Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s Murder on the Dancefloor reclaims UK chart peak amid Saltburn resurgence
The Saltburn effect roars on as Sophie’s 2001 track re-peaks on the Official Singles Chart
Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s Murder on the Dancefloor reclaims its Official Singles Chart peak of Number 2 this week, following its inclusion in Emerald Fennell-directed film Saltburn.
After making a spectacular return to the Top 10 last week, the second single lifted from Sophie’s 2001 album Read My Lips lifts six spots to Number 2. Only Noah Kahan’s chart-topping single Stick Season racked up more streams in the UK this week (7.5 million).
In fact, Murder on the Dancefloor surpasses last week’s best for Sophie; earning the most one-week streams since its release, with 4.7 million UK streams over the past seven days.

The song’s viral resurgence comes after its inclusion in Saltburn, starring Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi and Rosamund Pike, now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
The track is featured in a very memorable scene involving Keoghan’s character Oliver Quick, and has since become almost-inescapable on social media.
Last week, Sophie achieved a major milestone on the US Billboard Hot 100, as Murder on the Dancefloor entered the chart for the first time at Number 98. In doing so, it became Sophie’s first-ever chart entry in the States.

Speaking on Murder’s renaissance, Sophie recently told Official Charts:
“I’m always very connected to my music, and one thing I’ve always loved about my work is its ability to surprise me. Murder on the Dancefloor is a song I’ve been singing for 20 years, and I’m on really good terms with it. I love singing it, I love performing it and what’s happening at the moment is kind of magical, actually.
“Thank you [to all the fans new and old streaming the song] for such a magical adventure. I’m so proud of Murder on the Dancefloor, but I also share it with everybody who has love for it. I’m just having so much fun. Thank you!”
Could the release of a brand-new Murder on the Dancefloor remix EP, and Saltburn-branded reissues of the track across vinyl and CD formats, see the song climb to the top spot next week?
