Charts are getting pathetic, only singles should enter the chart.

There are only singles in the charts, no album tracks

That's obviously not true. As soon as a big selling new album is released, some album tracks make it into the chart.

So glad Ed isn't number 1...again...so happy for RITA ORA, i mean RITUAL is one of her best song and was surprised it only reached 40 after so many weeks on the chart!...so now she is close to reach the top 20!! Great news for Freya..her album going to number 1 will have been so great but hey..again..we have to thank Ed for that!! Big fan of Sam Smith but his new song is just awful, boring...

Just 3 entries in the Top 40 this week. Well, I guess we aren't tired of hearing the same things every week. I'm a little sad that "Cross Me" by Ed Sheeran has dropped out, it's actually one of my favs right now. On the otherside, Señorita is number one. So I guess it's a good run this week.

His name does appear a few times and with so many tracks appearing and disappearing it can be hard to track what's happening with his individual songs so cant blame you ;)

Has anyone checked the suicide rates from last week? I wonder how many people got depressed or jumped from a bridge because I Don't Care was off the list. Let's take for example young John Doe. For fact I know that he believes in the official charts and that songs that are more streamed or bought get higher ranks than others that perform poor. So this young fella was in fact streaming Ed Sheeran's I Don't Care like . And then... it disappeared from the charts. And he is not smart to understand that only 3 Ed Sheeran songs can be included in one chart. So this poor boy's world collapsed and... it didn't end well. All I can say is that we found his farewell letter with a photo of Ed and Justin Bieber with the latter's head cut out of the picture.

there's four tracks with beyonce as lead artist on this chart which is surely a mistake (as is her butchering of the lion king in general) - 45, 56, 59 and 87.

My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as always…

‘Senorita’ by Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabello returns to the top of the singles chart for its second week at #1! It accumulated over 68,000 chart sales this week, consisting of 9,200 downloads & 8 million streams.

‘Senorita’ also spends a second consecutive week at #1 on the national airplay chart.
http://ukairplaychart.com/

‘Old Town Road [Remix]’ by Lil Nas X ft Billy Ray Cyrus has now been #1 on Britain’s YouTube chart for the past 14 weeks, with roughly no change in views at around 3.75 million.
https://charts.youtube.com/charts/TopSongs/gb?hl=en-gb

Elsewhere, in the US, ‘Old Town Road’ is looking likely to become the longest Billboard Hot 100 #1 of all-time this Monday (17 weeks).

SAM SMITH - HOW DO YOU SLEEP? (#12)
Sam Smith seems to have a much longer single rollout than most big artists have recently & essentially the opposite to what Ed Sheeran just did, since it’s been months since ‘Dancing With A Stranger’ became big! Although with this, I’m sorry, it doesn’t come close in all honesty. I always said that ‘Dancing WIth A Stranger’ was an amazing song & would be a hard act to follow, but there were clearly risks being taken here, which sadly didn’t pay off in my opinion. I can’t even blame Sam for that though, since he carries a level of charisma & a good sense of his rhythm on his part, but this is also trying to go into both a 90s R&B direction, as well as a more poppy one, but trying to stick to both of those lanes kind of made this song a lot more messy than it needed to me. The bigger issue comes in the post-chorus drop, where the squawking effects drown out almost every other feature here & the underlying beat isn’t even in time with that at some parts! I can absolutely get behind how relatable the lyrics are, especially for people whose partners have cheated on them, but Sam Smith’s done this sort of thing a lot better in the past. Light 5/10!

ELLIE GOULDING & JUICE WRLD - HATE ME (#36)
No joke, I’ve heard this so much across so many different radio channels, that I thought it already hit the Top 40 & that I reviewed it! Anyway, I guess that’s a good sign that the song could have some staying power. As for the song itself, eh, it’s decent, but far from Ellie Goudling’s best. I do feel that this is a good pairing when it comes to hearing both sides of a toxic relationship, but it’s clear that Ellie Goulding completely outshines Juice WRLD here, since the former captures that emotion & tension amazing well, especially in that falsetto, while the latter provides his usual warbled tone. I guess this could’ve developed into something more given the dark & creepy production, especially with the bass hitting notably harder in the second half of the chorus, except the hook is just too repetitive & lacked effort in my opinion. I mean, I’m still pleased that Ellie Goulding could be about to get another hit, but I just wish it was something on the same level of quality as say ‘Burn’ or ‘Love Me Like You Do’, that’s all. Solid 6/10!

