Taylor Swift surpasses Madonna as female artist with most UK Number 1 albums with Lover (Live From Paris)
See Taylor's record-breaking chart feats in full

13 always was her lucky number! Taylor Swift breaks Official Chart records today, as she becomes the female artist with the most Number 1 albums in the UK ever.
Surpassing Madonna, Taylor secures the feat as she nets her 13th chart-topper with Lover (Live From Paris). Moreover, Taylor now draws level with Elvis Presley as the international artist with most Number 1 albums in UK chart history.
Lover (Live From Paris), originally released in limited quantity in 2023, soars to the summit thanks to a new, heart-shaped 2LP vinyl variant released in time for Valentine’s Day; shifting 47,000 units.
In doing so, Lover (Live From Paris) becomes the first album to reach Number 1 on pure sales (with no streams contributing to its total) in eight years, since Taylor’s very own reputation in 2017. reputation was added to streaming services three weeks after its initial release on physical and download formats.
It goes without saying that Lover (Live From Paris) tops this week’s Official Vinyl Albums Chart, too.

Martin Talbot, Chief Executive Officer, Official Charts says:
"If we thought Taylor Swift would peak in 2024, with her domination of the charts during the summer, we couldn't have been more wrong. What an amazing achievement to surpass the Albums Chart record of Madonna, such a huge music icon."
Elsewhere, Dublin-formed four-piece Inhaler celebrate their third Top 5 LP with Open Wide (2). Elijah Hewson, Robert Keating, Josh Bartholomew Jenkinson and Ryan McMahon previously saw similar success with 2021 debut It Won’t Always Be Like This (1) and 2023’s Cuts & Bruises (2).
Open Wide also tops the Official Record Store Chart, the most popular album in UK independent record shops this week.
Following his Super Bowl LIX halftime show performance last weekend, the most-watched in the event’s 58-year history, Kendrick Lamar’s former chart-topper GNX vaults back into the Top 5 (3). The record’s release on physical formats also aids its uplift.
Further down, Olly Alexander secures his first Top 20 LP as a solo artist with Polari (17). As a member of Years & Years, Olly previously enjoyed Albums Chart success with 2015’s Communion (1), 2018’s Palo Santo (3) and 2022’s Night Call (1).
American progressive metal outfit Dream Theater net an eighth Top 40 LP with Parasomnia (23).
And, finally, new mod revival group Block 33 – Dan Dodson, Jamie Moore, Andy Manning and Stephen ‘Keano’ Gardner – celebrate their first-ever Top 40 record with The Promised Land (24).

Madonna remains the greatest, she never needed to re-package, she did it in an error of no streams, she never released albums each year, she allowed her albums to have a longevity of at least 4 years. Madonna is the ultimate Goddess of Music.

So here we are at the inevitable and my bingo card is filling up nicely. Taylor's re-records are as legitimate as any remix or re-issue album. In fact more so because they are complete new recordings the same as any artist who records covers or otherwise doesn't write their own songs.
Works well for a number of artists in that top 10 list.
Just 2 more to equal the men and 3 to beat. Wonder what the excuses will be when the next 3 albums of new songs go to #1.

I knew you'd be here soon enough. Fact remains Kylie (your real fav) has not beaten the Queen of Pop's record, so I don't know why you're rubbing your hands together with glee. and even if Kylie does, Madonna still wins by a landslide worldwide anyway, not just in number ones, but also sales and touring, so you can keep checking that bingo card all you like.
D

We know full well Kylie isn't even in my top 10. Her first producers are.
If you search these forums deeply, you'll notice that I expected Madonna to lose her record, but not to Kylie. I'm right. That was about 5-8 years ago somewhere. In fact I expected the record to go to someone who was yet to have their debut as neither Kylie or Taylor then had the momentum they've achieved since.
My real favourites do each hold UK records, but not this one. Biggest selling female single, oldest female single #1, best selling worldwide album 1990s, 'most weeks on chart by a single Album' - 2 different artists, between them. Can you guess who they are? They are not anyone mentioned on the above list or this thread.
I'm happy do see artists I don't like lose their records. Next up, the Beatles. I don't like Robbie either but would like to see the record go. If anyone is going to do it, it's Taylor. Clearly at the peak of her career despite the length of it. Should get 3 more #1 albums before the decade is out.
I don't care about the world. The UK is a unique culture and the only one that matters here. The local artists, specific combination of international artists and records. Many artists who hit the chart only do so here. By far the most interesting variety of hits and artists worldwide.

I bring chart objectivity to Madonna threads. You're the one with Kylie living rent free in your head. Seemingly one can't exist without the other in these threads, even when the story is only about one of them.
Velvet Android
Correct me if I'm wrong, DJ, but "biggest selling female single" and "oldest female single #1" must be Cher (Believe), and "best selling worldwide album 1990s" and "most weeks on chart by a single Album" must be ABBA (Gold), at least based on the latter of those – was it the best-selling album of the '90s to boot?!

Thomsy26
Sorry but you can knock off 4 of those albums by Taylor Swift.... how can the same album peaking at number 1, be classed as another number 1. Oh yeah! Invent a scam drama and just re package your back catalogue LOL
Madonna did it purely organically without having to resort to re packaging old albums. Its a scam and the woke pro Taylor official chart leaders are just desperate for someone to knock Madonna off her throne. It wont happen, and certainly not legitimately!
Madonna still wins. On sales alone

Sure it's impressive despite poor sales these days ( live albums are not what you call big sellers overall) but there's just so many no.1 albums in a year these days ( Not even Ed Sheeran or Adele no longer dominate like they used too) I'm past caring even on that now...Madonna is still The Queen Of Pop when you add up the current statistics and I don't think she'll stay down long from another no.1 album to match or even overtake Swift with the current reissues contract she is under( read It up on Wikipedia). If at best Swift can now be called The Princess Of Pop in waiting.
annann
The Beatles with well over 100 weeks at No 1 speak volumes.
I suppose in the end it's mostly about the amount of records an artist has sold and not really how long it occupied the No 1 position or the length of time it has been on the charts so again it still speaks volumes about The Beatles who are also ranked probably the best in that department also. Not bad for a group that were not together for very long.

