Every week we make comments about the state of the charts and quite rightly so and we should continue until someone listens to the people who have supported the pop charts for many years. Never have the charts been so bad. For your information the person in charge of the official charts company is MARTIN TALBOT and you should start to put him under pressure to sort out the weekly singles charts. If this doesn't happen then all it is doing is falling on deaf ears. We do NOT want streaming added to the weekly singles charts. It is wrong and makes the charts a complete farce. If the OCC company cannot deal with this then it needs to hand the reigns over to somebody else. Also does anyone from the OCC actually read these comments because we never see any comments from them, so start hounding them to get this sorted once and for all. Keep a streaming chart if you so wish but stop adding these into sales.

Hi Russell, i totally agree with your comments, but as i also point out every week. There is a sales only chart to click on which is how the main chart used to be compiled. Unfortunately it is not now known as the principle chart. And unfortunately it isn't much different to the main Top 100. So really, i don't think there's a lot we can do about it.

How many times do I have to tell you people? Streams are not going to stop being added to the charts!

I find it tedious to repeat over and over, but I'll say it again:

Streaming is the best way to see what songs are more popular now. Especially considering that in 5 years tops, sales will be 100% nonexistent and people will only be streaming music and not buying it, it's a good way to see what songs are more popular. If that bothers you, that's your problem, not the OCC's. Also, I doubt they ever read these comments, so feel free to whine and cry about it all you want, but they don't care about you or any of us. Streaming will continue to be added to the charts as long as it's heavily used, which it is. In some cases, streaming is used even more than sales, which shows how big it's getting.

If you want to see what the chart looks like WITHOUT STREAMS and ONLY INCLUDING SALES, feel free to check out the SALES CHART: http://www.officialcharts.com/charts/singles-sales-chart/

That chart is exactly the same as the normal chart but ONLY INCLUDING SALES and NOT INCLUDING STREAMS. That seems like the chart you're looking for.

Moral: STREAMING IS NOT GOING AWAY FROM THE CHART SO IT UP AND STOP WHINING IN THE COMMENTS THEY DON'T EVEN READ COMMENTS SO YOUR RANTS ARE POINTLESS. SALES ARE DYING SO STREAMING IS THE BEST WAY TO SEE WHAT SONGS ARE MORE POPULAR, THAT'S WHY IT'S ADDED. CHECK OUT THE SALES CHART IF YOU WANT TO SEE WHAT THE CHART LOOKS LIKE WITHOUT STREAMS.

Good day, Mr. Ansell.

The OCC listen to the people who PAY for the charts. That isn't us, it's the music industry and the BBC. As consumers, we have as much say as most people have in the running of their favourite football club or the plot of their favourite television programme.

It's great that Bowie is getting such recognition, but 12 of his 13 charting songs are decades old. I wish those would be on a different chart, so 12 other songs released this millennium (current songs) would be on the chart. What about the struggling new artists who would have made it onto the chart and had their careers in the spotlight who are now at #101, #105, #109, etc.

No exaggeration, I think the UK top 40 is irrelevant, defunct. The chart - as a platform for exciting new music - is over. PERIOD. This week there are no NEW entries in the top 40. Old David Bowie tracks are not new releases!

The chart is stagnant. Without enough new entries, new artists, pop music suffers.

Pre-internet top 40 had new entries each week, songs didn't stay in the chart for 15 - 20 or more weeks (very few could achieve that). I'm not against progress but the top 40 has no life to it, no sense of movement. Just the same stuff filling the chart week in week out. Don't be surprised if Justin Bieber holds the 'new' record for the longest time three singles by the same artist stay in the top ten. I think those three songs will be in the top ten for months. It's a near certainty Bieber is gonna have some new record for longest time three songs have been high up the charts, I reckon. What Do You Mean is currently at 4 - it's been in the chart for 20 weeks! Five months and it's still at number 4! LOL!

You can't uninvent the internet and streaming and downloading so there is no way back. This is the chart we've got and it's not going to change. Younger people just accept how the chart is but pre-internet it had so much more life, more variety, to it. I dunno, perhaps the spring months will see some new stuff in the chart but I can't see how you can change the actual format to make it more diverse. You'd need to scrap the current format and start again.

Well, considering sales are losing out and will soon be completely non-existant, the best way to see what songs are more popular is from streaming. That's why they put streams into the chart.

Simeone, it was so much better, exciting in the pre-internet chart era. That was the chart! New entries, songs going up and down much quicker, more UK artists in the charts too, greater mix of music. What's happened to the love ballads or the rock songs? Hardly any make the top 40. Indie pop? Gone too!

avatar

Simeon Davenport

0

Well, all I can say is that different styles have come and gone. Can't change that. But hey, who's to say they won't come back.

