The Hobbit is biggest selling movie franchise of 2015 so far

It’s the battle of the Hollywood blockbuster trilogies but there can be only one winner – and it’s The Hobbit series of films that leads the way in the chart of top selling movies of 2015 so far.

The first half of the year saw The Hobbit rack up a sales tally of over 1,000,000, finishing 250,000 units ahead of The Hunger Games across each franchise’s three available titles.

The Lord of the Rings prequels, based on the legendary novel by JRR Tolkien, starred Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen and Benedict Cumberbatch and closed out the trilogy with 2014’s The Battle of the Five Armies.

Settling for second place, the Hunger Games trilogy, starring Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence, will see its final cinema release later this year with the second part of concluding chapter Mockingjay.

Liam Neeson’s action trilogy Taken takes the bronze for 2015 at the halfway stage, following the release of the third instalment on DVD and Blu-ray this summer. To date, its total sales across its three titles stands at 500,000).

2014’s reboot of the popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise sees the heroes in a half-shell finish fourth for 2015 so far, making it the year’s most successful comic book adaptation, while Ben Stiller’s Night At The Museum movies were the fifth biggest selling movie strand and the top comedy franchise.
