Mariah Carey leads three-way battle for Number 1 vs Tom Grennan and WHAM! with All I Want For Christmas Is You

Plus Lola Young's breakthrough hit Messy is surging towards a Top 20 finish.

Could it be tiiiime? Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You may reach Number 1 on the UK’s Official Singles Chart this week, but Tom Grennan and WHAM! are hot on her heels.

Rising from last week’s Number 5, All I Want For Christmas Is You leads the Official Chart: First Look following the airing of her Mariah Meets Rylan interview on BBC Two over the weekend, plus the release of new CD, 12” and 7” vinyl variants to mark the song’s 30th anniversary.

Mariah’s perennial Christmas classic first reached Number 1 in the UK in 2020, spending two weeks in the top spot. We’re a week away from the starting horn of the Christmas Number 1 race – can Mariah claim the ultimate Christmas accolade come December 20th?

Mariah has the edge at the halfway point of this week, but less than 300 chart sales separate the Top 3. Fresh from another weekend of putting up the Christmas tree, Tom Grennan’s Amazon exclusive It Can’t Be Christmas surges 23 places to 2, and WHAM!’s Last Christmas drops one place to 3.

Last week’s Number 1 Gracie Abrams could see her five-week reign with That’s So True come to an end, with it currently placing at Number 4 midweek.

Another new Christmas song rising the ranks is Laufey’s Christmas Magic. The Icelandic-Chinese artist’s 2024 Amazon Original made its Top 40 debut last week (39) and is tracking to rise 32 spots (7).

Finally, cutting through Christmas is Lola Young. Her breakthrough track Messy marked her first Top 40 single last week when it entered at Number 35, and it’s risen 16 places midweek to Number 19. Lola soundtracked the John Lewis Christmas ad in 2021, and was nominated for BRITs Rising Star and BBC Sound Of… the same year, losing out to Holly Humberstone and PinkPantheress.

Are we really meant to believe that a song only available on Amazon is out performing songs available across all streaming platforms - many with much bigger audiences? Something seems suss.

Can we not have old Christmas songs get number one, its so boring. Is having it amazon exclusive gonna really get it a number one highly unlikely with Spotify dominating streaming.

Had hoped apt might have its moment with Rosie album being released but oh well

Not a fan of ‘It Can’t Be Christmas’ but good to see ‘Christmas Magic’ in the Top 10.

‘Messy’ seems like it’ll become a very big hit in the New Year!

Also, #15 should be ‘Step Into Christmas’, not Elton John’s Christmas EP… 😩

It can't be Christmas and Christmas magic will both fall come tomorrow, with Spotify not releasing there numbers so early in the week but amazon do, also Mariah most likely drop off with the sales weaning throughout the week. Looks like Wham will be on top by Friday.

Think can't be Christmas will be a serious contender next week for no.1 though, being closer to Christmas and not being on acr but will be played so many times on alexia up and down the country with people requesting Xmas songs. Great tactic from amazon

Really good to see Messy in the top 20, however we do NOT need to make this Tom Grennan song a thing. Idk what happened but his vocals lately have been horrific, and this new one is no different. Hopefully Underneath The Tree can knock it out of the top 10 completely by Friday!!
