The Official best-selling vinyl albums and singles of 2023
Taylor Swift, The Rolling Stones, Lana Del Rey and The Beatles lead the biggest vinyl songs and albums of the last 12 months.
Taylor Swift continues to prove 2023 was her year, with 1989 (Taylor’s Version) crowned the UK’s biggest vinyl album of 2023.
Selling a total of 84,700 copies on vinyl since its release in October, the chart-topping album – which earned the biggest opening week for any album in 2023 – is the first of three of Taylor’s albums to feature in the Top 10.
In total Taylor claims eight of the Top 40 biggest vinyl albums of 2023, with the rest made up by Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) (4), Midnights (8), Lover (20), folklore (21), reputation (27), evermore (37) and Record Store Day limited edition release folklore – The Long Pond Studio Sessions (38).
Last week, BPI analysis of Official Charts data found that 2023 marked the 16th consecutive year of UK vinyl sales growth, and the highest annual sales figures for the format since 1990.
The biggest vinyl album of the year by a British act is The Rolling Stones’ Hackney Diamonds at Number 2. Released in October 2023, it became the Stones’ 14th Number 1 album, and even enjoyed a second week at the top as 2023’s Official Christmas Number 1 album.
Lana Del Rey rounds off an all-new Top 3 with Did you know that there's a tunnel under Ocean Blvd at Number 3.
Further chart-topping albums released in 2023 to claim a place in the Top 10 are Blur’s The Ballad of Darren (7), Olivia Rodrigo’s GUTS (9) and Lewis Capaldi’s second album Broken By Desire to Be Heavenly Sent (10). Just behind is Kylie’s ninth Number 1 collection, the September-released Tension (11).
boygenius’s The Record (14) and Council Skies by Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds (15) also feature in the Top 20, as does Foo Fighters’ June Number 1 But Here We Are (17), plus we see a second appearance for Damon Albarn with Gorillaz record Cracker Island (18).
Courteeners score a Number 22 placing in the year-end vinyl list with their 2008 debut album St. Jude, which broke records in January as it finally hit Number 1 after 15 years.
A huge moment in 2023 was, of course, the release of the Barbie movie, which broke records both on the box office and on the Official Charts. Its soundtrack, Barbie The Album, is at 33 in the year-end vinyl list, having spent 16 weeks at Number 1 on the Official Compilations Chart.
Blink-182 manage to earn a place in the list at Number 34 with their ninth studio album One More Time, and rounding out the Top 40 vinyl albums of the year is Ed Sheeran’s emotional sixth album – (subtract).
Biggest vinyl singles of 2023
The Beatles earn the biggest vinyl single of the year with their record-breaking ‘last’ song, Now and Then.
Shifting 33,000 copies on vinyl since its release, the legendary group offered the track in 12” and 7” versions, clear, light blue and blue/white marble editions on the format. When the track hit Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart on 10 November, they broke several records including the longest time span between an artist’s first and last Number 1, and of course the UK’s fastest-selling vinyl single of the century. boygenius – the supergroup made up of Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus – come in at Number 2 with their September EP the rest, while experimental producer Aphex Twin scores the third-biggest vinyl single of the year with Blackbox Life Recorder 21F. The Rolling Stones’ own lead single Angry, from their chart-topping album Hackney Diamonds, comes in at Number 4.
The Sex Pistols earn three places in the Top 10 with Anarchy in the UK (5), Holidays in the Sun (6) and Pretty Vacant (9), while Lana Del Rey’s Say Yes to Heaven, released in November as a limited edition picture disc, also finishes in the year-end Top 10 (7).
Two of the UK’s favourite Christmas songs round out the Top 10 following brand-new reissues; WHAM!’s Christmas Number 1 2023 Last Christmas is at Number 8, while Fairytale of New York by The Pogues ft. Kirsty MacColl lands at 10.
Notable tracks from 2023 to land in the wider Top 20 are Sleaford Mods’ cover of Pet Shop Boys’ West End Girls (15), Olivia Rodrigo’s Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes single Can’t Catch Me Now (17), Kylie Minogue’s Padam Padam (18) and Hold On To Now (19), and The Rolling Stones’ Sweet Sounds of Heaven ft. Lady Gaga and Stevie Wonder (20).
