This is the Feeder album you're talking about, right? I'm not saying it's the whole answer, but one of the marketing tactics Feeder use is that they release an album on a whole slew of formats. There was the standard CD, a deluxe 'book' CD, a Japanese import CD (with slightly different tracklisting), two vinyl editions (a standard and a picture disc), three cassettes (red, white and pink), and for a limited time, vinyl test pressings were available from their website. All these formats count as a individual sale. There are quite a few fans out there (such as myself) who bought NINE copies of the album on it's week of release, artificially bumping up the week-one sales numbers. Feeder also did a tour of HMV branches around the UK and did in-store signings. Basically, everything they did was geared up to maximise their sales in that initial week. It'll probably end up being one of their weakest-selling albums, but because they were able to condense most of their sales in that initial, up-front surge, most people who wanted the album bought it within the first seven days. Yes that's the one. Many more examples out there though.
I think it is generally sad when artists spend so much effort into an album and one week after release it's like nothing happened. Must be frustrating.

Music today is so polarized. When a new album is released all the act's fans buy it the first week. No one else is interested.
