Madonna charting with 1990 album full of classics. Kylie miflop is nowhere to be found since her frontloaded overrated flop stop charting way back

I can't believe KIM WILDE new hit collection didn't make it to the Top 100!!
DK
Dave Knight
It will depend on what format it was released on. The new Thin Lizzy Greatest Hits is only released exclusively on vinyl, limiting its chances to compete in the official album charts. Could be the same for Kim Wilde.
I have heard some artists are only bringing out their albums on cassette. But there isnt a cassette section yet.
Damián
Its still on this week's new releases Thierry, so it's supposed to chart next friday. Lets hope so!

Thin Lizzy - Greatest Hits is currently a new entry at number 21 on the official vinyl charts, but isnt inside the official top 100 albums chart. Which begs the question what format is making up the official albums chart? I want to believe its CD's as streaming cant be affecting the albums chart aswell surely?
Rob Parkinson
Don't want to disappoint you Dave but of course it has a huge impact on the album chart, Olivia's 'sour' and Dave's 'were all in this together' are riding way up there through streams and so are long reigning albums like Mabel, Becky Hill etc and then there is all the classics that stick around like queen, Fleetwood Mac and ABBA. Without streaming a lot of the performances of these would be well lower, physical sales dominate week 1 of any release and that's generally the main impact sales have on albums, anything that sticks around for a long period especially in top 50 tends to have great streaming numbers as the sales have dwindled by then unless of course a limited edition or something drops to give it a boost again. It's just the way music is consumed these days.

I am a bit confused Rob, how can people stream a whole album, and if thats the case why isnt there an official steaming album chart?
I understand how you actually play an album on Spotify, but it would take an awful lot of people streaming a certain album for it to make an impact surely? Compared to a single.
My biggest complaint with Spotify is an awful lot of songs or even albums are not actually on Spotify yet or may never be, so how can those albums or singles gain streams? The newly released album Thin Lizzy Greatest hits isnt released on Spotify yet. There is still a lot of discrepancies in the industry.
DK
Dave Knight
Shows how nieve I have been because surely an album is best listened to on a CD or even vinyl?
I assumed streaming only existed in singles.
Rob Parkinson
You can stream anything, so of course people stream albums. Positive of streaming an album over CD or Vinyl? No scratches or jumping etc can still skip tracks.
Lars Van Moer
Thin Lizzy are at number 56 in the actual album sales chart. Also prog rock bands like Big Big Train and Porcupine Tree are doing a lot better there than on the total streaming-infected list, although even here Big Big Train enter the top 40 !
Rob Parkinson
That is a good question, I'm not sure why there isn't an official album streaming chart.
Taking an awful lot of people to stream albums but that's why the specific albums which get streamed just hang around in the top 50 for long periods.
All albums and singles end up on Spotify and other streaming services as it generates so much income, the stream of income may be far smaller than that of a sale but it is far more consistent and artists, record companies etc soon pop stuff on streaming when they need or want extra income.
The industry will be forever changing, even more so in this day and age, the time when cassettes came out after vinyl was huge and then between CDs and cassettes was pretty long but then downloads came pretty rapid and then streaming, it has happened pretty quickly but it is how music is consumed these days. Physical is a more retro approach that is growing for nostalgia and actually having it physically and supporting an act but it is still a tiny % of the overall consumption of music these days
DK
Dave Knight
Well you say that but how come there is a lot of singles and albums not on Spotify yet?
Blank
One reason is clearing or registering the rights for the format.
Rob Parkinson
A lot? There is like over 90% of all songs on streaming services and more gets added daily. It will be the case in the very near future where all songs are available to stream on one platform or another, with the exceptions being the streaming exclusive to one platform which amazon tend to do a lot of
DK
Dave Knight
Which isnt helping anyone trying to convert to Streaming not that I am, but was doing a few searches the other day, and today, and frustratingly cant find what is concidered by me popular songs of their time.,particularly single versions are hard to find, the album version might be there, but thats not what I was looking for as some single versions were completely different mixes.
Yet they are on CD's that I got, but of course those particular CD's are not there.
So in short there is an awful lot of material still not on Spotify, not even sure about other streaming sites.
EAKMUSIC
There is actually an official album streaming chart, click on albums and then click on streaming
Blank
Some rights owners simply have no interest in having their work available on streaming services, so if you're like me, trying to collect all the hits, the only way to do it is with original formats. Most of the time that will mean physical.
DK
Dave Knight
My God a section for streaming albums, whatever next?
How does that work?
How does the official chart company know whether or not everyone played the whole album or not? They might have skipped half of the tracks on the album.
Its a farse that section even exists.
How do I contact this company?

Nothin nieve abahrt it, cd or vinyl always sahnds better.
DK
Dave Knight
Exactly, what are they thinking? Surely that is ridiculous to even assume someone is constantly playing a certain album on loop?
They are more likely to cherry pick 3 or 4 songs and play those.
Why is there even a chart for that?
A
addickted2hcharlton
I'm n arf glad to see the Overtones in there at no. 27 well done to theirn n all.
