"He’s inspired generations on and off the pitch and we’re so proud to help bring such an important and powerful story to the screen."

Stormzy’s #Merky Projects will co-produce a new biopic following the life of Arsenal FC legend, Ian Wright.

The film will follow ‘Wrighty’ from his early years growing up on Honor Oak Estate in Brockley, to the influence of role models in his life including Mr Pidgen, a teacher who inspired Ian to believe in a brighter future and be the best version of himself, despite the harsh upbringing he was experiencing at the time.

Against a backdrop of 1970s South London, the story will highlight the rejection, hardship and personal self rage that permeated his life, before receiving his ‘last shot’ to become a professional footballer.

Commenting on his story and its shift to the big screen, Wright said: “Telling my story in full for the first time feels surreal and, in some ways, a long time coming. There are parts of my life that will be familiar because they’ve been talked about over the years, but this film is the first time we’re bringing it all together.

“My story is one that truly shows how the company you keep can break you down and build you up. There are hard-hitting moments but in the end I want it to give people hope and joy.”

#Merky Projects was launched last year as part Stormzy's #Merky brand, and aims to tell the stories of underrepresented voices within British culture.

Stormzy and Akua Agyemfra will be co-producers. Other members of the production team include Academy Award nominated producer Sara McFarlane and Stephen Tottingham.

Stormzy added, “It’s a real honour for #Merky Films to be co-producing Ian Wright’s story. Wrighty’s journey goes far beyond football – it’s about resilience, family and believing in yourself against the odds. He’s inspired generations on and off the pitch and we’re so proud to help bring such an important and powerful story to the screen.”

The film hasn’t been given a name or release date yet, but more information is set to follow in the coming months.
