Sales of cassettes surged in 2025, but who came out on top?

Sales of cassettes boomed in 2025, according to Official Charts Company data.

After a slight dip in sales in 2024, the rewind format bounced back in 2025 with 164,000 units sold, up 53% year-on-year.

While sales are not on the same scale as the vinyl revival (7.5m vinyl albums were sold in 2025), cassettes are proving to be a pivotal extra format in the race for a Number 1 album. That can be said for 2025’s best-selling cassette album, Better Man from Robbie Williams, which sold 21,400 copies.

Released digitally in December 2024, the soundtrack reached Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart in late January after its physical release, putting Robbie level with The Beatles for the most UK Number 1 albums in UK chart history. 49% of its 43,000 combined chart sales were cassettes, proving that the comeback format is a key ingredient in the recipe for chart success.

Dave’s Number 1 album The Boy Who Played The Harp lands in second place with 15,800 sales, trailed by another huge rap chart-topper in third, Can’t Rush Greatness by Central Cee, which shifted 9,500 cassettes.

The biggest British album of the year overall, Sam Fender’s People Watching, ranks fourth, with Sabrina Carpenter claiming the biggest international cassette album for the second year straight, this time with Man’s Best Friend in fifth.

Chart-topping albums including Mumford & Sons’ Rushmere (6), Elton John & Brandi Carlile’s Who Believes In Angels? (7), and Ed Sheeran’s Play (8) feature in the Top 10, ahead of BLACKPINK member Jennie’s debut album Ruby (9), and Critical Thinking (10), the latest album from Manic Street Preachers.

Other Official Albums Chart Number 1s that feature in the wider Top 20 include Taylor Swift’s The Life Of A Showgirl (11), Wolf Alice’s The Clearing (13), Lady Gaga’s Mayhem (14), Florence + The Machine’s Everybody Scream (17), Kylie Minogue’s Kylie Christmas (Fully Wrapped) (19), and Olivia Dean’s The Art of Loving (20).

While the cassette singles market is much smaller, the pop girlies love a cassingle! Olivia Rodrigo’s Vampire ends 2025 at Number 1, ahead of runner-up Twilight Zone by Ariana Grande.

JADE takes out three entries in the year-end Top 10 with FUFN (F**k You For Now) (3), Angel of My Dreams (8) and Fantasy (10). Other acts in the Top 10 include The 1975, Doechii and The Cure.