By the way, you spelled my name wrong. It's "Simeon," not "Simeone."

Absolutely agree. The only relevant chart nowadays is the album chart, if you want to know what people are really spending their money on, rather than just listening to. In years gone by there used to be an Air-Play chart, which listed the most radio plays. I would say that is nearest to the current Top 100 singles chart.

Stop it with the stagnant charts. We know. Besides, America's had that problem for years.

The real chart action this week is in the States where 2016 has definitely arrived. Check out the Billboard digital sales top ten, packed with major new hits from number 4 down. A proper new year clear-out, except for the top 3 which has a very familiar look.

What a relief to see only 6 JB songs on the chart this week. His songs are clogging up the charts right now. He really has been dominating this past half year. Although, seeing the same 3 songs by him in the Top 5 is getting very old. "What Do You Mean?" has to go, it's been here far too long. Hopefully, Shawn Mendes can break Bieber's streak by hitting #1 next week.

Some people are too lazy to do their own research, need to stop having a go at a site that provides it's content for free, And if they think they can do the job better set up a rival site. Like you say the info is pretty much all there they neeed to work out how to look for it and if they find discrepancies inform the web site so that they can double check and edit if need be!

12 freaking weeks of Justin Bieber (recently) at number 1... That's like summer vacation long.

Yeah, it is a little irritating, isn't it? Don't worry, hopefully Shawn Mendes will hit #1 next week and break Bieber's streak.

Elle King's'' ex's and oh's'' isn't doing well in europe because the vídeo is full of guys.
The song and the vídeo is way better than most crappy rock music in the charts right now like coldplay etc etc.

R

Elle King's father is Rob Scheider (Deuce Bigalow movies).
Considering almost 20 Bowie tracks popped up ahead of her, she (and Alessia Cara) both did good by climbing at all. When Bowie virtually disappears from next week's chart, both tracks will make further chart gains.

I think it would be great if people started downloading 'The Laughing Gnome' by David Bowie. A really funny and catchy tune that he released as a novelty single back in the 60s. It would certainly brighten up these January blues and would be a nod to the great man, I think he would be laughing as he famously didn't like performing it.
I remember back in 1990 when NME tried to rig the phone voting so that he would have to play it as part of the set list for his Sound and Vision tour. It would be funny if it charted.
I was listening to the chart for the first time since the 90s and the garbage that was playing while I waited to hear which Bowie tracks charted was unreal.
I'm hoping a new generation of fans who have never heard much of his music are inspired by the songs they have heard this past week. I really wish they had heard the songs for another reason and not for his unexpected death. R.I.P David Bowie

Why arnt the original chart possitions & weeks on the chart shown on all the Bowie tracks, its not difficult to get them, look in th Guinnes book of hit singles, very poor documentation from the charts company

R

It may be that the song is now on a different label, which would not be considered an exact match.

Exactly.

LB

Nothing to do with different labels, Heroes was originally on RCA but it is showing its previous wks on the charts, just sloppy documentation

I agree the Official Charts Company do stuff like this all the time in singles and albums theyre not at all fit for purpose. And then theres their ridiculous adherence to using the chart that didn't show the Beatles 'Please Please Me' at no1 when everyone knows it was No1 just because of the whim of the compilers of the old British Hit Singles book.

totally agree.....

avatar

Pete Seaton

because its technically a reissue and not a follow on. has a different catalogue number and lable.

the classic RCA work is now on EMI/Universal thus a totally new listing

original listings are where they are and reissues are in the 2016 bit

I think it is likely that the OCC only refer back to the charts from the time when they took over the running of the official charts, and ignore the previous "official charts" companies like BMRB, Music Week, and New Musical Express. I agree that the Guinness Book of Hit Singles and Albums is the only reliable archive source.

LB

Lee Brown

0

If this is so why then are they selective on what they show, Heroes, which shows original weeks on chart was well before OCC

BW

Bob Wood

0

Sorry, hadn't noticed that one. Bang goes my theory then! The one that stood out for me was Under Pressure, which everyone, except the OCC it would seem, knows went to No.1 in 1981, and yet is showing a first chart run 1999-2000, with highest position 14. It seems someone is just plucking info out of the air... Maybe someone should be giving the OCC a proverbial kick up the posterior!

avatar

simon_g42

0

It's a simple matter of slightly different credits. I assume the data has come from a number of different sources built up over many years. The original chart run of Under Pressure is credited to Queen And David Bowie. The re-entry is credited to Queen & David Bowie.

All we can do is give the OCC details of these little glitches and hope they have somebody with the time to correct them. If they were willing to pay me to interrogate their database to search for such anomalies, I'd be happy to oblige!