JOEL CORRY - SORRY (#38)
Unlike other songs that have been on Love Island, I feel like this one would probably have got this high anyway even if it didn’t (& trust me, this will climb a fair bit further up the chart!). As for this, it certainly has all the essential ingredients to become a midsummer banger, but I’m not sure how well they’re all mixed together. I think where Joel Corry went right straight away was the clever fusion of a jaunty piano, as well as bringing house back to the dance scene. The female vocals also seem to be mixed perfectly into both of these production aspects. However, despite a promising beat, the hook does fall a little bit flat for me to be honest, since I don’t think it’s going to bring the hype in the clubs or dancefloors that it’s going for. That being said, it’s not far off at all & since I’ve not talked about this guy before, I’d be curious to see what he does next. As it is, light 7/10 for this!

LIL TECCA - RAN$OM (#40)
When I did my research into this & found out it was from a young trap MC who I never heard of, I didn’t have the biggest expectations for this… however, while it didn’t take me too long to see some appeal, it’s definitely not for me. I get that loads of people, including me, are getting so tired of monotonous & auto-tuned vocal editing, but I think that Lil Tecca does it in a way where the melody at least becomes a bit more laid-back & less annoying. I also feel like that’s partly helped by the gentle sparkle in the production too. However, I do find the irony comes into the content, where Lil Tecca mentions that he’ll take other rappers for ransom if they steal his flow, yet his delivery sounds extremely similar to something A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie would try. Other than that, it’s just another dose of cheap brand name bragging & flubbed rhymes, so while you’re not missing much, it’s at least tolerable coming from a 16-year-old rapper, but still, Light 5/10 here!

On the albums chart, Ed Sheeran is #1 for a second week in a row with ‘No.6 Collaborations Project’. It has roughly an equal split of sales & streaming (including 41% physical sales). Once again, it outsold the rest of the Top 5 combined!

Speaking of which, the rest of the Top 5 is: ‘Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent’ by Lewis Capaldi (stationary at #2), Freya Ridings’ self-titled debut album (debuts at #3), ‘When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?’ by Billie Eilish (3-4) & ‘Anima’ by Thom Yorke (debuts at #5).
https://www.officialcharts.com/charts/albums-chart/

Looking ahead to next week, these songs could enter the Top 40 for the first time: ‘The Archer’ by Taylor Swift, ‘Gold Roses’ by Rick Ross ft Drake, ‘I Could Get Used To This’ by Becky Hill & Weiss, ‘Bad Behaviour’ by Mabel, ‘Good As ’ by Lizzo, 'Outnumbered' by Dermot Kennedy & maybe even more.

Thanks for reading everyone! I hope you all have a good weekend. :)

Unfortunately, I disagree with all three songs I've heard :(

I like "How Do You Sleep" very much, it's the song I'm listening the most right now. I do agree the drop is the worst thing here, quite annoying actually, but I'm propably not going to mind it too much as I'm hearing it more. Still a solid 8 for the song. That is a bit worse than the 9 for "Dancing With A Stranger", however interestingly that song started with a lower starting score of 7,5!

As for "Hate Me", yeah I agree with a lot, although I appreciate Juice WRLD a lot more in this! Sure Ellie stills outshines him, but as we've discussed, I've given Juice the "worst" title in multiple occasions, so comparing to that he did better than I expected.
This is worse than some of Ellie's biggest hits and not as good as "Close To Me", but still a light 7!

As for "Ran$om". I mean you know my dislike towards boring crappy trap music so that tells a lot, although I guess this is better than the absolute worst. Maybe a 3,5.

Wow, How do you sleep 5/10? Hopefully, it'll grow on you. ;). It's kind of a slow burner.

Hi Piran, hope you are well. I agree with all your new entry reviews 100% this week Piran, I keep wanting to like Ellie's recent hits and her voice is still spot on but something is just not connecting with me for some reason. What is making you think that Becky Hill & Wiess could hit top 40 next week as it has been around far longer than I wish well and seems to be on a decline? I hope it does crack the top 40 as it is a great track.
Also I have listened to Freya's album a few times and I am impressed, there is a good variety with 'ultravoilet' and 'love is fire' standing out currently but there is not a track I dislike

