I do not really get this no album idea of Calvin Harris, I mean I can see some benefits but I see more flaws, he is at the height of his fame now, if he dropped 1 more album it'd easily top both sides, he'd have his first US top 3 album, I believe he should do 1 more anyway to capitalise on his success, now we just wait to see if Olly Murs pushes 24 HRS release back further to dodge the second week sales of Robbie Williams new album Heavy Entertainment Show out November the 4th, Nathan Sykes is in direct competition with Robbie's new album, good luck lol.

The second album can always be a difficult concept so for the second Bastille album to achieve critical acclaim is encouraging.This is now supported by its chart position.Watch this space but this album will prove to be a classic.

Ouch at Teenage Fanclub, No.10 for one week and then No.89 the next, at least it's still there, unlike The Cribs last album that charted at No.7 I think and vanished completely a week later.

Same for most moderately popular artists.The high chart position is based on pre-sales which can be based on over a month of sales before the actual release date.Devin Townsend Project 16 in mid-week chart, 26 in official chart last week.Completely dropped out of chart this week.Unless you have favoured artist status (which relies mainly on commercial tie-ins) by the mainstream / large financial backing by a Major Label you are relying entirely on your loyal niche fanbase.Streaming doesn't seem to have altered this situation or has magnified it even further, strangely.The general public don't seem to judge music with the ears.Celebrity status, which can be built up through highly financed marketing campaigns seem more likely to gain you popularity, sadly.

I think major label backing is a big part of it but an album still needs to be decent or at least have a few radio friendly songs for it to have any longevity which is why I think Bastille will struggle in the next few weeks (I don't think there's anything on there to the level of Pompeii). There's a few exceptions too which I love like the Nick Cave album still at 2, Skepta and Christine & the Queens all released independently and outselling many more expensive major label releases just by being really good.

How independant is Skepta though.In 2011? he signed a 4 album deal with Universal / Island.Was he dropped or is he still basically still signed to them.Having Pharell Williams (Universal artist) as one of the co-writers on one of the songs makes me feel suspicious.As well as the Drake & Kanye West (also Universal artists) recent 'big ups'.
