Florence And The Machine on course for first ever Number 1 single
Florence And The Machine look set to score their first ever Official Singles Chart Number 1 on Sunday with Spectrum (Say My Name).
Spurred on by their show stopping performance at T In The Park over the weekend, and a lavish video directed by renowned photographer David LaChapelle and a new remix by Scottish DJ and producer Calvin Harris, album track Spectrum (Say My Name), shoots straight the top spot today.
While the London-based group, fronted by lead singer Florence Welch have enjoyed two Number 1 albums - 2009’s Lungs and last year’s Ceremonials - their highest charting single to date was 2009’s You’ve Got The Love, which reached Number 5, and in 2010 a reworking by Dizzee Rascal, entitled You Got The Dirtee Love, reached Number 2.
Speaking about the track’s video, Florence said: “It was a complete dream to work with David LaChapelle. I collected his books as a teenager, and I fantasised that he would direct the video for Spectrum… from the moment the song was written. I still can’t believe it actually happened, and I'm completely overjoyed that he felt such a connection with the song.”
Current chart topper, Maroon 5’s Payphone, slides one place to Number 2, while Will.I.Am’s This Is Love holds firm at Number 3. Chris Brown’s Don’t Wake Me Up slides two places to Number 4, and London girl group Stooshe complete this week’s Official Singles Chart Update Top 5 with Black Heart at Number 5.
New Entries And High Climbers
Just two new entries in today’s Official Singles Chart Update Top 40, the first of which comes courtesy of former American Idol contestant Adam Lambert whose latest single, Never Close Our Eyes, looks set to debut at Number 13, while his second album Trespassing looks set to give him his first UK Top 10 this week, too. Indie rockers The Vaccines are on course for their highest charting single to date with No Hope new in at Number 30.
David Guetta climbs 20 places to Number 23 with I Can Only Imagine FT Lil Wayne and Chris Brown. It’s the French DJ’s 15th Top 40 single as a lead artist. Meanwhile, LMFAO climb eight places to re-enter the Top 40 with Sexy And I Know It (40), and Nicki Minaj’s Pound The Alarm scores its highest chart position to date, up six places to Number 10.
The Nations Favourite Number 1 Single
And finally, new ITV series The Nation’s Favourite Number 1 Single, celebrating 60 Years of the Official Singles Chart, kicked off over the weekend; no less than eight former chart topping tracks that featured on the show now look set to return to the Official Singles Chart Top 200 this Sunday.
These include The Verve’s The Drugs Don’t Work (74), Coolio FT LV’s Gangsta’s Paradise (80), Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy (81), The Fugees’ Killing Me Softly (113), The Animals’ The House Of The Rising Sun (122), Marvin Gaye’s I Heard It Through The Grapevine (149), The Streets’ Dry Your Eyes Mate (172), and the show’s theme song, Tinchy Stryder FT N-Dubz’ Number 1, re-enters at Number 175. Ben E. King’s 1961 classic Stand By Me, which was also featured on the show, climbs a massive 84 places to Number 52. The Nation’s Favourite Number 1 Single is set to continue this weekend on ITV 1.