Hey Piran! I really like that 'Señorita' goes back to #1 this week as well, and that Ed still has a #1 album and 3 Top 5 singles. It's really interesting that Ed's 3 singles this week are the 3 singles that had already reached the Top 5 before the album released as well, and that re-entry at #3 for 'I Don't Care' must be one of the highest re-entries in chart history!
As for the debuts, I agree that Sam Smith can do better, but I still liked 'How Do You Sleep?' slightly more than you, as it'd probably be a solid 6/10 for me. 'Hate Me' was easily my favourite debut of the week, and I definitely liked it quite a lot more than you since it's a strong 8/10 - light 9/10 for me! Ellie is definitely better than Juice WRLD, but I still actually liked his parts quite a bit, and a lot more than I usually like his songs! 'Sorry' is another song that's just decent for me, with a light 6/10 for me, and 'Ransom' is almost the same with a strong 5/10 here. All in all, not a bad week for debuts, but only 1 really good one for me.
Next week I can really see 'Ladbroke Grove' becoming a Top 5 hit, as it's currently #4 on Spotify and #7 on Apple Music, and Ed will almost definitely still have 3 Top 10 hits, if not 3 Top 5s, and 'Señorita' should be able to stay at #1. As for debuts, though, it really looks like it'll be a very quiet week. The highest debut on both Spotify and Apple Music was 'Gold Roses', at #43 and #42, respectively. I could even see there not being a single Top 40 debut next week, but I think it's more likely that we'll just see a couple of low down debuts instead.

avatar

Piran

1

Hey Gameskiller! :)

Apologies for the late reply as I only just got back, but yeah, it seems like I haven't missed too much.

So with last week's debuts, it seems like we mostly agree, apart from on 'Hate Me'.

'Senorita' will definitely be #1 today, but it could face some competition next week. Ariana dropped a new song called 'Boyfriend' out of nowhere today, which I expect to do consistently well (especially on sales). 'Beautiful People' also reclaimed #1 on Apple Music, so even that's not out of the race just yet either.

I agree that 'Ladbroke Grove' looks to be heading for the Top 5 later, but I also think '3 Nights' will manage to sneak into the Top 10 as well, maybe 'Sorry' has a chance to do so too. 'Gold Roses' does indeed seem like it'll be the only new song definitely entering the Top 40 this week, although 'Good As ' & 'Lalala' are probably the nearest after that.

Hey Rob! I'm good thanks, how are you? :)

I'm glad we share the same thoughts on the new Top 40 arrivals this week.

'I Could Get Used To This' was nearing the Top 40 on Apple Music earlier this week, but yeah, it seems to have declined since & doesn't look like it'll enter now, at least not for tonight's chart.

I'll have to hear both of those! I did hear 'Unconditional' as an album track a little earlier & liked what I heard.

Hopefully I'll see you later on the new Top 100 page!

avatar

Piran

1

Yeah, I just wasn't that impressed at all to be totally honest. That said, most Sam Smith songs tend to grow on me, so let's hope this one does too. :)

avatar

Piran

1

Hey Henri! :)

At least we appear to agree on 'Hate Me'! It's good for a Juice WRLD song, but rather disappointing for an Ellie Goulding one.

So what did I miss this week then? I know 'Old Town Road' got the record after all (sigh!) & Blue Ivy Carter became the youngest female ever on the Hot 100, but did anything much happen elsewhere?

avatar

Henri Laitila

1

That covers a lot TBH. I would add Jay-Z winning the "battle" for the next act to hit 100 entries in the Hot 100, which we discussed earlier. I mean sure, it was all thanks to Beyonce just featuring him on the Lion King soundtrack, but that is Still a respectable thing to earn!

I'm actually glad Jay-Z won this "battle" because while I'm not a fan, he might be my favorite of these four artists who were close. Kanye's music is nothing bad, even if it has gotten worse lately, but don't like him as a person. Chris Brown's music is mostly good but same reason for him on the personal side. And let's not even get started on Future, music and person!

It's also very good that I actually like all of those five acts who have so far earned that 100 mark. I mean, Drake can be really bad but also really good at his best. Pretty much the same for Lil Wayne. From what little I've heard from Glee Cast, nothing has been bad so far either :)

avatar

Piran

1

I did feel like Jay-Z charting would be thanks to a Beyonce feature, given that she seemed to have a very small album bomb (if we can even call it that) thanks to 'The Lion king' or 'The Gift'.

I mostly agree on what you have to say about the other artists here too, although I feel like it'll be a two-way battle between Kanye & Future for the next artist to reach 100 charting entries, with the latter getting the slight edge.

Kanye announced a new album called 'Yandhi' last September, but nothing seems to have developed from that since then. Future's album release schedule seems much more frequent & he's more likely to be called for features & have a bigger album on his own anyway.

