BRAT
by CHARLI XCX
brat is not just an album. It's a state of mind. It's a lifestyle. Released on June 7 2024 via Atlantic Records, brat is the seventh album by Charli xcx, and the record where the perennial pop underdog's forward-facing instincts finally allowed the mainstream to catch up to her in real time.
A record indebted to, and in servitude of, The Club, brat can be seen as the mercurial meeting point between several of Charli's past works; the vertiginous, elasticated moody synth-pop of her underrated debut album True Romance (b2b), the heady and manic pace of her ahead-of-their-time mixtapes, Number 1 Angel and Pop 2 (club classics), the restlessness of How I'm Feeling Now (Apple) and the undeniable commercial sheen of Crash (Von dutch).
Instantly, brat became a sensation both on the internet (normal for Charli) and soon in real, actual life (something that is not normal for Charli). It was a watershed moment for both xcx and her anachronistic brand of pop, which has so often relied on a narrative of being ahead of curve. Now, suddenly, brat was the curve. It's eye-catching (yet horrifying) shade of green was everywhere, influencing everything from TikTok dances to the branding of US presidential candidates. It is (finally) an xcx World, and we're lucky to be living in it.
Debuting at Number 2 on the Official Albums Chart, Brat may have initially been denied the top spot, but it's longevity (staying in the Top 10 for longer than any of her previous albums combined) and the continued success of it's singles (four and counting) proves that pop is marathon, not a sprint, and Charli has more than enough stamina to compete.
As with every cultural sensation, brat lived many lives beyond its release. It was one of the 12 shortlisted albums the 2024 Mercury Prize, the most coveted award in British music and suddenly, Charli was the name on everyone's lips.
brat's initial denial of Number 1 in the UK helped to feed into its legend, but on October 18 the long-heralded remix album (Brat and it's completely different but still brat) featuring pop A-listers like Billie Eilish and Ariana Grande alongside cult favourites like Bb Trickz and Shygirl helped brat finally reach Number 1 in the UK, becoming Charli's second UK chart-topping record.
brat summer, forever and ever.