So why are The Beatles Sgt. Pepper and Abbey Road not classified as new number ones?
This OCC decision is illogical.
T
Thomsy26
Because they are being paid to give advantages to new artists like Taylor Swift.... who claims 4 number 1's with old albums. It discredits her as an artist tbh.
sashabertold
Taylor Swift's achievement seems so fake but yes she achieved it nonetheless.
Her music is so average to my ears and boring.....
I apologise if I offend anyone but I just find her really boring.
T
Thomsy26
Dont apologise! She has 8 number 1's in most peoples eyes! And only 4 number 1 singles
Piran
I'm surprised that this wasn't combined with the original version of 'Lover'. I kind of understand the "Taylor's Versions" being separate because there were new tracks on them and under a different record label, but neither of them apply here.
Good for Taylor nonetheless. I think it's cool that we have a #1 this decade that got there with absolutely zero streaming.

Madonna achieved hers legit, with pure sales and without re-recording her old albums and flogging 10+ variations of them. That is why Taylor has beaten Madonna's record, otherwise she would only have 8. The fact Taylor only has 4 #1 singles compared to Madonna's 13 gives a clear indication Taylors new "record" is all smoke and mirrors.
Aside from that, Madonna is THE ultimate pop queen that managed to grip pop culture in a way that left an indelible mark on it, she pushed barriers and advocated for womens rights just as fiercly as she did marginalized communites.
Her music has stood the test of time and she will continue to be the bigger and better artist no matter how many times others cheat and pull desperate stunts to break her records.

One just needs to do their research to see who in the music business brought something new to the table.
One thing is very clear The Beatles are in that certain group.
These artists are special and made a difference and paved the way for many other artists who followed them. They are cemented into the music history books. Cannot be changed.
The rest who did not make it were merely very popular solo artists, bands, groups. Fact!

Technically Madonna has 14 number 1 singles since Gimme All Your Love was discounted by the Official Charts because they claimed it was given away free, as an incentive to buy the MDNA album. It most certsinly was not free! You pre ordered the MDNA album and got Gimme All Your Love instantly BUT WERE CHARGED for it! Result??? The Official Charts decided to make up some bogus rule which stated that was wrong, resulting in first 3 days of sale being deducted. At the time ageist hate for Madonna was rampant in the UK press and i believe the Official Charts were acting to sabotage her 14th number 1. It would have been number 1. Yet here we are allowing Taylor to cheat her way up the charts.
T
Thomsy26
Nah just pointing out fact that re packaged old albums are essentially the same album. And she cant do this with her singles. Shes a cheat and has 8 number 1 albums.
J
jmp1963
Wow, you are bitter for some reason!
Let's use some of your logic then on Madonna. 2 of her number ones were greatest hits (re-packaging old songs) so don't count. Evita was an OST which included tracks by other artists so not technically a Madonna album, knock another off.
Only 2 of Taylor's versions of her previous albums made number one so why take 4 off her total? I see maths isn't your strong suit.
Having said that I think during Madonna's peak it was a lot harder to get a number one AND she is brilliant. Just don't know why you're Taylor bashing.
D
djcarbines
Agist hate eh? Well I did see a painting of her holding Jesus the other day.
B
BettyBoop3
More like facts, maths and the truth aren't your strong suit considering:
"Fearless - Taylors version" #1
"Red - Taylors version" #1
"Speak Now - Taylors version" #1
"1989" - Taylors version" #1
Secondly, we're talking about her repacking entire old albums, not singles, so therefore The Immaculate Collection and Celebration don't count, and even if they did I guess we should also discount GH's packages by Elvis, Robbie, MJ, Prince, Whitney, Kylie...the list goes on. Saying that, I bet you wouldn't discredit Taylor's GH's (lol) if ever she released one and it topped the charts.
Lastly, Madonna sings on 15 out of 19 songs on Evita, so therefore she sings on the majority and should be counted as a Madonna album.
sashabertold
Hey, I never knew this about GMAYL.
Thanx for the info!
J
jmp1963
@BettyBoop3
But, "Fearless" and "Speak Now" weren't number ones in their original version so have only been counted as number ones once. Can you not read?
Looks like your facts (and maths) aren't too good either.
In the words of Thomsy26 repackaged music shouldn't count so if that's the case then no, greatest hits shouldn't count for anyone, using their logic. Coincidentally, repackaged isn't the correct term for Taylor's Versions seeing as they were totally re-recorded from scratch and not simply the original recordings bunged together on a compilation and called a new album.
As I said earlier, I'm not bashing Madonna, I think she's brilliant. I like some of Taylor's music too amongst literally hundreds of other. All I was doing was pointing out hypocrisy!
That's the truth.
B
BettyBoop3
The fact that the original versions of Fearless and Speak now weren't #1's is irrelevant.
Besides, you said "Only 2 of Taylor's versionsof her previous albums made number one", which is still an incorrect statement when 4 of them went to #1.
We can all see what you wrote and know exactly what you meant, it's there in B/W, so don't try and twist it into something else.
and like I said before, using the Greatest Hits excuse doesn't wash when it's only the singles being repackaged, NOT entire albums.