Chris Brown is also popular among features, but I feel like he might go quiet for a little bit since 'Indigo' came out not too long ago & that was one of his highest charting BB200 entries to date.

avatar

Henri Laitila

Yeah unless Kanye releases an album later this year (Which by the looks of things would chart every Song from it), Future is most likely the next one.

While I am not the biggest fan of neither Kanye nor Chris, Future is the one I'm going to be really disappointed about when reaching this milestone :(

Also there are actually two points I would like to discuss:

One is actually most followed Instagram accounts. There are numerous charts which list the most followed Instagram accounts in the World, however I actually found a chart the previous week, which lists 25 most followed Finnish accounts! It was really helpful because it lists accounts by profession: most followed people overall, most followed singers, most followed artists, etc. I could share at least the overall list if you're interested :)

The other one is pretty random but Still one that interests me much: This year will mark the 80th anniversary of World War II beginning. As one who is very interested in history, I have lately watched numerous documents, played video games surrouding the time, et cetera.

However what really interests me is how Finland is portrayed in the Grand scheme of things. Obviously the central powers of both Allied and Axis powers are in the center pretty much everywhere, but how well is Finland's role portrayed in the English-speaking World for example? Because technically we did fight alongside the $, so I could see it being shed in the negative light as well.

Also, you know how you recommended 'Be Someone' to me a few weeks back?

Thank you very much for that! It's grown on me so much that it just entered the Top 10 of my personal chart.

At the rate it's going, I might end up liking it even more than 'Cola'! :D

Hi Piran, I was hoping I could get used to this would be having a full resurgence but I think this week it may have been re-issued as a new release again so it could finally climb in the top 40 but will see. Also I'm loving Freyas album and also Mabels too

avatar

Piran

0

Hey Rob! :)

I hope Mabel's album will have at least a Top 5 debut next week! There are really good potential pop smashes on 'High Expectations', but 'Not Sayin' would be my favourite at the moment (sounds like a song that could do well in Eurovision!).

I wonder if Freya can get another Top 40 hit from her debut album... probably 'Unconditional' would be the most likely to do it. I wouldn't be too surprised if 'Castles' goes on to be a Top 10 hit either.

avatar

Piran

I'd definitely like to see that Instagram list! I'm not too sure what to expect, but I have a feeling Sanni would be fairly high up there, at least among musicians.

That would be cool to hear too, since I never really knew Finland's placing in WWII. I was surprised to hear that they fought alongside Germany though & even more surprised that Russia were officially their enemies. It appears that Sweden were one of the few mutual countries.

Woah... the Top 2 are very close! I guess I'm not surprised that F1 has such a massive Instagram following, since we know the sport is so big in Finland.

By the way, unrelated to this particular post, but I noticed that you gave 'The Archer' an impressive 9.5/10 on the latest Hot 100 article!

I'm obviously thrilled by this since I love the song too, but with a rating that high, I'd like to know where it places among your favourite Taylor Swift songs of all-time?

avatar

Henri Laitila

1

I'm not sure how much you know of Kimi Räikkönen, but he's such a legend!

So Kimi's nickname is the "Iceman", which is very fitting and visible in his way of dealing with interviews: he always answers with short, monotonical sententes. That might not be that liked elsewhere, but being honest with you, very Finnish behaviour! :D

Kimi never had a social media account until 2017 when he got one. We were honestly so shocked of this! It was a good decision though because now his account is the most followed Finnish personal account!

The only big surprise to me on this whole list is Mika Salo at #14! Born in 1966, he's easily the oldest in this list. He drove in F1 from 1994-2002, and was never a frontline driver honestly, excluding his short stint as a replacement with the leading Ferrari in 1999. Mika's career wasn't bad by any means, but considering another Mika, Häkkinen, won TWO championships in 1998-1999... I could easily see Salo being sidelined!

Then again Salo has relevance as an F1 steward and is highly respected in the community, so I could see him getting some attention abroad.

avatar

Henri Laitila

1

"The Archer" is very special, because there's two Taylor Swift songs I would truly say to love: "All Too Well" and now this!

I would still say "All Too Well" with a full 10 is my favorite song of hers, but "The Archer" is most likely in second place! :)

avatar

Piran

0

That's cool, since I know a lot of critics compared 'The Archer' to 'All Too Well', which is a big compliment given how well received the latter was!

Too bad it's only a promotional single, since it's way better than 'Me!' & 'You Need To Calm Down'. Then again, she seems to improve with her singles as the album cycle goes on, just look at how well 'Delicate' did! :D

avatar

Piran

1

I knew Sanni would be here, haha! I remember you mentioned Cheek was one of the biggest solo artists in Finland ever, so it's not surprise to see him here too!

