I remember when chart hits didn't have "ft" in the credit.

In the album chart we see Rick Astley and Paul Simon with recent no1's
It seems that this reflects the true value of artists. So if children continually keep streaming drake just because he is so current and cool will it be no1 for ever. I'm pleased Billie ray Martin is currently at no 15 in the US with her new single, no hope for any UK placing

Why not change the way you quantify streams. Like make the number of new streamers of a track per week to be equivalent to sales units

R

RIME

Nobody collects that data though. Neither Nielsen or the services.

I have to make this point every week. I totally agree with everyone complaining about how boring the charts are these days and they should eliminate streaming. The fact of the matter is that if you look closely enough you will see there is a seperate sales only chart which is compiled the traditional way. My only complaint is that the sales chart should be the principal one. As the record books will show Justin Timberlake failed to get to No.1 when in fact it has been at No.1 in the sales chart for at least the last 3 weeks

A great year for Canadian artists - 16 weeks at number one so far (Justin Beiber - 3, Shawn Mendes - 2, Drake - 10).
By contrast only one week at number one for a British artist (Zayn). This must be one of the poorest years for British artists hitting number one for a while?

Whats the point in spamming every comment "Simeon Davenport"

R

RIME

While I agree it's a bit overkill (if I were to take a similar stance, I'd just make a solitary post), he wanted to make sure the people in opposition all got notice of the video, and since there's no BCC or anything for Disqus, he chose that route.

Dear everyone: If you think adding streams to the charts is stupid and it should go away, please watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AT8GgRpDDLI
Streaming won't be going away from the charts. it up and move on! You're always welcome to check out the sales chart.

Spamming everyone with this video, did you lose a bet with the guy or something ?

avatar

Simeon Davenport

0

No, I don't even know him. I replied to everyone with this video to help explain to them why streaming is included in the charts and why it's not going away. Did you watch the video? Do you understand why it's included and why it's not going away?

avatar

James A Beswick

Me watch it? God no. I couldn't give a toss about the charts, I download the new entries and that's it, where they are in the chart and who they're by I don't really care but other people might.

avatar

Simeon Davenport

Well if you ever want to know why streaming is incorporated in the charts and why it isn't going away, watch that video.

What's the point of the chart if the number one for weeks is just because of streams??

Rick Astley is number one in the album chart! I can't believe it! Rick is back! I never imagined he would have another number one album. Biggest surprise of the year! His last number one album was 29 years ago.

As for this Drake geezer, boring. Drake will probably be number one for the rest of the year. Wake me up when he drops down the chart!

Oh well, at least we got Rick Astley and his moves:

Ridiculous. Drake is Number 9 in Sales yet still apparently Number 1. Totally irrelevant - No wonder it was moved to Friday afternoon. No wonder the Pick of the Pops show on Saturday afternoon has more listeners - When charts had relevance as well as when music had variety.

R

RIME

2

I'd argue it's more relevant now since it reflects the current revenue climate. If accuracy leads to monotony, blame consumers.

The charts are a right joke now, Dave!

Hey, do you think adding streams to the charts is stupid? Do you think it should go away and it needs to stop? Well, please consider watching this video:

He talks about the Billboard charts specifically but the same thing applies to the OCC.

Spot on Dave. Who or what is Drake anyway?

my thoughts exactly. if the british music-consuming community doesn't use streaming then expect monotony lol

You don't know who Drake is? Sheesh, you must be living under some kind of massive rock. But I agree. 10 weeks? I'm calling BS on this one.

WHATS UR ISSUE WITH DRAKE?

I have followed the charts for the last 40 years, but I have to say I have finally lost interest. Streaming has made the charts a joke. Drake is the 9th best selling song of this week, but still no1. All past chart feats have been made obsolete. Has ruined one of the passions I had!!

R

RIME

1

The problem is you think raw sales are the only measure of success. Think of it this way: One Dance pulled in more revenue through royalty payments of streams and royalty payments of digital and physical outlets than any other song for 10 weeks. If you want to keep track of records through the sales chart, nothing's stopping you: it too is right on the site.

avatar

Geraint Gill

I think I'm the same, Mark, I used to be a huge chart fan but have now lost interest. I tend to listen to downloads of old charts now, maybe I'm just getting old!

avatar

Richard Goodyer

Point well put. Someone must like Drake.

R

RIME

2

Actually I don't really, and I must admit that it is a bit of a shame to see the top 10 so stagnant for almost a month now. Still, I accept that this is in fact reflecting current trends and so I don't shoot the metaphorical messager.

Got to change this streaming business!!!

So here is my opinion on the UK charts this week:
- Congratulations to Drake for a 10th consecutive week at #1 on the singles chart with 'One Dance'. :)
I do love this song but the Top 10 has become a bit stagnant. There is very little movement of chart positions & so many other great hits like 'Can't Stop The Feeling' & 'This Is What You Came For' have been blocked from the top. Hopefully 'This Girl' goes to #1 next week though... such a great summer dance anthem & it was only about 1,750 copies behind this week.
- There were 5 new entries in the Top 40 today & once again there's good variety & some of my favourite new music. It's always nice to see a lot of different genres enter the chart at once.
- On the albums chart, it's great that Rick Astley's '50' got to #1. I really like Tom Odell & his new collection 'Wrong Crowd' as well so I'm pleased that it entered at #2 (after a very close race throughout the past seven days).
As usual, great job to everyone in the charts today.

Hey OCC, enough already! Change the streaming rate!!

R

RIME

0

The current rate is derived from the value of streams on average as determined by the industry. It's not subjective.
