Haven't done this for a while, so here's the album update: top 10 of the year - week 37
1) Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia - 2536
2) Queen - Greatest Hits - 2459
3) Fleetwood Mac - 50 Years Don't Stop - 2365
4) Ed Sheeran - Divide - 2335
5) Pop Smoke - Shoot For The Stars - 2297
6) Elton John - Diamonds - 2295
7) Harry Styles - FIne Line - 2290
8) Lewis Capaldi - Divinely Uninspired - 2247
9) Weeknd - Highlights - 2040
10) - Abba - Gold - 1982
Abba Gold climbs above both Rumours and Curtain Call The Hits to enter the top 10 of the year for the first time in 2021, just as it does on the weekly chart. All 12 are still on chart increasing their totals. Only Weeknd's Highlights is a new release this year and therefore the only one to not be on the chart for the whole year so far (37 weeks). 29 Albums still hold that feat as late as September! Highlights having 31 weeks on chart and counting.
As a Greatest Hits, Highlights is by far the biggest new release in chart impact points. Confetti by Little Mix is the biggest studio album that has not been on chart all year (35 weeks), but was released in 2020 and is at #23 on the chart impact points.
The top 2 new studio albums of 2021 are:
Justin Bieber - Justice (#28, 1254pts)
Olivia Rodrigo - Sour (#31, 1180pts)

I read somewhere that you only have to flick through the tracks of an album on Spotify or Deezer etc, and it contributes to having listened to the album. How is this fair and even legal? It just shows you streaming and its contribution towards chart positions is a complete farse!!

wow more garbage at number one. what is the point of sales when they don't actually mean anything. hardly a decent album or song gets to number anymore and thrash does cause it streams.
Zimowski
I think the same has been said many times for each format. ("that pwl produced pop and their cass singles.. ewww" , then r'n'b and downloads, now it's Drake and another new format. I don't see what's wrong with streams if they show how popular music is today
DK
Dave Knight
This is crazy, streaming has now took over the album charts aswell as the singles. Iron Maiden have a massive fan base compared to Drake who I never heard of until recently. Im starting to think the charts as we knew it is dead.
Carl Mefkintallica Foxall
Like i've said, the charts are fixed considering Iron Maiden were leading Drake by 8,000 sales just 24 hours before this chart was revealed
Damián
I still had faith on the albums chart but it seems manipulated chart positions have taken control here too
DK
Dave Knight
Yeah its quite sad really streaming has taken over with such dominace that it freezes certain artists from having a fair crack at the charts. The problem is because lots of fans from certain artists dont stream at all, I dont for example. So even though an artist can sell the physical format by the boat load, they will find it harder to get into the charts at all, let alone have a number 1.
This was most noticeable in the singles charts first, but I never thought it would transcend into the album charts.
The part which is farcical is a fan only has to skip through the tracks of an album on a streaming service such as Spotify, and it equals to one listen of the whole album, surely this is unfair.
You wouldn't go out and buy a vinyl album or CD to skip the tracks would you? So that is one main issue to me.
That coupled with the artists dont get paid properly via streaming. This has been well publicised from many artists of recent times.
To me the whole system needs to be made fairer because as it is it has become a joke.
For me the main problem with streaming is the fact its not equal in terms of how the fans obtain music..
For example if Iron Maiden fans or ABBA fans were all into streaming they both would have a number 1 easily blowing the lid off the top of the charts.
My point is Iron Maiden has proved they are still popular enough or have enough fans to have easily beaten Drake to number 1, but because the charts are so heavily dominated by streaming its become tougher for physical sales to get a look in. I suppose in hindsight Maiden has done well to get to number 2 as all of those contributions were physical sales or 90% of them
The industry now needs a shake up, I hope someone from the chart company reads this as sooner or later the charts as we know them wont be worth monitoring, already they look farcicle.
The charts no longer highlight the measure between fan base strength because not everyone streams or wants to.
Lots of fans still want to hold that product in their hands knowing they have supported their artists.
DK
Dave Knight
Where its fixed in my eyes is the fact you dont technically have to listen the whole way through an album on Spotify for example to equal one listen, so we dont really know if all the so called fans of Drake has even heard the album properly yet.
If you think about the time scale needed for everyone who has meant to have streamed Drakes album to have played it in full in a week which needs to be countless listens a week wouldn't be long enough. Of course there will be overlap with thousands listening, but in a week for millions to have all heard the Drake album is impossible.
Zimowski
but buying a CD also doesn't show if you've listened to an album. You paid certain amount of money buying it - that's what CC wants to know, not which songs you're playing
Damián
Absolutely agree with u Dave, couldn't be more
JW
James Williams
How have you never heard of Drake? Have you been frozen for the past 10 years?
DK
Dave Knight
Nop, never heard of Drake until the chart battle with Iron Maiden.
DK
Dave Knight
But statistically your more likely to listen to the whole album on cd as you have parted with your hard earned cash.
Compared to having music on the cheap via streaming.
Zimowski
I don't listen to CDs, most are still sealed. Some I give as a present and I can't guarantee that the person who got it also opened it.
But one listen doesn't equal one sale, it's made to compensate the price of the subscription. And having cheap music is great. And great not having to wait for delivery to listen an album/ single (it takes up to 6 month for stuff to arrive here, where I live)
Marko
Drake and Kanye West are terrible.
How can these metal heads listen to this trash The Wildhearts, it's awful.
Imagine Dragons with their worst album.
The previous was fantastic but this one is garbage.
PR
Paul Read
What makes you so sure that ANYONE is listening to it? They're only in the chart (likely as a result of hyping/'promotion' by the labels) as a means to persuade people to buy/download them ... it made you listen to them after all!
DK
Dave Knight
This is the farcicle bit about album streaming, you dont need to listen to the whole album from start to end.
Yet just clicking on certain tracks from within that upload equals a unit or whatever they call it to a whole listen.
Dayv Morris
Why wildhearts trash ? Also imagine dragon's wrecked is good
S
Sarah
I will never understand why people, rush out and buy albums because a artist has died, or because a very old over rated group decides to release new music. Then the next week no one bothers to keep buying those albums. It's rather pathetic. Reminds me of when the virus first hit, people rushed out and brought toilet paper. Go figure.
DK
Dave Knight
Yeah but Iron Maiden have a much bigger fan base than Drake. Streaming has ruined the charts in my mind.
A
addickted2hcharlton
Yeah but iss cos some of us like the memories of artists from the good old days gawn n we aint into all them wannabe singers who can't sing like Lipa n their ilk on ere.
Blank
There doesn't seem as much rush as could be expected, otherwise they would be #1 and 2 on singles and #1 Albums by a mile. They will be in November, but that chart pattern is in keeping with the rest of the year so far and with the final quarters of the last too. It is not unusual. The only thing that is different is the detail: It's Abba (not ACDC or Kylie). What is unusual is the gap between new material. Probably the biggest in chart history.
The Beatles had a 25 year gap with Free As A Bird when that was found in an archive and not a full album. This is a 40-year gap and remarkably, a new studio session after their initial career - not something dead discovered decades later.
L
Lissie
Actually it's not 1 40 year gap, it's 38. Thank you for the music was their last single.
Blank
But Thank You For The Music was recorded in 1977, not 1982. It was a very late release from The Album - track one of mini musical The Girl With The Golden Hair. The last full studio album was 1981 (The Visitor, 6 weeks short of 40 years).
PK