Lots of Sara's as well; I counted three here. ;)

Is Robin Packalen the same Robin who we compared to JB?

Also, you know we were also discussing F1 here, who was the Finnish driver that appears in the 'Frisbee' video? We've definitely discussed this before, but I've somehow forgot, haha.

avatar

Henri Laitila

1

Yeah Sara after another, right? And these aren't the only famous Sara's or Saara's: there's obviously Saara Aalto (148k followers) and the former Miss Finland, current TV host Sara Sieppi (161k followers), just to name a few! :O

Though after a quick investigation it does seem Sara Fabel's real first name is Sari! Then again I would count her as artistic names are created for a reason!

I'm very surprised to see SAARA "only" having around 300k followers. That does put her in Top 25 here, sure, but considering the fact her youtube channel is one of the few Finnish channels to have over a million subscribers, I expected more TBH :(

Robin Packalen is indeed that same person! I was a bit surprised to see the other teen star Isac Elliot ahead of him. However Isac has a decent fan base in Norway for example so I guess international fans rise his count.

Yeah, and you know? That F1 driver in the video is actually Mika Häkkinen, the two-time world champion! This other Mika has a good amount of 187k followers, but that is still almost half of what Salo has! :O

avatar

Piran

1

So since you posted this, I actually did the same but for British & Irish celebrities (as of 2018) & this is what we got...

#1: Emma Watson (actress) [43.92 million]
#2: David Beckham (footballer) [43.14 million]
#3: Cara Delevigne (model) [41.11 million]
#4: Gareth Bale (footballer) [32.91 million]
#5: Zayn Malik (singer) [27.3 million]
#6: Harry Styles (singer) [23.14 million]
#7: Niall Horan (singer) [20.45 million]
#8: Ellie Goulding (singer) [14.1 million]
#9: Rita Ora (singer) [13.21 million]
#10: Brooklyn Beckham [photographer] [10.98 million]

So a couple of interesting points here are that of half the list being singers, three of them were from 1D! Also, the Beckham's are the only family to have multiple members here, since Brooklyn is David's eldest son.

By the way, I don't know if you've seen my new personal chart yet, but I bet there'll be at least a couple of surprises there! ;)

Now continuing on Finland in WWII. As a history freak this might get spammed but I'm trying to keep this fairly basic :D

So it all tied down to the end of WWI. Russian Empire fell, and the Soviet Union emerged. The Grand Duchy of Finland, officially a part of the Russian Empire, saw its opportunity among the chaos, and declared independence on December 6, 2017, with support from Vladimir Lenin himself.

However that only created chaos. Finland in early 1918 was heavily divided into two camps: the first one being the senate of Finland and its supporters, officially called the "Whites", and the rebels who went against the senate, officially called the "Reds". These inner battles then started the Civil War of Finland, with the Whites gaining support from Imperial Germany, and the Reds having support from Soviet Union. While the war lasted only from January 2018 until May 2018 and ended in the Whites' victory, it was very very !

While it was never calm between the World Wars, Finland held on with a few political crisis but nothing too major.

However then came the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact in August 1938. In the pact the Baltic States, the Eastern Poland and Finland were "given" to the Soviets as a frontier. While the Baltic states voluntarily gave the Soviets access to military bases, Finland didn't surrender that easily. Despite numerous negotiations, the Winter War began in November 1939, when the Soviets shot the "Mainila Shots", a series of gunshots which Soviet soldiers themselves shot and then claimed that Finland had shot them, considering this as an act of war.

The war lasted from November 1939 until the Moscow peace treaty in March 1940, and was fought in Eastern Finland. Terms like "Sisu", an untranslatable term meaning the special Finnish willpower, and Molotov Cocktail were created. Among most interesting facts in the war were the extremely cold winter climates, huge losses of the Red Army, the Finnish fighting tactics and the "Spirit of Talvisota".

While it officially ended as a stalemate, Finland had to give 11% of its territories to the Soviets, including then-second-largest city Viipuri. Then again Finland did fight really well against an unbeatable Red Army. The Soviets most likely considered Finland as an easy target and that the victory would be easy!

I'll continue on the next comment.

I'm positively surprised to see Emma Watson at number-one! I did realize she would be high but definitely not that high! :O

Same! I believe David Beckham was #1 only like a few weeks before this list was updated. That doesn't surprise me too much at all really, given that they're "only" separated by just over 750k followers.
