Black Sabbath guitarist diagnosed with cancer

Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi has been diagnosed with cancer.

The 63 year old guitarist, who is widely credited with inventing heavy metal, has been diagnosed with the early stages of lymphoma.

The news comes as Iommi recently re-grouped with bandmates Ozzy Osbourne (vocals), Geezer Butler (bass) and Bill Ward (drums) to start work on the first new material the original line-up of Black Sabbath have recorded in almost 33 years.

“With the news that Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi has been diagnosed with the early stages of lymphoma, his bandmates would like everyone to send positive vibes to the guitarist at this time,” reads an official statement from the band. “Iommi is currently working with his doctors to establish the best treatment plan - the ‘Iron Man’ of rock ‘n’ roll remains upbeat and determined to make a full and successful recovery.”

The band’s as-yet-untitled album, which is being produced by Rick Rubin (Slayer, System Of A Down, Johnny Cash), is expected to be released later this year.
