Songs turning 20 in 2020
Ahh, 2000, the year that the Y2K bug didn’t destroy the planet, “social experiment” TV show Big Brother made its debut, and the Nokia 3310 (and by association, its built-in game Snake) reigned supreme.
For the Official Singles Chart, 2000 was a busy year; it holds the record for the most Number 1s in a calendar year with a mighty 43 songs occupying the top spot. It was a particularly successful 12 months for British pop; with All Saints, Robbie Williams, Geri Halliwell, Gabrielle, Mel C and Westlife scoring multiple hits across the year.
It was also a big 12 months for US female artists, lead by Britney Spears, who landed two chart-toppers with Born To Make You Happy and Oops! I Did It Again. Madonna landed a trio of his with American Pie, Music and Don’t Tell Me, and there were also anthems from Mariah Carey (including a still-baffling Number 1 collaboration with Westlife), Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, LeAnn Rimes and Aaliyah.
MORE: Every Official UK Number 1 song ever
Following a run of success in the late 1990s, brilliant – if slightly anonymous - dance music once again prevailed in 2000 thanks to acts including Aurora, Fragma and Sash!, who scored a fifth Number 2 hit with Adelante in 2000 and claimed the dubious honour as the act with the most Number 2 hits in the UK without ever having made Number 1. After making its mark in 1999, garage music continued its run of success into 2000 with a flurry of Top 40 hits, including Oxide & Neutrino’s chart-topping rework of BBC’s Casualty theme song (yes, this actually happened).
Finally, rock music also made a strong showing in the Top 40 in 2000. U2 made a triumphant comeback and topped the charts with Beautiful Day; Coldplay launched their debut album and landed Top 10 hita with Trouble and Yellow, and Manic Street Preachers earned their second Number 1 with Masses Against The Classes. US rock bands Blink-182, R.E.M and Red Hot Chili Peppers also landed some of the biggest hits of their career in 2000.
We’ve picked out a selection (120 to be exact) of notable songs from 2000, all of which - of course - celebrating their 20th anniversary this year. Listen on Spotify below; the songs featured are broken down by chart position at the bottom of the page:

Madonna's had about twelve chart-toppers in the UK yet none of them have reached the million sales mark. Most of the other big female artists have had at least one. Madonna fans claim it's because she's sold a lot of albums in this country but so has Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Whitney, Kylie and Britney. It's never stopped those artists from hitting the million milestone. On a side note, Music remains Madonna's last number one single to date on the US Hot 100.
