
Millionaire
Fast Car
Light it up
I took a pill in ibiza
Into You
Too Good

Roses
Perfect strangers
Sucker for pain
Into You
Don`t really like Hymn for the weekend or James Authur new one.
What about you?

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

1

I hope Ellie Goulding does not hit the top 10. The fact Side To Side managed it but not You Don't Know Love or Sucker For Pain is a kick in the teeth on its own, but Ellie's new bland generic song doing the same would be a nutshot.

C

chartwatcher

0

James has huge competition for next week question now is will at be a pyrrhic victory for him, if he loses it next week he will have the shortest running number one this year, then again it'd be some movement in the number one spot so good for the chart, well better start putting your siege works up Jimmy boy.

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah I think I already knew that you don't like 'Still Falling For You', but I agree with you that 'You Don't Know Love' should definitely have gone Top 10.

avatar

Piran

0

Zayn's 'Pillowtalk' also ended up with just 1 week at #1, but at least British talent is back atop our own charts. :)
I would still say that James Arthur will easily get the #1 next week though, because 'Say You Won't Let Go' has had twice the sales of both 'Starboy' & 'Closer' (so the slight streaming disadvantage against 'Closer' shouldn't be a problem). Right now I think Niall Horan will probably debut in the lower Top 10... sales for 'This Town' have been falling fast all week & streaming isn't exactly great for it.

C

chartwatcher

1

Oh yeah forgot about that, it'd still be the lowest selling though probably cos Zayn's song was released earlier in the year, but that is not important he still got it I guess and I have a feeling it will hold next week too, but it does have some tough competition for sure, can I ask how you keep track of the streaming progress of 'This Town' please? Website or? And I was sure Niall's song was only released on the 29th so it has only charted on a day of selling thanks. :)

avatar

Piran

0

Maybe, but James Arthur is also doing great on sales right now & nothing is remotely close to catching him on that metric. I use iTunes (Kworb) to check this, because as we know, a lot of purchases are made digitally rather than physically these days. Spotify is the main factor affecting streaming, so I nearly always refer to that, but I sometimes look at Apple & YouTube (though I'm not sure if the latter of these counts towards the UK charts... but it does for the US ones). :)
Yeah 'This Town' was released on the Thursday, so for it to debut at #25 on sales in just a few hours is still very impressive, but #100 on the official charts shows how much streaming influences the chart.
So what are your thoughts on streaming affecting the charts? I know a lot of people who comment on here are strongly against it.

C

chartwatcher

3

Thanks for the useful information, and I think a sale should be a sale not if something is played a hundred times, the reason streaming is so popular is because people will take the free option instead of paying for something, musician's still get money all the same from the sites, but streaming was just made so companies like Spotify can get vast of amounts of money from the music industry, it was made so businessmen from those companies could be financially benefited not made to benefit the artist any financially, and the huge irony is they take so much money playing something because people do not want to pay for a song, only the public and company take the benefit really, these sites are ran by money makers not music lovers sadly, I have accepted streaming because I have had no choice but I prefered the traditional way for the reason's above, I love the industry and new artist's, just not this new pointless system set up to benefit these ever increasing music site companies.

Ricci Tambor

3

Ellie Goulding latest single - very average track, nowhere near stuff like Burn and Anything Can Happen.

avatar

Piran

0

Sorry I didn't see this post of yours sooner buddy! :)
Anyway for me, the best songs this year include: 'Fast Car', 'Lush Life', 'Can't Stop The Feeling', 'Closer', 'Faded', 'This One's For You', 'Panda', 'I Took A Pill In Ibiza', 'Starving' & 'Hands To Myself'. Least favourites from 2016 have probably been 'Needed Me' & 'Broccoli' (you might not have heard of these, but they have been Top 10 hits in the US).

Couldn't agree more with you about Ellie Gouldings track, it is one of her weakest singles in years.

IMO she was good until Love Me Like You Do, it went wrong after that. She had a couple of older bland songs but overall she was good