Gutted Toyah dropped out of the charts after 1 week too.

Glad to see ABBA Gold return to the Top 10. No. 5 is good enough, with another ABBA Gold version coming back to No. 72 and two studio albums reentering the chart - Voulez Vous and Arrival - at No. 58 and No. 100, respectively. What an ABBA Week!
GF
Gary Feld
I don't think they have ever had FOUR album chart places before?...i know they had three in 78....The Album/Arrival/Greatest Hits
M

Yes, ABBA is truly a pop music icon and giant in Great Britain. 2021 continues to be ABBA heyday. 2022 promises to be the same. ABBA Gold will soon surpass the six million mark in the UK.

Good news! The British are the greatest and most loyal ABBA fans!

Any album you can't physically buy should not be allowed in any chart. Streaming is so easily manipulated by record companies as seen today. OCC This is shameful.
PM
Paul Mount
Agreed. The charts need a complete overhaul. The singles chart should be based on individual tracks released as and identified as singles, not random downloaded album tracks. It would be easy to course correct the chart by making people download an entire album or none of it unless it's a track recognised as a single. Until the chart is overhauled it means nothing.
SB
Sunshine Boy

PR

Absolutely agree. I've been tracking the charts in detail over the last 2 years (had to find something to pass the time) and it is very apparent that there is manipulation as well as plain old fashioned hyping and even some obvious complete nonsense being included. The best example was a Kenny Rodgers album that appeared as a "Re-entry" a week after his death - it had/has never been released as a physical album in the UK, it was NOT available as an import (it was deleted from the US catalogues years ago) and has never been available as a digital download. A week later, it had vanished again.

Iron Maiden were 8,000 sales ahead of Drake yesterday so Iron Maiden are actually at number one NOT Drake and his auto ttuned rubbish Everyone knows the charts are fixed

ABBA at number 5!! Yippee..that is what i like to see..OMG, i love that band so much!!

The best selling album of the week is not number 1. Absolute Joke.
A
Andrew
The album chart is an utter farce (and has been ever since they brought in streaming as they did). The singles chart is a farce. However, the biggest farce of all - the OCC.
Carl Mefkintallica Foxall
Drake's only number one because it's a fix Iron Maiden were 8,000 sales ahead of him yesterday
D
Devastashun.
Agreed, the structure of the charts has been a joke for a while.
It's a pity it's now happening to the album charts as we know the singles chart has been a complete farce for years.
PM
Paul Mount
Well said. The singles chart is utterly valueless now, it means nothing
PK
Philip King
Agreed, came here to say the same thing that dullest artist on the planet Drake keeping the best selling album of the week by Iron Maiden from the number 1 slot they should rightly own.
PR
Paul Read
The album chart is good - for a laugh! Has entertainment value, but nothing else. I like to watch the hyped entries that come in up in the top 10 then disappear the next week ... totally laughable but better than watching TV
A
addickted2hcharlton
Ere are juss goes to show it aint based on sales no more, thass the problem before albums would sell well when they charted igh now they don't cos of all the streams.
Carl Mefkintallica Foxall
The charts were a lot better when Gallup were compiling them The OCC have killed the charts by allowing downloads and streams
