Can someone please tell me, why a band as massive as BLONDIE, hasn't charted with their last 4 releases in the UK? Seriously when "Drake, Ed Sheeran can have nearly 25-30 songs in the top 100, I think the so called official Uk chart is dead.

it's a streaming chart with a few sales thrown in. ultimately OCC are just reporting the facts, it's not their fault 1000s of people stream ed and drake. i think a warts and all chart is better than a chart with silly rules like those in 2006 which excluded tracks because they weren't available in record shops.

The shape of you at best is a reasonably good song, not needing people lapping it up as if it were gold dust. Now it's Kendrick Lamars turn to take the chart over with Ed. The chart is pointless.

Scrolling through the comments I can see that you all envy Ed Sheeran the success. Most of you are haters. DIVIDE is the only album in history of pop music that has all 16 tracks on TOP 100 Chart ! I'm proud of my favourite musician Ed Sheeran ! He's done it all by himself ! I'm proud of all the songs on DIVIDE, because they are amazing. Ed Sheeran means the world to us, his fans sheerios, so stop spilling the hate on him ! I don't spill hate on some musicians I don't like. You should do the same. The world would be better without hate.

Is the qualifying statement here the "all" or the "16"? Because, on both counts, Drake beat that by having the entirety of More Life (22 tracks) on the Top 100 when it launched. In addition, this week, all of . (14 tracks) is on the top 100 as well.

Hey guys! This is the person formerly known as Synthesiza. Before I present the Ups and Downs of this week, I changed my name to The Sempiternal Single. I wanted to change it some time ago but couldn't think of anything good until now. Yes I am Synthesiza, you may be able to tell as I've not changed my profile picture. You can call me TSS or Semmy for short. If you want to talk about my new name and what it means etc., go ahead. Anyway, let's go.

Ups:
I'm happy to see Symphony hit a new peak, even if I'm disappointed it didn't go to #1.
Although I like Sign Of The Times, I'm kind of happy it's off #1, showing that #1 durations are possibly dropping. Then again, I thought that some time ago, and was disproven.
I'm glad that Big For Your Boots is out of the top 40. No explanation.
Royal Blood managed to enter the top 100, eh? Well I suppose that counts as an up, as I like their song 'Figure It Out'.

Downs:
Shape of You returns to #1! Well, it shouldn't be #1 for as long as it was previously but it's stupid it's at the top again.
Kendrick Lamar has 5 songs in the top 40. FIVE! And one at #6. I hate Kendrick Lamar, his voice is terrible, he relies on profanity and is overrated. Even more problematic in the rest of the top 100.

Overall okay week except for Shape Of You getting back to the top I guess

Hey Semmy! I hope your week is going well. :)
Yeah, I'm interested as to why you've changed your name on here. Oh, if you're wondering where my Top 40 review is, it got posted on another Official Charts article for some reason, so if you're curious, you can find it if you click on my profile.
Anyway, here are my ratings for this week...
Great (5 points): #2, #3, #4, #12
Good (4 points): #6, #7, #11, #13, #18, #21, #23, #25, #26, #30
Decent (3 points): #1, #5, #9, #14, #16, #22, #24, #27, #28, #29, #32, #34, #38, #39, #40
Meh (2 points): #8, #10, #15, #17, #19, #31, #33, #35, #36
Bad (1 point): N/A
Awful (0 points): #20, #37
TOTAL SCORE: 123/200 (61.5%)
Last week: 117/200 (58.5%)

Haha I was literally scrolling down the comments wondering where you are, and I guess there was a glitch, possibly the same happened with '5 chart facts of the week' because when tried earlier, the page was broken.

ooh, so 'Sign Of The Times' is a great, is it? I think the issue with that song is that it's way too long.

avatar

Piran

Yeah, what happened with me was that the summary article refreshed at the usual time, but I couldn't access the full Top 100 for a couple of hours later.
Regarding 'Sign Of The Times', I would say I love it now! Harry's falsetto is probably my least favourite part of the song & I agree with you that the song could be a bit shorter (especially the riff at the end), but it's amazing other than those two things! :)

Considering that 'Sign Of The Times' has only sold 16,686 copies this week (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_in_British_music_charts#Number-one_singles_sales), does that mean that he has broken the record for the lowest weekly sales for a number 1 single?

The previous record was held by Oasis, with 17,694 sales (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UK_Singles_Chart_records_and_statistics#Lowest_selling_number_one).

avatar

candog75

1

Correct - this is the lowest weekly sales figure ever. Although the previous record was held by Orson - No Tomorrow back in 2006 - a time when CD singles were dying and digital downloads were only just taking off.
Anyway expect that record to be broken a lot this year and it won't be long until the sales number one figures drops below 10,000

Well the chart remains in a dismal state. Ed Sheeran has gone back up to number one and is on target to become the UK's longest running number one ever with his track 'Busking In Camden Underground Station'.

Er I mean... 'Shape Of You'.

This week's top 40 has five new entries - four of which are by Kendrick Lamar! Nice to see the OCC is doing NOTHING to stop multiple songs by the same artist/group. You'd think Ed Sheeran having his entire album in the top 20 singles chart (a few weeks ago) would give them an incentive to do something but nope, no change to improve things. No point expecting change if it never comes, eh!

R

Don't you mean 6 new entries? Did You See (41-36) and The Cure (23) are both brand new to the top 40 and are non-Kendrick.

Hoping "Symphony" can dethrone "Shape of You" next week, because it's the only song right now that's steadily rising and has an actual chance, while the latter is using up whatever's left in the tank, plus I like "Symphony" a lot more.

"Unforgettable" by French Montana (feat Swae Lee) debuts at number 63. The song is already a Top 40 hit on the Billboard charts, and has also charted in Canada, Sweden, and Switzerland. The song's music video was filmed in Kampala, Uganda in East Africa and is my favorite video at the moment https://youtu.be/CTFtOOh47oo

R

Not a top 40 here in the States that Billboard cover, it only debuted at #74 this week. (and no, the genre charts are not usually what we call top 40)

Please cap the number of tracks per artist to the 5 best selling or something, this is getting boring, same old "aren't they credible" blokes clogging it up week after week. How are new acts supposed to build any kind of brand if they can't score a hit because Sheeran, Drake, and Lamar are hogging a third of the chart places?

avatar

I Am A Stegosaurus

That wouldn't help really, they would still have 5 in the top 40

No longer a SINGLES chart is it? Every week if a big new album is released all the best tracks now enter the chart....this chart is now irrelevant.
